Description

Day 1: Arrival in Kunming · Shilin Karst Wonders + Yuantong Ancient Temple + Green Lake Slow Life

Theme: Natural Geology Exploration + Central Yunnan Buddhist Culture + City Life Atmosphere

🕘 Morning: Shilin Scenic Area (Stone Forest) (Tickets included, approx. 3 hours)

  • Schedule: 7:30 Depart from hotel (Kunming downtown) → 9:00 Arrive at scenic area → 9:00-12:00 Sightseeing → 12:00 Gather at the entrance for return trip.
  • Attraction Details:
    • The Stone Forest was formed in the Permian period 2.7 billion years ago. It is the only karst landform in the world distributed in a subtropical plateau and is listed as a World Natural Heritage site by UNESCO. The area is divided into Greater Stone Forest, Lesser Stone Forest, and Naigu Stone Forest. We will arrange visits to the core areas: Greater and Lesser Stone Forests.
    • Greater Stone Forest: Known for its steepness. Iconic sights include “Sword Peak Pond” (crystal water nestled among stone peaks) and “A Narrow Escape” (a path so thin only one person can pass). You can climb the “Peak Viewing Pavilion” for a panoramic view.
    • Lesser Stone Forest: The terrain is gentle, most famous for the “Ashima” stone peak (the incarnation of a beautiful girl in the legends of the Yi Sani people). Surrounding it are various figurative stones like the “Three Treasures of Fortune” (Husband and Wife Stone, Mother and Son Traveling Together).
    • Practical Tips: Sightseeing shuttles are 25 RMB/person (at own expense); it is recommended to purchase them to save energy. Wear non-slip sports shoes as some steps are steep. Yi ethnic guides (optional, 50 RMB/group) can vividly tell the legend of Ashima.

🕘 Noon: Lunch · Yi Ethnic Flavors

  • Recommended Restaurant: Shilin Yi Family Local Cuisine (near the scenic area exit, 8 Shilin Avenue).
  • Specialties: Sour Soup Tilapia (using local sour papaya fermentation as the soup base, fresh and spicy), Rubing (Goat Cheese) Fried with Green Peppers (a cheese made from goat milk with a texture similar to Halloumi), Grey Tofu (fluffy tofu made from potato starch that absorbs flavors).
  • Average Cost: 60-80 RMB, including local seasonal vegetables.

🕘 Afternoon: Yuantong Temple (Free, approx. 1 hour)

  • Schedule: 14:00-15:00.
  • Attraction Details:
    • First built during the Nanzhao Kingdom period of the Tang Dynasty (around 8th century). The existing buildings are in Ming and Qing styles. It is the only temple in China that simultaneously enshrines Mahayana (Daxiongbao Hall), Theravada (Copper Buddha Hall), and Tibetan (Mani Wheel) Buddhism.
    • Architectural Features: Built along the slope of Luofeng Mountain. There is a Free Life Pond (full of koi fish) in front. The golden roof of the Theravada pagoda contrasts with the Han-style eaves, and Tibetan prayer flags flutter in the wind, creating a strong sense of religious fusion.
    • Notes: No outside incense is allowed (three sticks of incense are provided for free). Avoid taking photos directly of Buddha statues and keep your voice low.

🕘 Evening: Green Lake Park (Cuihu) (Free, approx. 1.5 hours)

  • Schedule: 15:30-17:00 (Extended to 18:00 from November to March to watch Red-billed Gulls).
  • Local Life Experience:
    • Located in Wuhua District, covering 21 hectares. Known as the “Jade of the City” due to its scenery of “ten acres of lotus fish world, half a city of willows swaying over terraces.”
    • Recommended Activities: Rent a bike (10 RMB/hour) to ride around the lake, or sit at tea stalls by “Ruan Embankment” or “Tang Embankment” (tea seat fee from 5 RMB) to watch citizens practicing Tai Chi or square dancing. In winter (November-March), red-billed gulls gather; you can bring bread to feed them (convenience feeding points are at the entrance).
    • Cultural Detail: The “Yunnan Liberation Memorial Hall” (Free, 9:00-17:00) inside the park is worth a visit to learn about the history of the peaceful liberation of Yunnan.

🕘 Night: Dinner · Yunnan Flavored Bistro

  • Recommended Restaurant: “Old Kunming Small Pot Rice Noodles” on the second floor of Zhuanxin Farmers Market (8 Zhuanxin Road, Wuhua District).
  • Specialties: Freshly cooked Small Pot Rice Noodles. The soup is simmered with bone marrow and Xuanwei ham, served with pickled vegetables, minced meat, and leeks. It’s recommended to add “toppings” (crispy pork or blood pudding).
  • Average Cost: 25-35 RMB, experience the daily life of Kunming locals.

Accommodation: Kunming City (Wuhua/Panlong District recommended, such as Green Lake Hotel or All Seasons Hotel, near Metro Line 2 for easy travel the next day).
