Yunnan Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles Experience: Recommended: “Jian Xin Yuan” (Baoshan Street branch, near Green Lake). A century-old brand; the “Zhuangyuan Crossing-the-Bridge Noodles” is a must-try (includes 10+ side dishes with boiling broth, approx. 45 RMB/person). -

-
It is recommended to stay in hotels near Green Lake/Nanping Street (e.g., XX Chain Hotel) for convenient travel the next day.

Day 2: Kunming · Karst Wonders and Buddhist Zen
🕘Morning: Stone Forest Scenic Area (07:30-12:30)
-
Itinerary: Depart from hotel (approx. 1.5 hours drive, 78 km) → Tour Stone Forest (Tickets 130 RMB included, sightseeing shuttle 25 RMB/person at own expense). -
In-depth Experience: -
History: UNESCO describes the Stone Forest as a geological wonder formed over 270 million years ago, once covered by an ancient sea. Its karst pillars form part of a UNESCO World Heritage site and a UNESCO Global Geopark. The sightseeing route includes the Major and Minor Stone Forest areas and Jianfeng Pool. -
Route: Explore the Major and Minor Stone Forest areas, allowing for shuttle transfers, stone paths and rest stops. Ask the guide to explain the Sani legend of Ashima and identify the relevant formations on the current visitor map rather than follow the earlier fixed walking times. -
Tips: Check the local forecast and bring layers for rain, wind and cooler conditions rather than relying on a fixed temperature difference from downtown; wear comfortable walking shoes for the stone paths.
-
🕐Noon: Lunch (12:30-13:30)
-
Lunch near the scenic area, then allow a separate road transfer back to Kunming before the temple visit. Recommended: “Stone Forest Rubing Feast” (Local farmhouse near the scenic area. Must try: Sautéed Rubing with Meat, Wild Mushroom Soup; approx. 50 RMB/person).
🕐Afternoon: Yuantong Temple (after the return transfer, if opening hours permit)
-
Attraction Details: Originally built during the Tang Dynasty (Nanzhao Kingdom), with over 1200 years of history. The visit introduces Han Chinese, Theravada and Tibetan Buddhist traditions. Tickets 5 RMB. -
Architectural Highlights: Built into the hillside, the Mahavira Hall is typical Han style, while the Southern Buddhist pagoda is hidden in the backyard, and Tibetan prayer wheels are in the side halls. Visit them in sequence. -
Cultural Experience: This is an afternoon visit, not a morning-chanting appointment. Observe only activities open to visitors, follow temple instructions and remain quiet.
🕓Evening: Green Lake Park + Free Activities (as time permits after the temple)
-
Walk 700 meters to Green Lake Park (Free). Stroll around the lake and observe “Dajiao” (Yi ethnic dance, usually starts after 19:00 in the plaza; watch or join in). -
Dinner Recommendation: “Zhuanxin Farmers’ Market” (Directly accessible via Metro Line 5). A hidden food street for locals: -
Douhua Noodles (“Duanshi Xiaoguo” branch, approx. 15 RMB/person, aromatic chili oil); -
Roasted Erkuai (“Wangji Erkuai,” wrapped with fried dough and peanut sauce, approx. 8 RMB/person).
-

Day 3: Kunming → Shangri-La · Tibetan Culture in Yunnan
🕘Morning: Train to Shangri-La (use the booked service time)
-
Transportation: The guide will take you to the departure station shown on your booked Kunming-Shangri-La ticket. Confirm the service number, station, departure and arrival times, and second-class seat reservation through 12306 and your operator before travel. Rail travel is listed as included, but the return-ticket scope conflicts with the departure exclusions and needs written confirmation. -
Travel Tips: Shangri-La is at an altitude of 3459 meters. Plan a low-effort arrival, sun protection and a pre-travel medical discussion if rapid ascent or your health history is a concern. Small handheld oxygen cans can provide only brief relief; they are not a substitute for acclimatization or medical care. Do not continue higher with altitude symptoms. If symptoms worsen at rest, descend and seek medical care; confusion, loss of coordination or breathlessness at rest require urgent help. See CDC advice on high-altitude travel.
🕘Noon: Lunch (12:30-13:30)
-
After the actual train arrival and transfer, the guide can help arrange a “Tibetan light meal” (Butter Tea, Yak meat buns and Tsampa are suggested; the earlier reference budget is about 40 RMB/person). Day 3 lunch is not listed among included meals; confirm the arrangement and payment before ordering.
🕐Afternoon: Check-in + Rest (14:00-16:00)
-
Check into a Shangri-La city hotel (e.g., XX Tibetan Hotel, near Dukezong Ancient Town, rooms equipped with oxygen machines).
🕓Evening: Dukezong Ancient Town (16:00-19:00)
-
Attraction Details: The 1300-year-old “Moonlight City” features well-preserved Tibetan dwellings (wood-earth structures with painted windows) and was a vital stop on the Tea Horse Road. Free entry. -
Optional Low-Effort Activities: -
Guishan Park (10-minute walk): View the large prayer wheel; avoid strenuous climbing or pushing it during your initial adjustment to altitude. Follow local access instructions and, if participating later, the clockwise custom; -
Town Stroll: Visit the “Red Army Long March Museum” (Free, learn about the 1936 history) and the “Da Gui Shan” viewing platform (Best light for panoramic views after 17:00).
-
🕓Night: Tibetan Nightlife (19:30-21:00)
-
Guozhuang Dance at Sifang Square: If a public dance gathering is taking place, watch quietly rather than plan strenuous dancing on arrival. Do not treat a nightly performance or a 21:00 finish as guaranteed; -
Ancient Town Night View: Lighting and visibility vary with the season and local arrangements. Recommend walking from Moonlight Square to Jinlong Street to see the blend of Tibetan stone towers and modern lights.

Day 4: Shangri-La · Double Shock of Faith and Nature
🕘Morning: Songzanlin Monastery (08:30-12:00)
-
Attraction Details: The largest Tibetan Buddhist monastery in Yunnan (Built in 1679, chosen by the 5th Dalai Lama), known as the “Little Potala Palace.” Tickets 55 RMB (Included in tour fee). -
In-depth Experience: -
Architecture: Five-story Tibetan towers; the main “Zacang Hall” is 30 meters high. The red, white, and black exterior walls symbolize Manjusri, Avalokiteshvara, and Vajrapani Bodhisattvas; -
Cultural Experience: Follow the guide and the monastery’s current visitor rules; religious activities are not a guaranteed 10:00-11:00 performance. Do not photograph inside halls. View Lamuyangcuo Lake from permitted areas as your energy allows; skip strenuous climbs during initial altitude adjustment.
-
-
Tips: No shouting, do not step on thresholds, remove hats. Altitude 3700 meters; avoid strenuous exercise.
🕘Noon: Lunch (12:00-13:00)
-
“Tibetan Family Restaurant” near the monastery (approx. 50 RMB/person). Recommend the Yak meat “Gaibei” (Yak meat + milk curd + Tsampa cake, served with Butter Tea).
🕐Afternoon: Pudacuo National Park (fit the route to current admission and last-shuttle times)
-
Attraction Details: A landscape of alpine lakes, meadows and forests. Yunnan’s forestry authority describes the park established in June 2007 as the first national-park entity in mainland China and a later national-park-system pilot; this is distinct from the current national designation system. Admission and the eco-bus are listed as included here, but the earlier 100 + 80 RMB reference does not match the park operator’s displayed tariff. Confirm the exact ticket package and visit-date arrangements with the operator before booking. -
Core Experience: -
Shudu Lake: choose a currently open boardwalk section that fits your stamina and the last shuttle. Remain on permitted paths and rest at designated areas; wildlife sightings are not guaranteed; -
Bita Lake: check which sections and transport are open on your date; the park operator notes that some areas are not open. Do not assume a direct eco-bus or a guaranteed “Drunken Fish” sighting. The earlier pollen-anesthesia explanation is not established here; do not feed fish, throw plants into the lake or leave permitted paths.
-
🕓Evening: Tibetan Family Visit (after the park exit and road transfer)
-
Location: Tibetan village by Napahai. Confirm the actual host address, pickup point and road-transfer time; park exit and shuttle time must be allowed before the family visit. -
Experience: -
Drink Butter Tea (The host demonstrates the making process, guests can participate; Free); -
Taste Tsampa Cakes and Milk Curd (Served with honey, approx. 20 RMB/person); -
Listen to old artisans talk about “Tibetan New Year” customs (Annual horse racing and Guozhuang dancing).
-
🕓Night: Free Activity Recommendation
-
Choose a quiet evening and a non-alcoholic drink, or return to the hotel to rest. Avoid alcohol for at least the first 48 hours at altitude. If a venue offers live Dramyin music, confirm its program rather than assume a resident singer is performing nightly.

Day 5: Farewell to Shangri-La · Departure or Extended Journey
🕘Morning: Drop-off Service (time agreed for your ticket)
-
The guide will drop you at Shangri-La Station/Diqing Airport (DIG): -
Rail departure: check the actual Shangri-La-Kunming service and ticket on 12306, then allow for hotel transfer, security and boarding. Confirm whether your return ticket is included before purchasing a separate one; -
Flight departure: check the operating airline, route and date-specific schedule directly with the airline. Use its check-in and baggage deadlines to set the airport transfer; the earlier flight number and times are not a booking basis.
-
Extension Journey Recommendations (Optional)
-
If extending your stay, you can head to: -
More Time in Pudacuo (an optional extra day on officially open visitor routes only; do not enter unopened or restricted areas, even with a guide); -
Dali (check the date-specific rail service and station transfers before planning Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple and cycling by Erhai Lake; these are optional onward ideas, not activities guaranteed on the departure morning); -
Lijiang (compare available rail and road transfers on your date before planning Shuhe Ancient Town and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain; allow additional time and altitude preparation for the mountain).
