Description
Day 1: Journey Through the Mist of History, Exploring the “Key to the Northern Gate”
Gubeikou Great Wall – Restricted Area Bypass – Jinshanling Great Wall (West Section)
🕒 Itinerary (Times are for reference only)
-
08:30 – 09:00 | Guide Meet-up: Your guide will meet you in the hotel lobby. It is recommended to bring high-energy snacks (chocolate, energy bars) and at least 2L of drinking water.
-
09:00 – 11:30 | Gubeikou Challenge: Enter from Gubeikou. Built during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty, this is a true “Wild Great Wall.” You will hike toward the 24-Eye Tower.
-
Scenic Highlight: The walls here are mostly ruins, offering a clear view of the original traces left by the famous Ming general Qi Jiguang during the reinforcement of the Great Wall.
-
-
11:30 – 13:00 | Picnic & Bypass: Since the area behind the 24-Eye Tower is a restricted military zone, we will descend along a side path to bypass it, crossing through forest trails used by local villagers.
-
Cultural Detail: You will pass by local farmlands. If it is autumn, you can see branches heavy with hawthorn or persimmons, capturing the most authentic rural atmosphere of the Beijing suburbs.
-
-
13:00 – 15:30 | Entering Jinshanling: Re-ascend the Jinshanling Great Wall. This section is famous for its “Barrier Walls” (small transverse walls on top of the main wall), which served as excellent defensive cover.
-
15:30 – 16:30 | Peak Moment: Reach the West 5-Eye Tower. This is the prime photography spot for the entire Great Wall, where you can capture a stunning panorama of the wall winding like a giant dragon through the mountains.
-
16:30 – 17:30 | Descent & Rest: Descend from Zhuanduokou and return to the hotel to rest.
🍴 Dining Recommendations (Self-pay)
-
Dinner Suggestion: There are many “Farmhouse Stays” at the foot of Jinshanling. We recommend trying Firewood-Stoved Menzi or Luanping Reservoir Fish.
-
Reference Price: Approx. 60 – 100 RMB per person.

Day 2: Strolling Through the Sky Gallery, Capturing Original Ming Dynasty Vistas
Jinshanling Great Wall (East Section) – Simatai Great Wall (West Section)
🕒 Itinerary (Times are for reference only)
-
08:00 – 08:30 | Breakfast: Enjoy an included nutritious breakfast at the hotel to recharge.
-
09:00 – 11:00 | Jinshanling Eastbound: Start again from Zhuanduokou and head east. Today’s route features exceptionally ornate architecture.
-
Key Landmarks: General Tower (a complex command center) and Big Jinshan Tower (a double-layered defense tower, excellent for capturing reflections).
-
Architectural Features: Look for the inscriptions on the bricks, such as “Made by the Ministry of War in the 6th year of Wanli.” These are known as “Character Bricks,” historical witnesses to the Ming Dynasty Great Wall’s quality accountability system.
-
-
11:00 – 12:30 | Crossing the Boundary: Continue to the junction with the Simatai Great Wall.
-
Site Intro: Simatai was praised by Great Wall expert Luo Zhewen as the “best of China’s Great Wall.” It is the only ancient architectural site that retains its original Ming Dynasty appearance.
-
-
12:30 – 13:30 | Final Sprint: Arrive at the East 5-Eye Tower. The view here is expansive, overlooking Gubei Water Town at the foot of the mountain.
-
13:30 – 14:00 | Journey Complete: Descend from Simatai. Your guide will assist with your return to downtown Beijing or arrange subsequent travel plans.
