Day 2: Kunming · Karst Wonder and Zen-like Slow Life

Itinerary Overview: Stone Forest Scenic Area (9:00-13:00) → Yuantong Temple (15:00-16:30) → Green Lake Park (17:00-18:30) → Yunnan Crossing-the-Bridge Rice Noodles Dinner

🕘Morning: Stone Forest Scenic Area (World Natural Heritage)

  • History and Characteristics: Shaped through approximately 270 million years of geological evolution, it is a subtropical Karst landform. It was listed as one of China’s first National Scenic Spots in 1982 and a World Natural Heritage site in 2007.
  • Tour Route (Approx. 3 hours):
    • Take the sightseeing bus (included in ticket, 25 RMB/person) to the Greater Stone Forest, visit “Sword Peak Pond”;
    • Continue to the Lesser Stone Forest to see “Ashima Rock”, associated with the Yi legend of Ashima, and follow the signed paths among the stone formations.
  • Tips: No dining inside the scenic area, bring your own snacks; wear anti-slip shoes (stone steps can be steep).

🕐Afternoon: Yuantong Temple (Millennium Ancient Temple)

  • History and Architecture: Originally built during the Nanzhao Kingdom of the Tang Dynasty (approx. 8th century) and rebuilt during the Hongwu era of the Ming Dynasty (1382). It is the only temple in China where Han, Southern (Theravada), and Tibetan Buddhism coexist.
  • Experience Highlights:
    • View the “Water Courtyard” layout (surrounded by water diverted from the Panlong River, rare in China);
    • Pay respects at the Mahavira Hall (Han Buddhism) and Copper Buddha Hall (Southern Buddhism);
    • The “Dragon Curse Platform” in the backyard offers a panoramic view of the temple (Free).
  • Opening Hours: 8:00-18:00, Ticket 5 RMB/person.

🕘Evening: Green Lake Park · Local Life

  • Enter the park after 17:00 to participate in citizen activities:
    • Mon/Wed/Fri nights 19:00-20:30, “Kunming Elderly Art Troupe” performs Lantern Opera by the lake (free to watch);
    • Rent a bicycle (20 RMB/hour) to ride around the lake and feel the greenery of the “Spring City”.

Day 3: Kunming → Dali · First Experience of Wind, Flowers, Snow, and Moon

Itinerary Overview: High-speed train to Dali (8:00-10:00) → Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple (12:30-14:30) → Erhai Lake Cycling (15:30-17:30) → Free time in Dali Ancient City (19:00-21:00)

🕗Morning: Transportation and Three Pagodas

  • High-speed Train Info: Kunming Station/South Station → Dali Station, frequent departures daily 7:00-20:00 (Recommended G2831, 8:30-10:30, Second Class 145 RMB). After meeting the guide at the station, drive to Chongsheng Temple (20 minutes).
  • Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple (Ticket 75 RMB/person, including electric cart):
    • History: Built during the late Nanzhao Kingdom (approx. 9th century). The main “Qianxun Pagoda” is 69.13 meters high (Tang Dynasty style brick pagoda), serving as the symbol of “Wind, Flowers, Snow, and Moon” along with Cangshan Snow and Erhai Moon.
    • Must-see Details:
      • Reflection Pond (best light before 10 AM or after 4 PM to capture double pagoda reflections);
      • “Rain Copper Guanyin Statue” inside the temple (12.6 meters high, cast during the Nanzhao Kingdom).
    • Cultural Extension: “Hongsheng Temple Pagoda” behind the temple is a building from the Dali Kingdom period (Free external view).

🕑Afternoon: Erhai Lake · Ecological Corridor Cycling

  • Route Recommendation: Caicun Pier → Longkan Pier: a short lakeside ride, with the actual distance depending on the rental and return points. Use the Erhai corridor entrance and bicycle-return guide to plan the return point and a driver meeting point outside the corridor.
  • Experience Details:
    • Choose a bicycle permitted on the intended corridor section, and confirm the rental fee, return point and return deadline before paying. Do not assume a scooter rented outside the corridor can enter, or that it is approved for two riders;
    • Stay on the agreed Caicun–Longkan section, with time for lakeside views and Bai-style village architecture (blue tiles, white walls and screen walls);
    • The well-known S-bend is a separate route choice, not an assumed stop on this short ride; discuss any extension and the vehicle-return plan before setting out.

🕖Evening: Dali Ancient City · Free Wander

  • Opening Hours: All day (Core area lights up after 18:00).
  • Recommended Route:
    • 19:00-20:00 Renmin Road: Browse handmade shops (e.g., “Lanxu Tie-dye”), sit in a cafe (“Corner Building”, approx. 30 RMB for hand-drip coffee);
    • 20:00-21:00 Foreigner Street (Yangren Jie): Watch street performers (guitar/hand drum), taste “Roasted Rushan Shaqima” (15 RMB/piece).

  • Dinner: Arranged at “Revisit Cold Chicken Rice Noodles” (Ancient City Renmin Road branch), cold chicken rice noodles (25 RMB) + roasted Erkuai (5 RMB), average 30 RMB/person.

Day 4: Dali → Shangri-La · Bai Culture and Highland Exploration

Itinerary Overview: Xizhou Ancient Town (9:30-12:00) → Zhoucheng Village Tie-dye Experience (14:00-16:00) → Drive to Shangri-La (16:30-20:30)

🕖Morning: Xizhou Ancient Town · A Blueprint of Bai Life

  • Historical Background: The site of the Nanzhao Kingdom’s “Dali City,” inhabited by the Bai people for a millennium, preserving a complete cluster of “Three Rooms and a Screen Wall” dwellings.
  • Core Experience:
    • Morning Market (7:00-10:00): With the scheduled 9:30 arrival, the market visit is near the end of the listed 7:00–10:00 window; discuss an earlier departure if the market is a priority. Look for “Xizhou Baba” (sweet rose/savory ham, 5 RMB/piece), “Rushan Shaqima” (10 RMB/bag);
    • Dwellings Visit: Yan Family Mansion (Ticket 30 RMB/person), see the “Four Courtyards and Five Skywells” layout, listen to the explanation of Bai “Three-Course Tea” (includes performance, extra 50 RMB/person for experience);
    • Tie-dye Introduction: “Puzhen Tie-dye Museum” in the town (Free), see indigo-dyed cloth drying and learn about the “Jiaoxie” craft.

🕒Afternoon: Zhoucheng Village · Handmade Tie-dye

  • Cultural Background: Zhoucheng is the “Hometown of Bai Tie-dye,” a technique dating back to the Ming Dynasty and listed as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage in 2006.
  • Experience Process (Approx. 2 hours, 80 RMB/person):
    • Learn the tying process (wrapping cotton thread around cloth to form patterns);
    • Soak in Isatis root dye (natural plant dye, smells like fresh grass);
    • Untie and dry, then take home your own tie-dyed square scarf (approx. 30cm × 30cm).
  • Tips: Protect yourself (dye may stain hands), dark-colored clothing recommended.

🕗Evening: Travel to Shangri-La · Highland Adaptation

  • Drive: Dali → Shangri-La approx. 300 km (4 hours), via Dali-Lijiang Highway → Lijiang-Shangri-La Highway, with distant views of the “First Bend of the Yangtze River” along the way.
  • Precautions: Shangri-La altitude is 3459 meters, avoid strenuous exercise; prepare oxygen cylinders (available in Ancient City, 30 RMB/bottle) and sunscreen (strong UV rays).
  • Accommodation Arrangement: Hotels around Dukezong Ancient City (e.g., “Songtsam Linka”, Tibetan style with breakfast; or “Tashi Delek Hotel”, budget option).

Day 5: Shangri-La · Highland Sacred Land and Tibetan Life

Itinerary Overview: Potatso National Park (8:30-12:30) → Songzanlin Monastery (13:30-15:30) → Dukezong Ancient City (16:00-18:30) → Tibetan Home Visit (19:00-20:30)

🕗Morning: Potatso National Park (China’s First National Park)

  • Core Landscape and Tour Route (Approx. 4 hours, including shuttle bus):
    • Shudu Lake (Altitude 3800m): The first stop after taking the shuttle bus (included in ticket, 100 RMB/person). Stroll along the 3.3 km wooden boardwalk to see the “highland lake + meadow + yak” combined landscape. Wildflowers (Globeflower/Stellera chamaejasme) bloom from May to October.
    • Bita Lake (Altitude 3539m): Continue by shuttle bus to the terminus, walk 1 km on the boardwalk to the lakeside. Observe the “Rhododendrons Drunk Fish” wonder (May-June: rhododendron petals fall into the lake, fish eat them and float like they are drunk).
  • Tips: Large temperature difference (bring a windbreaker even in summer), keep activity gentle, but do not assume this prevents altitude illness; do not feed yaks in Tibetan pasture areas.

🕑Afternoon: Songzanlin Monastery (Little Potala Palace)

  • Architecture and Culture: Built in the 18th year of Emperor Kangxi (1679). It is a five-story Tibetan-style tower complex covering 53 hectares, housing cultural relics like palm-leaf scriptures and gilded copper Buddhas. It is known as the “Tibetan Buddhist Art Museum.”
  • Visit Highlights:
    • Main Hall “Zha Cang” (Internal visit allowed, no photos): See murals of the “Epic of King Gesar,” listen to monks debating (daily debates 15:00-16:00, free to observe);
    • Hilltop Viewpoint: A 15-minute walk to the top for a panoramic view of the “Monastery + Lamuyangcuo Lake,” where the water changes between blue and green with the light.
  • Opening Hours: 8:00-18:00, Ticket 75 RMB/person (including shuttle bus).

🕗Evening: Dukezong Ancient City · Prayer Wheels

  • History and Layout: Built in the 8th year of Emperor Zhenguan (634). A major town on the Ancient Tea Horse Road, it preserves over 300 Tibetan-style dwellings. The central “Sifang Street” is the site of caravan trade.
  • Must-do Experience:
    • Guishan Park Prayer Wheel (18:00-19:00): The world’s largest prayer wheel (21 meters high, weighing 60 tons). It takes at least 3 people to turn it. Turn it clockwise 3 times for luck (Free, incense offerings 10 RMB/person);
    • Moonlight Square: Watch the Tibetan tower light show (20:00-21:00 daily), and listen to local elders play and sing “Xianzi.”

🕙Night: Tibetan Home Visit

  • Arrangement Details: We arrange a visit to a Tibetan home near Dukezong Ancient City (e.g., “Dolma’s Home”), including a simple Tibetan meal experience (approx. 50 RMB/person).
  • Interactive Content:
    • Learn to churn butter tea (ingredients provided, hand-make 1 pot, take a small portion to try);
    • Try “Barley flour lumps” (eaten with butter tea), “Milk residue cakes” (sweet and sour, 5 RMB/piece);

Day 6: Shangri-La → Lijiang · Gorges, River Bends, and Ancient City Encounters

Itinerary Overview: Depart Shangri-La toward Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge (morning transfer) → Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge (12:30-14:30) → First Bend of the Yangtze River (15:00-16:00) → Lijiang Ancient City (16:30-19:30) → Black Dragon Pond Park (19:30-20:30)

🕗Morning: Transportation and Tiger Leaping Gorge

  • Drive: Shangri-La → Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge approx. 180 km (4 hours), via G214 National Road, with distant views of “Haba Snow Mountain” (Altitude 5396m).
  • Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge Tour (Ticket 45 RMB/person, including shuttle bus):
    • Use the open visitor paths and designated viewing platforms for views of Tiger Leaping Rock and the Jinsha River rapids. Allow for steps and the return climb rather than relying on a fixed 20-minute descent;
    • Do not add a ladder descent or an unofficial riverside route on the assumption that it is part of this Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge visit. Confirm the exact open route with the operator; youth alone is not evidence of suitability.
  • Tips: Wind is strong in the gorge, wear a hat to protect from sand; those afraid of heights should choose the gorge-bottom route with caution.

Afternoon: First Bend of the Yangtze River

  • Viewing Experience: Drive approx. 30 minutes along National Road 214 to arrive. Climb the “Viewing Platform” (Free) to overlook the “U” shape bend (180-degree turn) of the Jinsha River, and learn about the geological changes where “the Yangtze River changed its course here.”
  • Optional Stop: “Tea Horse Road Museum” by the bend (Ticket 20 RMB/person, see caravan stirrups, leather saddles, and other artifacts).

🕑Afternoon: Arrival in Lijiang · First Exploration of the Ancient City

  • Arrival and Check-in: Arrive in Lijiang at 16:30, check into a guesthouse around the ancient city (e.g., “Shuhe Yashu,” Naxi courtyard room; or “Lijiang Blossom Hill Inn,” view room).
  • Free Time Suggestions:
    • Sifang Street (17:00-18:00): Wander through Naxi “Three Rooms and a Screen Wall” dwellings, and see the “Big Water Wheel” landmark (free photo);
    • Mu Mansion (Ticket 40 RMB/person, “Forbidden City in the North, Mu Mansion in the South”): Climb the Wanjuan Tower for a panoramic view of the ancient city and learn about Naxi Tusi culture.

🕘Evening: Black Dragon Pond Park · Snow Mountain Reflection

  • Landscape Highlight: The water in front of “Deyue Tower” can reflect Jade Dragon Snow Mountain in clear, calm conditions. Plan reflection photography in daylight; the best time varies with season and weather, and the late-evening itinerary slot is not a daylight guarantee.
  • Tips: Park is free to enter, Hanfu rental available (30 RMB/hour) for photos by the pond.

🍽️Dining Instructions

  • Breakfast: Included at hotel (Naxi Baba/Rice Sausage/Pea Flour Soup).
  • Lunch: “Tiger Leaping Gorge Farmhouse” (at Upper Tiger Leaping Gorge entrance), try Jinsha River Fish (freshly caught and cooked, 80 RMB/fish), wild mountain vegetables (20 RMB/serving), average 60 RMB/person.

🍽️DiningInstructions(7)🍽️DiningInstructions(8)

Day 7: Lijiang · Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Naxi Culture

Itinerary Overview: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (8:30-14:00) → Blue Moon Valley (14:30-16:00) → Baisha Murals (afternoon; confirm the last-entry time and allow a complete visit before closing) → Shuhe Ancient Town (Free time after 17:30)

🕗Morning: Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (Naxi Holy Mountain)

  • Core Experience (Includes entrance fee + Spruce Meadow Cableway, 240 RMB/person):
    • Glacier Park Big Ropeway (Optional, extra 140 RMB/person, reaches 4506m, requires booking 1 day in advance);
    • Spruce Meadow Ropeway (Our arrangement): Altitude 3240m, alpine meadow within a primitive spruce forest. Wildflowers in summer, snow scenery combining “mountain + meadow” in winter.
  • Precautions: Spruce Meadow and the optional Glacier Park cableway are different altitude exposures; the 4506m figure refers to the Glacier Park upper station, not the included Spruce Meadow visit. Do not rely on taking Rhodiola one hour beforehand to prevent illness. Discuss prevention with a clinician before travel, and do not ascend if you have altitude-illness symptoms. Oxygen cans and snacks are not a substitute for assessment or descent.

Afternoon: Blue Moon Valley · “Little Jiuzhaigou”

  • Landscape Characteristics: 4 lakes and 1 river formed by snow melt. Yuye Lake (blue-green), Jingtan Lake (crystal clear), Baishui River (milky white due to water hitting white calcifications).
  • Tour Route: Wooden boardwalks connect the lakes. Highlight is Yuye Lake Viewpoint (for snow mountain + lake panorama). Stay on the open boardwalks and designated viewing areas; do not enter the water for photographs or cooling off.

🕑Afternoon: Baisha Murals · Multi-Religious Art

  • History and Highlights: The surviving mural ensembles date to the Ming and Qing periods and are preserved in buildings including Dabaoji Palace, Liuli Hall and Dading Pavilion. Their art reflects exchanges among Han, Tibetan, Naxi and other cultural traditions.
  • Visit Highlights:
    • Dabaoji Palace Murals (the largest one, 21.6 square meters, depicting scenes like “Manjushri riding a lion”);
    • Ask whether an explanation about the murals and their conservation is available during your confirmed visit. An arrival after 16:00 would miss a 16:00 session; allow time for admission and the visit before closing.
  • Opening Hours: 9:00-17:00, Ticket 30 RMB/person.

🕕Evening: Shuhe Ancient Town · Quiet Time

  • Free Time Suggestions (Not a fixed itinerary, can visit on your own):
    • Qinglong Bridge (17:30-18:30): See the ancient bridge and water under the sunset. Nearby “Tea Horse Road Museum” (Ticket 10 RMB/person, see caravan bronze bells, leather saddles);
    • Jiuding Dragon Pond: Clear spring water gushes from underground. Experience the slow life with Naxi elders chatting and weaving nearby.
  • Dining Recommendations (Shuhe): “Shuhe Jelly” (5 RMB/bowl, with mint), “Roasted Erkuai with You-tiao” (8 RMB/piece).

🍽️Dining Instructions

  • Breakfast: Included at hotel (Naxi Five-color Flower Rice / Water Braised Baba).
  • Lunch: “Snow Mountain Restaurant” in the scenic area (Buffet including yak meat/wild mushrooms/vegetables, 88 RMB/person, pre-included in package).

Breathlessness at rest, confusion or loss of coordination requires urgent medical help and descent as soon as possible. See CDC guidance on altitude illness.
  • Cultural Taboos: No photos inside Tibetan temples, do not step on thresholds; Naxi “Three Rooms and a Screen Wall” dwellings—do not enter inner rooms without permission.
