Description
Product Core Highlights
-
Photography Paradise: The red soil and changing crops form a patchwork of colors. Kunming’s official Red Land introduction describes the iron-rich soil and highlights several visiting seasons, including winter. Sunrise, sunset and mist depend on the date and weather; -
Local Experience: Immerse yourself in Yi and Han farming culture, participate in field work, visit old craftsmen, and unlock authentic rural life; -
Flexible Customization: Boutique small groups (within 6 people), dates/number of people can be negotiated, accompanied by English-Chinese bilingual guides + local drivers with 10 years of driving experience; -
Who This Trip Suits: Families, couples and photography enthusiasts who are comfortable with early starts and road transfers. Discuss children’s needs, mobility, walking surfaces and rest stops before booking; the sunrise itinerary is not automatically suitable for every traveler.
Day 1: Kunming → Dongchuan Red Land (Road Transfer | Overnight in Dongchuan District)
🕘Morning: Arrive in Kunming, Start the Journey
-
Arrival Methods: ✈️ Flight: Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG) pickup (Available 8:00-20:00; overtime requires an additional service fee); 🚄 Train: Kunming Station/Kunming South Station pickup (Free luggage storage provided, can assist with storage until the next day). Confirm storage location, opening hours and collection arrangements: the itinerary is away from Kunming overnight and returns on the evening of Day 2. The 8:00-20:00 airport pickup window is not a latest-arrival time for the full Day 1 sightseeing program; agree an arrival cutoff and revised plan before booking a late arrival. -
Free Activity Suggestions (If time permits): If the agreed departure time allows, transfer into central Kunming and then explore [Kunming Old Street] on foot. The airport, Kunming Station and Kunming South Station are different starting points; check the transfer time from your actual arrival point rather than using one 30-minute estimate. You can explore century-old arcade buildings, and taste “Posu Bao” (Recommended: “Guan Sheng Yuan,” avg. 15 RMB).
🕐 Noon: Drive to Dongchuan Red Land
-
12:00 Arrive at Dongchuan District, lunch at [Hongtu Renjia Farmhouse] (Dongchuan District Center, near the bus station). Must try: Dongchuan Lamb Hot Pot (120 RMB/pot, skin-on black goat meat + wild mushrooms), Roasted Small Potatoes (5 RMB/portion, sprinkled with local dried chili powder).
🕓Afternoon: Explore the Core Area of Red Land
-
13:30 Meet and depart, 1.5h drive to [Dongchuan Red Land Scenic Area] (Entrance fee included, sightseeing bus 20 RMB/person optional). -
Tour Route (after the transfer; viewpoint order depends on available daylight): -
Yuepu Ao (Music Score Hollow) (first planned stop): Named for its terrain textures resembling a musical staff. The soil shows varying shades of reddish-brown. Low-angle shots are recommended for capturing linear patterns (suggest wearing solid-colored clothing to avoid distracting from the scene); -
107 Junction (next planned stop): A spot to overlook the “Earth’s Fingerprint.” You can see the Damakan mountain peaks in the distance. Light and shadows change rapidly with the clouds; a tripod is recommended; -
Hongtu Daguan (Red Land Grand View) (if daylight allows before the sunset transfer): A viewing platform combining man-made and natural landscapes, perfect for photographing panoramic views of layered terraces blending with the red soil.
-
🕓Evening: Luoxiagou Sunset · Photography Highlight Moment
-
Head to [Luoxiagou] before the date-specific sunset. Agree the viewpoint departure time with the guide using the actual driving route and time to set up your camera; shorten earlier stops if necessary. When conditions allow, low sunlight brings out the red land, ridges and cottages. This is the golden hour for shooting “Earth Oil Paintings” (GND filters are suggested to balance the light ratio). -
After photography, return to your confirmed Dongchuan hotel (Recommended: [Hongtu Impression Guesthouse], standard rooms from 260 RMB/night. The owner is a local photography enthusiast and can lend camera accessories).

Day 2: Dongchuan Red Land · Sunrise and Photography, then Return to Kunming
🕘Early Morning: Damakan Sunrise · Chasing the First Ray of Light
-
Arrange departure from the confirmed hotel to reach [Damakan] before the date-specific sunrise, allowing for the actual drive, parking and camera setup. Bring warm layers for the early start and check the forecast; do not use one fixed departure time for every season. -
Sunrise Photography: When weather permits, watch for morning mist and sunlight over the undulating red land (suggest using a telephoto lens to capture local light details and avoid wide-angle overexposure).
🕘Morning: Qicai Po (Seven-Color Slope) · Jinxiu Yuan (Embroidery Garden) · Color Carnival
-
After sunrise photography, head to [Qicai Po] (confirm the transfer time with the guide): Rich in minerals, the soil presents mottled colors of red, yellow, and purple, suitable for low-angle panoramic stitching; -
Next, visit [Jinxiu Yuan] (confirm the transfer time with the guide): An open high slope where you can photograph “color block puzzle” style terraces, paired with the smoke from distant village chimneys, blending life and beauty.
🕐Noon: Local Life Experience · Farmhouse Feast
-
12:00 Head to [Lao Le’s Courtyard] (Farmhouse next to Yuepu Ao, avg. 40 RMB). The hostess will serve freshly steamed Honey Buckwheat Cakes (15 RMB/portion) and Cold Shuhua (local wild vegetable, 10 RMB/portion). You can help prep vegetables and listen to her stories about “farming three seasons a year on the red land.”
🕓Afternoon: Free Creation · Documentary Photography
-
13:30-17:00 Free Activity (Options): -
Documenting Farmers’ Work: During the wheat harvest in May-June or buckwheat sowing in September-November, follow villagers into the fields to photograph scenes of harvesting or sowing (obtain the farmers’ permission before entering fields or photographing people; gifts do not replace consent); -
Visiting Old Craftsmen: Head to [Luoxiagou Village] (20 minutes drive) to find 82-year-old Grandpa Zhang (Yi ethnicity, skilled in weaving bamboo baskets). Watch him hand-weave farm tools and hear about the “Yi New Year on the Red Land” (local dates and customs must be confirmed with the hosts; Yi New Year is not held on one uniform date across all communities).
-
🕓Evening: Return to Kunming
-
17:30 is the proposed meeting time for the return to Kunming, not a guarantee of a 19:30 arrival. Confirm the actual hotel/airport destination, road conditions and expected arrival with the operator. Do not book a same-evening onward flight solely on the former two-hour estimate; allow for luggage collection and airline check-in deadlines. The guide will drop you at your hotel/airport (Can assist in booking Kunming hotels, e.g., [Green Lake Hotel], standard rooms from 450 RMB/night, near Green Lake Park).

Day 3: Kunming · End of Trip (or Extension)
🕘Morning: Flexible Arrangement (Depending on Return Time)
-
If departing in the morning: Prioritize checkout, luggage and the transfer to your actual station or airport. Only visit [Zhuanxin Farmers’ Market] if the hotel location and departure deadline leave enough time (Kunming old town, enjoy snacks for around 30 RMB: Xidoufen with Fried Dough 5 RMB, Lunan Rubing 15 RMB/piece); -
If extending the trip: Choose a [Shilin (Stone Forest) One-Day Tour] (1.5h drive from Kunming, ticket 130 RMB/person, see World Natural Heritage Karst landforms) or [Dounan Flower Market] (a major flower trading market with daytime shopping and evening trading; do not treat 4:00 AM wholesale activity as a universal visitor opening time. Check the current hours for the hall you want to visit). If you are considering a longer trip rather than a three-day return, compare Days 3-4 of the 10-day Yunnan loop with Dongchuan sunset and sunrise stops. That is a separate product with a longer route, not an included extension of this booking.
🕐Noon: Optional Farewell Lunch (if your departure permits)
-
Recommended: [Jian Xin Yuan Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles] (Kunming Station Branch), try the “Zhuangyuan Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles” (68 RMB/set, includes 10+ side dishes, broth simmered for 8 hours with chicken and bone).
