Description

Itinerary Overview

This 5-day itinerary covers Kunming’s World Heritage sites, Xishuangbanna’s tropical rainforests, Dai culture, and night market vibes. It combines guided sightseeing with free activities and local food suggestions. The timings below are a planning outline, not a confirmed operating schedule: several travel windows and ticket, transport and activity inclusions require written clarification before booking.

Day 1: Arrival in Kunming · First Encounter with the Spring City

Transportation:
  • Flight: Pickup from Kunming Changshui International Airport (KMG). Confirm the meeting point and the actual pickup sign with the guide before arrival. Luggage assistance and a transfer to the city hotel are listed; the former 40-minute estimate depends on the contracted hotel and traffic.
  • Train: Pickup from Kunming Station (approx. 20 minutes to downtown) or Kunming South Station (approx. 50 minutes to downtown).
🕘Morning/Noon:
Meals at your own expense. Recommended “Kunming Breakfast” experience: Visit Zhuanxin Farmers’ Market (Zhuanxin Road, Wuhua District, 6:00-20:00), a “Living Museum” of local daily life. Must-tries:
  • Xidoufen with Youtiao (previously listed at 10 RMB/set): A thick savory porridge served with crispy fried dough sticks. Ask the stall about ingredients and allergens; the previous description conflated soy milk and pea porridge;
  • Poshu Bao (3 RMB/piece): Layered steamed buns as delicate as petals, available in sweet or savory;
  • Roasted Tofu (5 RMB/10 pieces): Baojiang tofu served with mint and chili powder, crispy outside and tender inside.
🕐Afternoon:
Free activity (14:00-18:00): Recommended visit to Green Lake Park (Cuihu) (South Cuihu Road, Wuhua District, Free), Kunming’s “Urban Green Lung.” In winter (Nov – March), Black-headed Gulls hover; watch them without chasing or handling them, and follow the park’s current wildlife-feeding instructions rather than assuming ordinary bread is suitable. The nearby “Military Academy of the Ground Forces” (Free, 9:00-17:00) features yellow French-style architecture perfect for photography.
Evening:
  • Recommended: Jian Xin Yuan Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles (Baoshan Street, Wuhua District, approx. 40 RMB/person). A century-old shop; the “Zhuangyuan Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles” is a must. Ask the restaurant to ensure meat and eggs are thoroughly cooked before eating; hot broth alone is not proof that every ingredient has cooked through. Enjoy the noodles once staff confirm they are ready.
Accommodation: Hotel in Kunming city (subject to order, recommended near Green Lake/Jinbi Road for easy travel the next day).

Day 2: Kunming → Xishuangbanna · Stone Forest Wonders & Rainforest Prelude

🕘Morning (departure and sightseeing window to confirm):
  • Breakfast included. Depart from hotel for a 78 km drive (approx. 1.5 hours) to Yunnan Stone Forest (Ticket 130 RMB including shuttle; booking via WeChat is advised).
  • Attraction Details: A karst landscape whose geological evolution spans about 270 million years, a World Natural Heritage site and Global Geopark. Recommended route:
    • Major Stone Forest: Take the shuttle to the entrance. Walk to see “Sword Peak Pond,” “A Narrow Escape” (a gap only wide enough to squeeze through sideways) before continuing to the Minor Stone Forest for Ashima.
    • Minor Stone Forest: Walk or take the shuttle to see the “Lotus Pond” and the iconic “Ashima” rock.
  • Allow roughly 3.5 hours for the proposed visit, plus the drive, entry and breaks; this did not fit the former 7:30-12:00 window. Agree the day’s timing around the booked train. Wear non-slip shoes and bring sun protection; shade varies along the route.
🕐Noon (12:30-13:30):
  • The lunch location must be confirmed before the station transfer: the restaurant example below is in Shilin County, not central Kunming. The former instruction to return to Kunming for this meal was inconsistent with that address. Previously suggested: Yi Family Flavor Garden (Shilin Avenue, Shilin County, approx. 60 RMB/person). Specialties: Sour Soup Tilapia (38 RMB/portion, using local sour papaya broth), Roasted Suckling Pig (58 RMB/portion).
🕓Afternoon (train and station transfer to confirm):
  • Day 2 lists a rail journey from Kunming South to Xishuangbanna. Confirm the booked train, fare, station transfer and sufficient time for station entry and boarding through the operator and China Railway 12306 for your travel date; do not rely on the former D8965/15:00-18:30/145 RMB example. Rail-ticket inclusion is unresolved because the original summary promised a bus throughout.
  • Arrive at Xishuangbanna Station. Guide pickup and 30-minute drive to Jinghong city hotel.
🕓Evening (after arrival and check-in):
  • Free activity recommended: Starlight Night Market (Gaozhuang Xishuangjing, near the Shwedagon Pagoda, 18:00-23:30). A popular evening market; its claimed regional size ranking is not established here. Must-visits:
    • Handicrafts: Dai silver jewelry (50-200 RMB), brocade scarves (80 RMB);
    • Snacks: Chui Chicken Feet (25 RMB, spicy and sour), Paoluda (15 RMB, coconut milk with dry bread and sago);
    • Photo Spot: Shwedagon Pagoda light show (starts at 20:00, Free).
  • The Riverside Night Market on the opposite bank (19:00-23:30) is more local. Recommended: “Wantai Laos Ice Coffee” (approx. 25 RMB) and Roasted Pineapple Rice (35 RMB).

Day 3: Xishuangbanna · Botanical Kingdom & Dai Royal Heritage

🕘Morning (garden visit; timing to confirm):
  • Breakfast included. Drive 62 km (approx. 1 hour) to Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden, Chinese Academy of Sciences (Ticket 80 RMB including shuttle; booking via official website advised).
  • Attraction Details: One of China’s largest botanical gardens, founded in 1959, covering about 11.25 sq km and collecting over 13,000 living plant species according to the garden. Focus on the West Area:
    • Shade Plant Garden: View labeled specimens such as the upas tree and epiphytic orchids from the paths. Do not touch plant sap or taste plants; keep children supervised;
    • Aquatic Plant Garden: View the giant water lilies from the designated path when in season. The former 20 kg child-load claim is not a safety permission: do not put a child on a leaf yourself or enter the pond. Any organized demonstration requires the garden’s current authorization and staff supervision;
    • Palm Garden: Majestic King Palms and Bottle Palms;
    • Banyan Garden: Strangler Figs (aerial roots wrapping around host trees).
  • The proposed four-hour garden visit plus the listed one-hour drive exceeds the former 8:30-13:00 window. Confirm an earlier start or a revised visit length with the operator. The previously suggested “Green Stone Forest Restaurant” (approx. 50 RMB) needs a location check against the West Area route; it is not confirmation of the included lunch venue.
🕐Noon (13:00-14:00):
  • Lunch included; simple meal in the garden or nearby.
🕐Afternoon (after the return transfer to Jinghong):
  • Head to Manting Park (Ticket 40 RMB). A former Dai royal garden with landscaped grounds and stupas. The exact 1325 founding date previously stated has not been verified. Must-sees:
    • Octagonal Pavilion: A masterpiece of Dai architecture with colorful glazed tiles and carved windows;
    • White pagoda in Manting Park: Travel references distinguish the park’s replica from the historic Manfeilong pagoda outside the city. This Manting visit should not be read as a transfer to the original monument. The former 1570 date is withdrawn pending an authoritative heritage reference.
  • Tour approx. 2.5 hours. You can rent Dai ethnic costumes for photos (50 RMB/set including styling).
🕓Late afternoon (temple access to confirm):
  • Walk to Zongfo Temple (Free, connected to Manting Park), Xishuangbanna’s highest-ranking Buddhist temple. Note: Dress modestly with shoulders and knees covered and remove shoes where temple staff or signs require. Confirm visitor hours and the route from the park in advance; do not assume evening access or sarong rentals are available.
🕓Night (19:30-21:00):
  • Optional: Lancang-Mekong River Night Show (from 280 RMB, includes buffet + bonfire party). Held at Manting Park, featuring ethnic dances of six countries and water lantern blessings. Join the “Gaguang Dance” (Dai collective dance).

Day 4: Xishuangbanna · Elephant Habitat Viewing & Ancient Village Life

🕘Morning (departure and visit length to confirm):
  • Breakfast included. Drive 31 km (approx. 40 minutes) to Wild Elephant Valley (Ticket 60 RMB; Package with one-way cable car = 100 RMB recommended).
  • Attraction Details: A scenic area associated with Asian elephant habitat; wild sightings are not guaranteed. Stay on open visitor routes and follow staff instructions; do not approach, feed or pursue wild elephants. Recommended experiences:
    • Rainforest Theater: Elephant performances were listed here, but the timetable, current program and participation are not confirmed. Such performances are not wild-elephant observation; ask for details and decide separately whether to attend;
    • Elevated Observation Boardwalk: Use only open sections during the confirmed morning visit. The former dawn/evening recommendation conflicted with this day’s departure and village itinerary. Do not enter before opening or stay after closing in pursuit of a sighting;
    • Asian Elephant Museum (Free): See elephant fossils and learn about conservation (approx. 1 hour).
  • A four-hour visit plus the listed 40-minute drive does not fit the former 8:00-12:30 window even before entry. Confirm a feasible start, visit length and lunch time. The “Rainforest Restaurant” was suggested at about 70 RMB/person; confirm whether this is the included meal venue before paying separately. Try the “Elephant Meal”: rice wrapped in banana leaves with a fruit platter.
🕐Noon (12:30-13:30):
  • Lunch included; simple meal in the area.
🕓Afternoon (after lunch and the village transfer):
  • Head to Manzhang Village (previously estimated as a 40-minute drive from Wild Elephant Valley). The former 14:00 start allowed only 30 minutes after lunch; confirm the actual arrival time. The village offers a chance to learn about Dai culture; its exact age is not established here.
  • Recommended Activities:
    • Village Tour: See traditional bamboo stilt houses, rice fields, and the “Manzhang Cultural Exhibition Hall” (Free);
    • Intangible Heritage: Paper making (30 RMB/person using tree bark), slow-wheel pottery (50 RMB/person), and traditional weaving (40 RMB/person);
    • Photos: Wear Dai costumes in the rice fields or under ancient trees (rent for 20 RMB/set from villagers).
  • Recommended dinner at a Manzhang Farmhouse (approx. 60 RMB/person). Must-try: Dai Hand Pilaf (served with sour bamboo fish, grilled pork belly, and ghost chicken).
🕓Night:
  • Free activity. Relax or visit Gaozhuang Xishuangjing (18:00-22:00) to see the Lancang River. Recommended: “Mekong River Six-Country Floating Market” (Boat ride 50 RMB/person, buy Thai snacks and Vietnamese coffee).

Day 5: Farewell to Banna · Departure or Extension

🕘Morning:
Breakfast included. Drop-off service based on schedule:
  • Xishuangbanna Gasa International Airport (5 km from city, 20 mins drive): Arrive 2 hours early;
  • Xishuangbanna Station (8 km from city, 30 mins drive): Arrive 1 hour early.
Extensions (Optional):
If extending your stay, we can arrange:
  • Dali (an optional extension to Dali Ancient City and the Erhai Ecological Corridor; check date-specific train services, transfers and total travel time before booking rather than using the former two-hour claim);
  • Lijiang (an optional extension to Shuhe Ancient Town and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain; confirm the route, any rail connection and total journey time rather than using the former three-hour claim).
