Lijiang Railway Station is about 10 kilometers from Lijiang Old Town. Under normal traffic conditions, the journey takes around 20–30 minutes by car and 35–50 minutes by public bus.
In this guide, “Lijiang Old Town” mainly refers to Dayan Old Town. It does not refer to Shuhe Ancient Town or Baisha Ancient Town. These three destinations use different routes, so check the final stop before boarding a tourist shuttle or arranging a pickup.
Travelers who have not yet chosen their train can first read the 2026 Yunnan high-speed rail timetable and ticket guide. Your arrival time will help determine whether public buses are still running or whether you should book a pickup in advance.
Do not choose transportation based only on price. Lijiang Old Town covers a large area, and most vehicles can only stop outside the pedestrian zone. The entrance where you get off can determine how far you need to walk with your luggage.
The prices and travel times below are general estimates for normal traffic conditions. Waiting and driving times may increase during public holidays, peak travel seasons, evening rush hour, rainy weather, or periods when several trains arrive close together. Bus routes, tourist shuttles, and ride-hailing prices may also change. Check live navigation, station signs, and messages from your accommodation on the day of travel.
Table of Contents
ToggleTransport Comparison
| Option | Estimated Cost | Estimated Time | After Drop-off | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bus No. 4 | About RMB 2 per person | About 40–50 minutes | Usually requires walking into the old town | Hotels near the north side or Old Town Entrance |
| Bus No. 18 | About RMB 2 per person | About 35–45 minutes | Useful for entering from Zhongyi Market or the south side | Hotels near Zhongyi Market or Bailong Square |
| Tourist shuttle | Check at the station | About 30–50 minutes | Stops near major entrances | First-time visitors unfamiliar with local buses |
| Taxi | About RMB 30–45 per vehicle | About 20–30 minutes | Can take you to a specified old town entrance | Two or more travelers or passengers with luggage |
| Ride-hailing car | About RMB 25–45 per vehicle | About 20–35 minutes | Requires an accurate pickup and drop-off point | Travelers who want to see the estimated fare in advance |
| Guesthouse pickup | About RMB 40–80 per vehicle | About 25–40 minutes | Staff may guide you or help with luggage | Late arrivals or guests staying deep inside the old town |
The times above mainly cover waiting and vehicle travel. They may not include the walk from the entrance to your guesthouse. If your accommodation is near Sifang Street, deep inside Wuyi Street, on Lion Hill, or inside a narrow lane, allow another 10–30 minutes.
Public buses are the cheapest choice for one person traveling light. Taxis are usually more convenient for groups of two to four. Families with older travelers, children, or several large suitcases may find a guesthouse pickup easier.
Travelers planning to visit Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang mainly by train and public transport can also read the 7-day Kunming–Dali–Lijiang public transport guide to coordinate intercity trains with local transfers.
Public Bus Routes
Bus No. 4
Bus No. 4 is one of the more practical public bus routes between Lijiang Railway Station and Lijiang Old Town.
A commonly used direction is:
Lijiang Railway Station → Zhongyi Market → Bailong Square → Old Town Entrance → Red Sun Square → Black Dragon Pool
Old Town Entrance is close to the waterwheel and the northern section of the old town. Zhongyi Market is on the southern side. Bus No. 4 can therefore serve travelers staying near either the north or south side.
Suggested stops include:
- For the waterwheel, Xinhua Street, or East Street: get off at Old Town Entrance;
- For Mufu Palace, Guangyi Street, or the southern section of Qiyi Street: get off at Zhongyi Market;
- For Bailong Square or Changshui Road: get off at Bailong Square;
- For a day visit to the waterwheel and Sifang Street without staying overnight: Old Town Entrance is usually more convenient.
The bus journey from the railway station to Old Town Entrance normally takes about 40 minutes. During holidays, peak season, or evening rush hour, it may take more than 50 minutes.
If you have just missed a bus, you must also include waiting time. Allow around 50–70 minutes from leaving the station to reaching the old town entrance.
Check the destination sign on the front of the bus before boarding. Do not board only because you see the number 4. Road construction, holiday traffic restrictions, or temporary route changes may affect stops.
When unsure, show the driver the location sent by your guesthouse and ask which stop is closest.
Bus No. 18
Bus No. 18 is generally more useful for the southern or western side of Lijiang Old Town.
Common drop-off areas include:
- Zhongyi Market;
- Bailong Square;
- Baima Longtan area;
- Stops near the South Gate.
If your guesthouse is near Mufu Palace, Zhongyi Lane, the southern section of Qiyi Street, Nanmen Street, Zhaoqing Market, or the western side of the old town, Bus No. 18 may save walking compared with entering from the north.
Bus Nos. 4 and 18 may both serve areas around the old town, but their stop order, travel direction, and temporary operating arrangements may differ. Check live navigation before boarding and confirm whether the bus passes Zhongyi Market, Bailong Square, or the drop-off point recommended by your accommodation.
Do not assume Bus No. 18 will take you directly to the waterwheel. Travelers staying near Xinhua Street, East Street, Black Dragon Pool, or the northern entrance should compare Bus No. 4 with the tourist shuttle operating that day.
If you are carrying two or more large suitcases, also consider how crowded the bus may be and whether you can move your luggage easily. Groups of two or more should compare the current ride-hailing fare before deciding.
Where to Board
After leaving Lijiang Railway Station, follow signs for buses or public transportation. The bus hub is located beside the station forecourt, so you normally do not need to walk to a distant main road.
After leaving the station, follow these steps:
- Move away from the main passenger flow and open your map;
- Check whether your guesthouse is closer to Old Town Entrance, Zhongyi Market, Bailong Square, or the South Gate;
- Check the live route for Bus No. 4, Bus No. 18, or the tourist shuttle;
- Confirm the correct stop with the driver before boarding;
- Prepare your luggage before reaching the stop so you do not miss it.
Do not simply tell the driver that you are going to “Lijiang Old Town.” Old Town Entrance, Zhongyi Market, Bailong Square, and the South Gate are separated by a considerable distance.
Getting off at the wrong place may leave you pulling luggage for more than 20 minutes.
When several trains arrive close together, the bus area may become busy for a short time. Travelers with heavy luggage or limited time can compare taxi and ride-hailing waiting times instead of relying only on the bus.
Payment
City buses in Lijiang commonly accept mobile payment or cash. Carry a small amount of Chinese currency in case the payment code does not work.
Payment methods may differ between routes. Do not wait until the bus is moving before trying to register for a local transport mini-program.
If mobile payment is unavailable, ask the driver whether cash is accepted. Bus fare boxes usually do not provide change.
International visitors without a Chinese phone number or Chinese mobile payment account should prepare small RMB notes or coins.
Public buses are most suitable for daytime arrivals, light luggage, and accommodation near an outer entrance. When carrying a large suitcase, consider the walking distance after getting off rather than comparing only the ticket price.
Tourist Shuttle
Lijiang Railway Station may operate tourist shuttles or customized bus services to Lijiang Old Town, Shuhe Ancient Town, and other popular areas. Some departures are arranged around train arrival times.
These services are useful for visitors who are unfamiliar with local city buses.
Compared with ordinary public buses, tourist shuttles may offer:
- Routes designed mainly for arriving travelers;
- Stops closer to major old town entrances;
- Departures coordinated with some train arrivals;
- More practical luggage storage;
- Fewer city stops along the way.
Published route information has shown railway station shuttle services connecting areas such as Zhongyi Market, Nanmen Street, and Old Town Entrance. However, the stop order and timetable may change. Do not treat an old route list as the fixed schedule for your travel date.
After arriving, check the official route boards or ask staff in the station bus area. Tourist shuttles should display their destination, such as the South Gate, North Gate, or Shuhe Ancient Town.
Do not board only because the vehicle says “tourist shuttle.” Confirm that it is going to Dayan Old Town.
Before paying, ask:
- Does the shuttle end at the South Gate or the North Gate?
- Does it stop at Zhongyi Market or Old Town Entrance?
- What is the fare?
- Does it leave at a fixed time or only when enough passengers board?
- Is a transfer required?
- Will there still be a service if the train is delayed?
Some tourist shuttles adjust their departure times according to train delays and passenger demand. However, you should not assume a shuttle will be available at every hour.
For late-night arrivals, keep a taxi, ride-hailing car, or guesthouse pickup as a backup.
Do not confuse people offering private shared rides outside the station with an official tourist shuttle. Official vehicles normally have clear route information, a designated boarding area, and visible fare details.
Taxi Cost
Taxi
A regular taxi from Lijiang Railway Station to an entrance of Lijiang Old Town normally costs around RMB 30–45.
The final fare may depend on:
- Whether you are going to the North Gate, Zhongyi Market, or the South Gate;
- Evening rush hour or peak tourist season;
- Traffic around the old town;
- Night pricing and waiting time;
- Whether your drop-off point is on the farther side of the old town.
Follow station signs to the official taxi queue. Avoid following people who approach you inside or outside the station and lead you toward an unclear parking location.
Do not tell the driver only that you want to go to the old town. Give a specific destination, such as:
- Lijiang Old Town North Gate or Old Town Entrance;
- Zhongyi Market;
- The South Gate vehicle drop-off area;
- Bailong Square;
- The vehicle-accessible location sent by your guesthouse.
If your guesthouse has sent a map location, show it directly to the driver. This is more reliable than giving only the guesthouse name.
Some properties have similar names, and the map marker for a guesthouse may not match the nearest point accessible by car.
Driving normally takes about 20–30 minutes. From the train arriving to leaving the station, queuing for a taxi, and reaching the old town entrance, allow around 30–50 minutes.
If you still need to walk inside the old town, the full journey to your accommodation may take 40–60 minutes.
If a driver recommends tours, performances, chartered cars, or shopping stops, you can decline. There is no need to purchase additional travel products during the ride.
Ride-Hailing Car
A ride-hailing car usually costs around RMB 25–45. Prices may rise during rain, late-night periods, holidays, or high-demand times.
The main advantages are:
- You can see the estimated fare before booking;
- The app records the driver, plate number, and route;
- You can use the exact location sent by your accommodation;
- Pricing or location problems can be handled through the platform.
Do not set your destination as “Sifang Street” or “the center of Lijiang Old Town.” These locations are usually inside pedestrian lanes, and cars cannot drive directly to them.
More practical destinations include:
- Old Town Entrance or Lijiang Old Town North Gate;
- Zhongyi Market;
- Bailong Square;
- The South Gate vehicle drop-off area;
- The car-accessible location provided by your guesthouse.
The station forecourt is large, and phone positioning may be slightly inaccurate. After the driver accepts your booking, check the pickup point shown in the app.
If you cannot find the vehicle, send a photograph of a nearby sign, parking area, or building. Saying only “I am outside the railway station” may not be enough.
If the driver asks you to move to another pickup area, confirm that it is easy to reach and still within an official pickup zone. Do not drag luggage toward an isolated location without clear signs.
For groups of two to four, ride-hailing is often more practical than the bus. Four bus tickets may cost around RMB 8 in total, while a car may cost a little over RMB 30.
The extra cost per person may be small compared with the time and effort saved.
Ride-hailing is not always cheaper than a taxi. During surge pricing, compare the estimated app fare with the taxi queue and choose the faster or more economical option.
Guesthouse Pickup
A guesthouse pickup is often the easiest choice for travelers staying inside Lijiang Old Town.
The main advantage is not necessarily a better vehicle. A driver working with the property is more likely to know:
- Which entrance is closest to the guesthouse;
- Which roads are temporarily closed or under construction;
- Where luggage should be transferred;
- Whether staff can meet you outside;
- Which entrance is easier for a late-night arrival.
Pickup prices commonly range from around RMB 40–80 per vehicle. Some properties offer free pickup depending on the room type, number of nights, or arrival time.
There is no single standard. Ask the property to confirm all free pickup conditions and charges in the booking platform or chat record.
Travelers who have not yet chosen where to stay can read the Lijiang Old Town guesthouse selection guide. In addition to photographs and reviews, check the distance from the nearest vehicle drop-off point, the number of steps, and whether luggage transfer is included.
Price per Vehicle or Person
Confirm whether the quoted amount is the total cost for one vehicle or a price per person.
For groups of three or four, a per-vehicle price is usually better. If the service is shared, ask whether you must wait for other passengers, whether the vehicle will make several stops, and whether there is enough luggage space.
Also confirm the vehicle size. Four adults with four large suitcases may not fit into an ordinary sedan. A larger vehicle or two cars may be required.
Can the Car Reach the Door?
Much of central Lijiang Old Town is pedestrian-only, and many lanes are closed to ordinary vehicles.
When a guesthouse says it will take you “to the property,” this may mean the driver will stop at the nearest entrance and staff will guide you or carry the luggage from there.
Before booking, ask:
- Where will the vehicle stop?
- How many minutes must you walk from the vehicle to the guesthouse?
- Are there slopes or stairs?
- Will someone wait at the entrance if you arrive at night?
Luggage Assistance
Lijiang Old Town has stone-paved streets, slopes, and steps. Large rolling suitcases can be difficult to move.
Ask whether the guesthouse will provide staff, a luggage cart, or another luggage service. Also confirm whether this service is included in the room price or pickup fee.
If you are traveling with older adults, children, or someone with limited mobility, tell the guesthouse in advance and provide the number and size of your bags.
Train Delays
Send the guesthouse your train number, estimated arrival time, and contact details in advance. Confirm whether the driver will continue waiting if the train is delayed.
Also ask:
- How much free waiting time is included?
- Is there an additional waiting fee after a long delay?
- Will the driver track the train arrival time?
- How will you confirm the plate number if the driver changes?
- Where should you contact the driver after leaving the station?
Save the driver’s phone number, plate number, and pickup location. Do not rely only on a message saying, “Contact me when you arrive.”
If your train is seriously delayed, send a message before arrival to confirm whether the arrangement has changed.
Choosing the Right Entrance
Lijiang Old Town has several entrances. Getting off at the wrong one may create more inconvenience than paying a slightly higher fare.
Do not judge the best entrance only by the property’s distance from Sifang Street. Check the street name, nearest vehicle-accessible point, slopes, and stairs.
Old Town Entrance
Old Town Entrance is close to the large waterwheel, East Street, and Xinhua Street. It is one of the best-known entrances on the northern side.
It is suitable for accommodation near:
- The large waterwheel;
- The northern section of Xinhua Street;
- East Street;
- The northern section of Wuyi Street;
- Black Dragon Pool.
It is also a convenient entrance for a day visit. From here, travelers can visit the waterwheel before continuing toward East Street and Sifang Street.
The area can become busy with people and vehicles, especially during peak-season evenings. Ride-hailing vehicles may not be able to stop for long, so have your luggage ready and agree on a clear meeting point with the guesthouse.
“Old Town Entrance,” “the waterwheel,” and “the North Gate” are sometimes used as if they are the same place. However, map markers may differ slightly. Use the exact location sent by your accommodation.
Zhongyi Market
Zhongyi Market is on the southern side of Lijiang Old Town and is an important drop-off point for travelers arriving by bus.
It is suitable for accommodation near:
- Mufu Palace;
- Guangyi Street;
- Zhongyi Lane;
- The southern section of Qiyi Street;
- Xingwen Lane;
- The southern part of the old town.
From Zhongyi Market, Mufu Palace and Qiyi Street are relatively convenient. The waterwheel, Black Dragon Pool, and the northern side are farther away.
The area around the market has restaurants, convenience stores, and places to buy daily supplies. It can be useful if you want food, water, or basic items before checking in.
The market has several surrounding roads and entrances. Do not use only “Zhongyi Market” as the meeting point.
Ask the guesthouse which side of the market to use or request a specific shop, road junction, or parking area.
Bailong Square
Bailong Square is southwest of the old town. The surrounding roads are relatively wide, making it easier for taxis and buses to stop.
It is suitable for accommodation near:
- Bailong Pool;
- Changshui Road;
- Xianghe Road;
- The southwestern side of the old town;
- Hotels outside Zhongyi Market.
If your hotel is outside the central pedestrian area, Bailong Square may be easier than the waterwheel area.
Travelers staying on the western side may also avoid traffic around the busy northern entrance by getting off here.
Bailong Square and the South Gate are not the same place. Do not treat them as one location simply because both are on the southern side.
South Gate
The South Gate is suitable for accommodation near Nanmen Street, Bahe Street, Zhaoqing Market, and the southeastern part of the old town.
It is not the same location as Zhongyi Market. Ask the property whether you should use Zhongyi Market or the South Gate vehicle drop-off area.
Qiyi Street is long, so the street name alone is not enough to choose an entrance. Some properties are closer to Zhongyi Market, while others are closer to the South Gate.
When using a ride-hailing app, enter the vehicle-accessible point provided by the guesthouse instead of an address inside a pedestrian lane.
North Gate Slope
Some properties using “North Gate,” “Jinhong Road,” or “Wuyi Street” in their name are closer to North Gate Slope rather than the large waterwheel.
Some roads in this area are steep. Travelers with luggage should ask for an exact drop-off location before arrival.
Accommodation on Lion Hill, the western side of Xinhua Street, or another hillside may look close on a map but still require climbing slopes or steps.
Before booking, ask the guesthouse: “How many minutes is the walk from the nearest vehicle drop-off point, and are there continuous slopes or stairs?”
This question is more useful than asking only how far the property is from Sifang Street.
Arriving at Night
Do not rely on an ordinary public bus as your only plan when arriving at night.
Lijiang may operate railway station shuttles or customized buses according to train arrivals. However, service can change based on passenger demand, train delays, and operating arrangements.
For a night arrival, use this order:
- Check whether an official old town shuttle is operating;
- Contact the guesthouse and confirm whether a driver has been arranged;
- Use the official taxi queue;
- Book a car through a ride-hailing platform.
For arrivals after 10:00 p.m., families with children, or guests staying deep inside the old town, advance pickup is usually the easiest option.
Although taxis and ride-hailing cars are often available, no one may be waiting at the old town entrance to guide you or help with luggage.
If your train arrives close to the final public bus departure, do not look only at the timetable. Include the time needed for the train to stop, passengers to leave, and you to find the bus area.
If there is not enough time, use a taxi, ride-hailing car, or booked pickup.
Late at night, confirm that the guesthouse reception will be open, someone will meet you, and luggage assistance will still be available.
Do not automatically believe people outside the station who say that all buses have stopped or that app-based cars cannot enter the station. Check the official signs and your ride-hailing app first.
Luggage Tips
The main difficulty with luggage inside Lijiang Old Town is not straight-line distance. It is the stone surface, slopes, and stairs.
Common conditions include:
- Uneven stone-paved streets;
- Small hills and longer uphill sections;
- Steps;
- Narrow lanes;
- Slippery surfaces after rain;
- Pedestrian areas where normal vehicles cannot enter.
A small suitcase of around 20 inches is easier to manage. A large hard-shell suitcase, a case with small wheels, or two or more heavy bags can be difficult.
Small suitcase wheels may become caught between stones, and dragging luggage for a long distance can damage the wheels.
When carrying large luggage, consider:
- Hotels near an old town entrance;
- Guesthouses offering luggage transfer;
- Accommodation outside the pedestrian zone where cars can stop nearby;
- Areas with fewer stairs and gentler slopes;
- Leaving large bags at a storage location and carrying only a small overnight bag.
Do not choose a property only because it is “500 meters from Sifang Street.” Ask:
- How long is the walk from the vehicle drop-off point?
- Are there slopes or stairs?
- Is a luggage cart available?
- Is luggage transfer free or charged separately?
- Will staff meet you at night?
- Where can a vehicle stop during rain?
If you must catch an early train the next morning, visit Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, or change hotels frequently, staying outside the central old town may be more convenient than staying deep inside the pedestrian area.
Special Travel Needs
Traveling with Older Adults
Travelers with older family members should consider a taxi or booked pickup to reduce waiting, transfers, and walking on stone streets.
Choose accommodation near Old Town Entrance, Zhongyi Market, Bailong Square, or the South Gate. Avoid properties that require long uphill walks, many steps, or deep access through narrow lanes.
Before booking, confirm:
- How close a vehicle can get;
- Whether the walk from the drop-off point is flat;
- Whether the property has an elevator;
- Whether the room requires climbing stairs;
- Whether staff can help with luggage.
Lijiang is at a relatively high elevation. Older travelers should not rush, carry heavy luggage, or climb a long slope immediately after arriving.
If someone develops significant dizziness, chest discomfort, or other physical symptoms, stop and rest instead of continuing deep into the old town.
Families who want to reduce daily walking and control high-altitude exposure can read the 6-day senior-friendly Yunnan itinerary to compare the physical demands of Dayan Old Town, Shuhe Ancient Town, and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.
Traveling with Children
When using a stroller, check whether there are stairs near your guesthouse. Some old town lanes are unsuitable for strollers with small wheels.
A lightweight folding stroller or child carrier may be more practical.
Child safety seats usually need to be requested in advance. Do not assume an ordinary taxi, ride-hailing car, or guesthouse pickup vehicle will provide one.
For a night arrival, choose a vehicle that can take you directly to the agreed entrance. One adult can supervise the child while another handles the luggage.
Families continuing to Shuhe, Baisha, or Jade Dragon Snow Mountain can read the 8-day family-friendly Yunnan itinerary to compare Dayan Old Town and Shuhe Ancient Town for street width, quietness, and family accommodation.
Limited Mobility
Travelers with limited mobility should prioritize accommodation outside or near the edge of the old town.
Do not choose a property only because it appears close to Sifang Street on a map.
Before booking, confirm:
- Whether a wheelchair can travel from the drop-off point to the property;
- Whether the route includes stone steps or narrow passages;
- Whether the property has an accessible entrance;
- Whether a vehicle can stop at the nearest road;
- Whether staff can assist with boarding, luggage, or access.
Some properties appear close on a map but require slopes or steps. For wheelchair users and travelers with limited mobility, the actual walking surface matters more than straight-line distance.
Common Problems
Private Shared Rides
Some people outside Lijiang Railway Station may offer shared rides and quote a per-person price.
Calculate the total cost before agreeing. For example, four passengers paying RMB 15 each would pay RMB 60 in total, which may be more expensive than booking one ride-hailing car.
Ask:
- Must you wait for other passengers?
- Will the driver make several detours?
- Which entrance is the final drop-off point?
- Is there enough room for all luggage?
- Are the vehicle and driver details clearly provided?
A shared ride is not automatically a problem, but the price, route, waiting time, and vehicle information should be transparent.
Avoid vehicles without a clear plate number, agreed price, or confirmed drop-off point.
Unclear Pricing
Statements such as “a few dozen yuan,” “about that much,” or “we will decide when we arrive” are not clear quotations.
Before boarding, confirm:
- The total fare;
- Whether the price is per person or per vehicle;
- Whether parking or waiting fees are included;
- Whether the driver will use your specified entrance;
- Whether the ride will be shared;
- Whether any additional fees may be charged.
Ride-hailing fares should follow the platform order. Taxis should use the local metering system. Guesthouse pickup prices and services should be confirmed in writing.
Wrong Map Location
Using only “Lijiang Old Town” as the destination can lead to the wrong location.
The correct order is:
Contact the guesthouse → confirm the nearest entrance → obtain a car-accessible location → book the vehicle.
The official address of a guesthouse may not be accessible by car. Some map apps place the destination inside a pedestrian lane, forcing the driver to choose another drop-off point.
Visitors entering only for sightseeing can choose based on their first destination. Use Old Town Entrance for the waterwheel and East Street. Use Zhongyi Market for Mufu Palace, Qiyi Street, and the southern section.
Very Cheap Pickup Offers
If a pickup price is far below the usual range, confirm whether it is a shared ride, the vehicle type, waiting time, and exact drop-off point.
Some low-cost services may recommend chartered cars, performances, tours, or shopping stops during the journey.
You are free to decline. A pickup service should primarily take you safely to the agreed entrance at the agreed price.
Which Option Should You Choose?
One person, daytime arrival, light luggage: Use Bus No. 4 or Bus No. 18 after confirming the nearest entrance.
Staying near the waterwheel or Xinhua Street: Use Bus No. 4 to Old Town Entrance or take a car to the northern drop-off area.
Staying near Mufu Palace, Guangyi Street, or southern Qiyi Street: Use a bus to Zhongyi Market or take a car to the entrance recommended by the property.
Staying near Nanmen Street, Zhaoqing Market, or Bahe Street: Confirm the South Gate drop-off point instead of automatically choosing Zhongyi Market.
Two to four travelers: A taxi or ride-hailing car usually saves time, and the per-person cost remains reasonable.
Older adults, children, or several large suitcases: Arrange a guesthouse pickup and confirm whether luggage transfer is included.
Arriving after 10:00 p.m.: Use a pre-arranged pickup, official taxi, or ride-hailing car. Do not rely only on a public bus.
Staying deep inside the old town: Confirm whether someone will meet you, carry luggage, and guide you through slopes or steps.
Visiting only for sightseeing: Use Old Town Entrance for the waterwheel and Sifang Street. Consider Zhongyi Market for Mufu Palace and the southern side. Store large luggage before entering if necessary.
Continuing to Shangri-La: Lijiang Old Town can be used as an overnight stop, but you should also consider the time required to walk from the guesthouse to the next pickup point. For full intercity transportation and accommodation planning, read the Northwest Yunnan loop transportation and accommodation guide.
Prefer not to arrange each transfer yourself: Review the transportation and accommodation plan in the 7-day Northwest Yunnan cultural tour. Before booking, confirm whether Lijiang Railway Station pickup, old town luggage transfer, and free time are included.
Frequently Asked Questions
How Far Is Lijiang Railway Station from Lijiang Old Town?
The road distance is about 10 kilometers, depending on whether you travel to Old Town Entrance, Zhongyi Market, Bailong Square, or the South Gate.
Under normal conditions, driving takes around 20–30 minutes and a public bus takes around 35–50 minutes.
Including station exit, waiting, and walking from the entrance, allow approximately 40–70 minutes to reach your accommodation.
How Much Is the Bus?
An ordinary city bus usually costs around RMB 2 per person. Tourist shuttle fares may differ, so check the station signs and announcements.
Mobile payment options may vary by route. Carry a small amount of Chinese cash as a backup.
Which Bus Should I Take?
For the northern side, the waterwheel, and Old Town Entrance, check Bus No. 4 first.
For Zhongyi Market, Bailong Square, and the southern side, compare Bus Nos. 4 and 18.
Routes may change temporarily. Confirm the direction and stop before boarding. If your accommodation is near the South Gate, North Gate Slope, or the eastern section of Wuyi Street, ask the guesthouse which entrance is best.
How Much Is a Taxi?
A taxi or ride-hailing car usually costs around RMB 25–45. Prices may increase during peak season, rain, late-night periods, high demand, or when several trains arrive together.
For groups of two to four, compare the total vehicle cost instead of only the per-person bus fare. A car costs more but can reduce waiting and luggage handling.
Can Cars Enter Lijiang Old Town?
Most cars can only stop outside the pedestrian area. Sifang Street, Mufu Palace, and most internal lanes must be reached on foot.
Even when a guesthouse says it provides transport “to the property,” the vehicle may stop at the nearest entrance before staff take you and your luggage inside.
Is Guesthouse Pickup Worth It?
Pickup is useful for first-time visitors, late-night arrivals, travelers with large luggage, and guests staying inside the old town.
Before booking, confirm the total price, vehicle type, whether the ride is shared, waiting time, final drop-off point, and luggage service.
If your accommodation is outside the old town, you arrive during the day, and you have light luggage, an ordinary ride-hailing car may offer more flexibility.
Return journey: When traveling from Lijiang Old Town back to Lijiang Railway Station, do not calculate only the 20–30-minute driving time. Include the walk from your guesthouse to the pickup point, vehicle waiting time, traffic, and station security checks. During normal periods, leave your accommodation at least 1.5 hours before departure. Allow more time during holidays, peak season, rush hour, or when staying deep inside the old town.
Information notice: All prices, times, and routes in this guide are estimates. Bus routes, tourist shuttle services, pickup prices, and traffic restrictions may change. On the day of travel, check live maps, station signs, and the nearest vehicle-accessible location with your accommodation.
