ToggleDay 1: Arrive in Urumqi before evening, pack luggage and confirm vehicle in the evening
I will not arrange official attractions on the first day. After arriving in Xinjiang, it is more important to sort out your accommodation, vehicles, luggage, and documents first than to go out for sightseeing immediately. The next few days will be a long drive and there will be many transfers in scenic spots. If you sleep well on the first night, your condition will be significantly better the next day.
If I could choose a flight, I would try to arrive before evening. After landing, go to the hotel to check in, have a simple Xinjiang meal in the evening, and buy water, paper towels, wet wipes, lip balm and a few snacks for the road. The climate in Xinjiang is dry. You may not feel it when you first arrive. However, starting from the next day when you sit in a car for a long time, your lips and nasal cavity will be more obvious.
| time period | Arrangement | Details |
|---|---|---|
| Before evening | Arrived in Urumqi | After picking up your luggage, go to the hotel first. It is not recommended to drag the suitcase around. |
| Dinner time | Eat the first meal of Xinjiang cuisine | Noodles, pilaf, barbecue, and yogurt are all fine, don’t order too much |
| After dinner | Supply | Water, paper towels, wet wipes, fruit, bread, lip balm |
| Before going to bed | Organize your bag for the next day | Put your ID card, power bank, jacket, sunglasses, and tissues in a fixed location |
When staying in Urumqi, I would choose a place with convenient transportation, such as along the airport, near the high-speed rail station, or next to the main road in the city. There is no need to pursue a room with a view on the first night. The key is to have a good start the next morning. Whether it is possible to park in front of the hotel, whether there is a convenience store nearby, and whether it is convenient to eat in the morning, these are more practical than room decoration.
For dinner, I usually order fried pork noodles, a few skewers of barbecued meat, and a cup of yogurt. Don’t be too excited when you first arrive in Xinjiang. Order a large plate of chicken, grilled buns, pilaf, and barbecue for a whole table at once. If you eat too much, you will feel uncomfortable riding in the car for a long time the next day.
When I arrive in Urumqi on the first day, I usually put all my documents in a small fixed bag. You may need your ID card later when you enter a hotel, enter a scenic spot, or take a shuttle bus. Put it back immediately after use. This will save a lot of time searching for it after a few days of walking.

Day 2: Depart from Urumqi and take S21, stay in Burqin at night
The next day is the official start of the long-term. I will set the departure time around eight in the morning. Leaving the city too late will affect the time to arrive in Burqin. Take S21 from Urumqi to Burqin. The road is mainly dominated by Gobi, sandy land, windmills, and distant mountains. The scenery is broad, but the ride is not short, so you need to arrange for rest.
Don’t schedule too many stops on this day. The focus is to get to Burqin safely, smoothly and comfortably. When you see a suitable service area on the road, get out of the car and move around. Don’t sit still. Xinjiang has a long way to go, and physical comfort is more important than rushing for half an hour.
| time period | Itinerary | My arrangement |
|---|---|---|
| Around eight o’clock in the morning | Departure from Urumqi | Confirm the fuel level, route, car water and paper towels before leaving the city |
| Around ten thirty in the morning | Rest in the service area | Go to the bathroom, replenish water, and stretch your legs and feet |
| noon | Simple lunch | You can mix noodles, pilaf, or rice bowl, but don’t eat too oily |
| Afternoon | Continue to Burqin | Eat less salty snacks in the car and drink more water |
| Evening | Arrive at Burqin | Check in first, then go to eat |
| Evening | Burqin Night Market or County Dinner | Grilled fish, barbecue and kvass can be arranged |
Burqin is a very suitable place to stay before entering Kanas. The county is not big, so meals and supplies are convenient. I would choose a hotel near the main street. It has convenient parking, stable hot water, and no detours when setting off in the morning. Prices will rise significantly during the peak season, so check out accommodation in Kanas and Hemu directions in advance.
Burqin can have grilled fish for dinner. Before ordering fish, ask about the weight, cooking method and price of the fish. One fish plus a vegetarian dish is enough for two people. You can try a cup of kvass. Some people find it sweet, and some people like it very much. You don’t need to order too much at the same time.
- Prepare two or three bottles of water in the car and fill them up on the way. There is no need to buy a box early in the morning.
- Chewing gum, lip balm, and wet wipes are very practical and should be kept within easy reach.
- Don’t eat too much for lunch, as you may get sleepy when riding in the car in the afternoon.
- Check in first when you arrive in Burqin, don’t drag your luggage around.
- Go to bed early at night and get up early when entering Kanas on the third day.

Day 3: Burqin goes to Kanas and sees Kanas Lake and Fish Viewing Platform in the afternoon
On the third day, we entered Kanas Scenic Area. It will take a lot of time to go from Burqin to Jiadengyu and then change scenic spots to enter Kanas. Many people think that starting from Burqin, you can easily play by the lake in the morning. In fact, the distance, admission to the park, and transfers all need to be taken into account.
I will set off from Burqin at around 8:30 in the morning, have a full breakfast, and put my ID card, jacket, sunglasses, power bank and a bottle of water in my bag. Do not bring large luggage into the scenic area and carry it around. The lighter your carry-on bag, the better.
| time period | Arrangement | Key points |
|---|---|---|
| 8:30 in the morning | Departure from Burqin | Leave after breakfast, don’t wait until too late |
| morning | To Jiadengyu | Parking, purchasing tickets, and transferring all take time. |
| around noon | Enter Kanas | First adapt to the rhythm of the scenic spot |
| Afternoon | Kanas Lakeside | Walking along the lakeside trail to see the color of the water and the mountains |
| After three o’clock in the afternoon | Fish viewing platform | Looking at the panoramic view of Kanas Lake, walk slowly if you have normal physical strength |
| Evening | Return to accommodation | If you are staying in the scenic area or Jiadengyu, please confirm in advance. |
Kanas Lake is suitable for walking slowly. When the weather is sunny, the color of the lake will be brighter; when it is cloudy, the color of the lake will be darker and have its own layers. Don’t just take photos at one point and then leave. You can walk along the lakeside trail for a while. There will be fewer people and the view will be more natural.
You need to walk up the steps to the fish viewing platform, so I won’t walk too fast at the beginning. The wind is more obvious at high places, so the jacket is easy to use. When you get up there, look at the light first and then take pictures. It’s usually more comfortable after three o’clock in the afternoon than at noon, and the color of the lake surface and the gradation of the mountains are better.
My arrangements for Kanas have always been conservative: I only catch the lake and the fish viewing platform in the afternoon, and I don’t add too many small spots. The scenic spot is very large, and it takes time to transfer. It is more valuable to pay attention to the core places solidly than to catch up with a few names.
If you stay in a scenic area for dinner, there will be fewer choices than in the county town, and the price will be higher. You can buy some fruits, bread and water in Burqin in advance, which is very useful when you don’t want to eat too much at night. If you stay in Jiadengyu, there are more dining options, but you have to leave early to see Sanwan the next day.

Day 4: Walk to Kanas Sanwan in the morning and enter Hemu Village in the afternoon
The core of the fourth day is Kanas Sanwan and Hemu Village. The three bays are Shenxian Bay, Moon Bay and Wolong Bay, which are suitable for viewing in the morning. The light in the morning is soft, and the river valleys and woods are more layered. Go to Hemu in the afternoon, don’t leave too late. The best experience of Hemu is in the evening and early morning.
Of the three bays, I will give more time to Moon Bay. The curved shape of the river in Moon Bay is very clear and complete when viewed from a height. Check the weather at Shenxian Bay. If there is morning fog, stop for a while. If there is no morning fog, don’t wait. Wolong Bay is suitable for viewing the river valley and the forest as a whole. It only takes ten to twenty minutes to stay.
| Sanwan | Suitable content to watch | Stay suggestions |
|---|---|---|
| Shenxian Bay | Morning fog, water surface, forest | If there is fog, stop more often. If there is no fog, just stop by and watch. |
| Moon Bay | River lines, woods and hillsides | It is recommended to allow more time |
| Wolong Bay | Overall view of the river valley | Suitable for final viewing |
Walking around Sanwan in the morning, your shoes must be comfortable. There are many wooden planks and steps. It may be wet in the morning, so you need to walk steadily. Just put a light jacket, a bottle of water, tissues and a power bank in your carry-on bag. Don’t carry too many things.
After entering Hemu in the afternoon, the pace should slow down. Check into the cabin first and then go for a walk in the village. The beauty of Hemu is not only the viewing platform, but also the wooden houses, paths, birch forests, Hemu River and the bridge are all worth walking slowly. When the evening light falls on the wooden house, it will be more interesting than at noon.
Hemu Accommodation recommends staying in the village. Prices in the village are generally higher, but being able to see the evening and early morning makes the experience much more complete. When booking a room, focus on private bathroom, hot water, heating, location and recent reviews. The sound insulation of the wooden house is average, so try not to choose a location too close to the main road or restaurant.
What mattered most to me when I lived in Hemu was not the room photos, but the hot water and location. As long as it’s easy to get out to the observation deck, the river, and eat, the night is well worth it. The wooden house itself should not be judged by city hotel standards. It will be more comfortable if you have psychological expectations in advance.
For dinner, you can eat local hot pot, rice soup, hand-picked rice, and barbecue. The price of vegetables in the village is higher than that in Burqin, so ordering must be based on the number of people. One staple food plus a hot dish is enough for two people. If you are traveling with many people, you can order a hot pot, which will make it more comfortable to eat after the temperature cools down at night.

Day 5: See Hemu in the early morning, then go to Karamay or Kuitun
On the fifth day, I will get up early to watch the morning view of Hemu. The wooden houses, smoke, birch forests and distant mountains in Hemu in the early morning are a section worth spending time on during the entire trip. Don’t sleep too late the night before so you can easily get to the observation deck the next morning.
To view the morning scenery, adjust the time according to the season. The general approach is to go out half an hour to an hour before sunrise, wear thicker clothes, and bring a mobile phone, camera, tissues and a small amount of water. There are slopes and steps to the observation deck, so you don’t have to walk too fast. When there are many people, walk a few dozen meters to the side and the picture will be cleaner.
- If you go to the observation deck early in the morning, you must bring a jacket. Your body temperature will be much lower than during the day.
- When returning to the village for breakfast, give priority to hot food, including porridge, milk tea, steamed buns, and eggs.
- Check the charger, ID card, and headphones before leaving Hemu. Small items are easily left behind.
- Don’t leave the village too late in the morning, as there is still a long drive on the fifth day.
- Passing through Burqin on the way, you can refill water, buy fruits, and have lunch.
This day from Hemu to Karamay or Kuitun is mainly a transfer. Don’t think that there is no content on the transition day. In fact, it is very important: you walked a lot in the scenic spots and villages in the first few days. On the fifth day, you need to adjust your physical strength to prepare for the trip to Bayinbuluke.
| Accommodation | Suitable for the situation | My suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| Karamay | I want to have a more stable drive that day | There are many hotel options and convenient dinner |
| Kuitun | I want to get closer to Bayinbuluke on the 6th day | It will be harder that day, but less stressful the next day |
I will choose simple and solid rice for dinner. The catering in Karamay or Kuitun is more stable than in the scenic spots. You can eat large plates of chicken, noodles, barbecue, soup and rice, and pepper and sesame chicken. I didn’t necessarily eat regularly in the scenic spots in the past few days. You can have a good meal this night, but don’t end it too late. There is still a long way to go.

Day 6: From Karamay or Kuitun to Nalati and Bayinbuluke
The sixth day is the day from the Altay direction in northern Xinjiang to the Tianshan grassland direction. This route will obviously change from forest lakes to grassland mountains. The scenery changes greatly, but the drive is not short. You can stay in Nalati for the day, or you can go directly to Bayinbuluke. It depends on the road conditions, season and physical strength.
If you want to go steadily, I would recommend staying near Nalati. This way you won’t be too busy on the day, and you’ll have more options for accommodation and meals at night. The next day we went to Bayinbuluke to see the Swan Lake and the Nine Winds and Eighteen Bends, so we had more time. If you have a tight schedule, you can stay in Bayinbuluk directly on the 6th day, but it will be a bit tiring.
| scheme | Route | Suitable for the crowd |
|---|---|---|
| Safe version | Karamay/Kuitun → Nalati | Those who want to travel less and have more comfortable accommodation |
| Compact version | Karamay/Kuitun → Bayinbuluke | Those who want to go directly to Bayinbuluke early in the morning on the 7th day |
| Adjusted version | Temporarily determined according to weather and road conditions | More suitable when encountering weather changes or unstable road times |
It is not recommended to arrange too complicated a meal on this day. For lunch on the road, choose a place for a quick meal, including noodles, pilaf, or rice bowls. When the car ride is long, I prefer to eat hot soup with rice or noodles. It won’t make me feel sleepy after eating. Bring some fruit and bread in the car, but don’t rely on snacks for meals.
If you pass through a grassland section on the road, you must look for a safe location when parking. Do not stop temporarily on the side of the road when you see a good-looking place. Traffic speeds are high on many roads in Xinjiang, so you need to find parking areas, viewing spots or wide and safe locations to take photos. When getting out of the car when the wind is strong, hold the door tightly.
I will regard Day 6 as the transition day from Altay to Tianshan. Don’t write about the day as if you were just rushing. The mountains, grassy slopes, cloud shadows and road changes along the way are all very interesting. It’s just that the bus ride takes a long time, so you need to allow time for rest during the trip, and don’t make your arrival time too late in the evening.
If you live in Nalati, you can eat mutton soup, noodles, hand-made rice, and barbecue at night. There are relatively many accommodation options around Nalati, which is suitable for rest. If you stay in Bayinbuluke, the temperature will be lower at night, so you should check the heating, hot water and hygiene reviews in advance. The temperature difference between morning and evening is obvious in the grassland area, so do not put thick coats on the bottom of the box.

Day 7: Bayinbuluke Scenic Area, focusing on Swan Lake and Nine Winds and Eighteen Bends
The focus of day 7 is Bayinbuluke. This place is completely different from Kanas and Hemu. Kanas is the lake and forest, Hemu is the wooden houses and villages, and Bayinbuluk is the open grassland, river bends, wetlands and distant mountains. It’s more suitable for watching slowly, not for walking in a hurry.
Bayinbuluke Scenic Area is large, and you usually need to take scenic transportation to enter. What’s really worth spending time on is Swan Lake and Nine Winds and Eighteen Bends. Swan Lake is suitable for watching wetlands and water birds, and Nine Winds and Eighteen Bends is suitable for watching grassland rivers and sunsets. When the weather is good, the light falling on the river in the evening will be very layered.
| time period | Arrangement | Details |
|---|---|---|
| morning | Depart from accommodation | If you live in Nalati, you should leave early for Bayinbuluke |
| noon | Go to Bayinbuluke Town or near the scenic spot | Eat simply and don’t eat for too long |
| Afternoon | Enter Bayinbuluke Scenic Area | See the Swan Lake first, then go to the Nine Turns and Eighteen Bends |
| Evening | Watching the sunset with nine twists and turns | This is the highlight of the day. You must bring a jacket. |
| Evening | Return to Bayinbuluke Town for accommodation | Eat a hot meal and go to bed early |
Bayinbulak is windy and the temperature difference is also obvious. It may feel hot under the sun during the day and cold in the evening when the sun sets. I would bring a thick coat, hat, sunglasses, and scarf. You have to stand for a while to take pictures of the sunset. You don’t have to get off the car and watch for five minutes and then leave. Failure to prepare the right clothes will greatly affect the experience.
Don’t spend all your time taking pictures in the scenic area. You can walk a section of the plank road around Swan Lake to see the wetlands, water surface and grassland in the distance. You need to arrive at the viewing position ahead of time for the Nine Winds and Eighteen Bends. Don’t wait for the sun to go down before passing by. There will be more people during the peak season, so if you arrive earlier, you will have a more relaxed location and mentality.
When I watch Bayinbulak, I focus on the evening. The grassland is very open during the day, but the real beauty of the nine twists and turns is after the sun slowly sets. The light changes quickly during that time, so it’s best to arrive in advance and don’t delay on the road.
The catering in Bayinbuluke Town mainly focuses on beef and mutton, noodles, soup and rice, and pilaf. In the evening I will choose hot soup or noodles, simple but comfortable. It is cold at night in the grassland area, so it is not recommended to eat too many cold drinks. The accommodation conditions should not be based on big city standards. The key points are hot water, heating, and clean bedding.
- Bayinbuluke has a large temperature difference between morning and evening, so you must bring a thick coat with you.
- Watching the sunset with nine twists and turns, it is more stable to arrive at the viewing point in advance.
- The transportation time to scenic spots must be included in the total itinerary. Do not treat the entrance to the scenic spot as just a few minutes.
- Grasslands have strong UV rays, so you need to protect yourself from the sun during the day.
- Have a hot meal in the evening and have to take a long trip back to Urumqi the next day.

Day 8: Bayinbuluk returns to Urumqi and ends the trip in the evening
The 8th day is the return day and the journey is relatively long. I won’t schedule any more highlights on this day. After breakfast in the morning, we set off and rest in the middle of the journey according to the status of the driver and fellow travelers. On a long journey back to Xinjiang, I am most afraid of being too tight on time. If you have to take a flight that day, I suggest you wait until the flight is very late, or just stay another night in Urumqi.
Returning from Bayinbuluk to Urumqi, you will pass through mountains, grasslands, highways and the edge of the city. The scenery will also change, but the focus of this day is not to take pictures, but to come back safely and comfortably. You should prepare water, paper towels, wet wipes, charging cables and a small amount of food in the car, as well as a garbage bag. A clean car will make people feel much more comfortable.
| time period | Arrangement |
|---|---|
| morning | Departure from Bayinbuluke |
| morning | Take a break and stretch your legs and feet |
| noon | Simple lunch |
| Afternoon | Continue to return to Urumqi |
| Evening | Arrive in Urumqi, check in or return |
I will have a simple lunch on the return trip. Noodles, rice soup, and rice bowls are all fine. Don’t eat for too long, and don’t overeat. It is easy to feel sleepy on a long car, and it will be more obvious if you eat too much oil. You can prepare some fruits. Apples, oranges, and bananas are all suitable for storage in the car.
After returning to Urumqi, if you have enough time, you can arrange a finishing dinner. Pepper chicken, rice pilaf, noodles, barbecue, and yogurt are all available. After walking for 8 days, I have actually eaten a lot of meat. I can add a vegetable dish or soup to the last meal to make it more comfortable.
I will regard the 8th day as a day to “return to the city steadily” and will not add new attractions. We have already seen Kanas, Hemu and Bayinbuluk before, so leaving time for travel and rest on the last day will make the whole trip more complete.
8-day food plan: What to eat every day to make it more comfortable
Xinjiang delicacies are generally large in portions, so ordering should be based on the number of people. Don’t order too many dishes according to the mainland custom of small portions for two people. For four or more people, you can try a few more dishes. During long-distance travel, I pay more attention to eating comfortably, and I don’t pursue big dishes at every meal.
| Location | Recommended way to eat | My suggestion |
|---|---|---|
| Urumqi | Noodles, pilaf, barbecue, yogurt | Don’t eat too much on the first night |
| Burqin | Grilled fish, barbecue, kvass | Ask the weight and price before ordering fish |
| Kanas | Soup rice, noodles, stir-fried rice | Just eat enough in the scenic area |
| Hemu | Local hotpot, hand-picked rice, rice soup | It’s more comfortable to eat hot food at night |
| Karamay/Kuitun | Large plate chicken, pepper and sesame chicken, noodles | Suitable for a good meal during a break |
| Nalati/Bayinbuluk | Mutton soup, rice pilaf, noodles | The grassland is cold at night, so drink less ice drinks |
| Return to Urumqi | Pilaf, barbecue, yogurt | You can have a refreshing meal at the end |
Personally, I don’t think you need to eat big fish and meat every day for 8 days. The meat in Xinjiang is indeed delicious, but you have to take care of your stomach and intestines as you have to travel long distances. Try to have a hot breakfast, a quick lunch, and a more formal dinner. This is the most comfortable pace.
Accommodation arrangements: money should be spent on location and quality of rest
Accommodation on this line varies greatly. Cities such as Urumqi, Karamay, and Kuitun have many accommodation options and stable conditions; accommodation in scenic spots or grasslands such as Kanas, Hemu, and Bayinbuluk vary in price, hot water, sound insulation, and room size. Don’t just look at pictures when booking a room, recent reviews are more important.
| Number of nights | Accommodation | Select key points |
|---|---|---|
| Night 1 | Urumqi | Convenient transportation, easy to set off the next day |
| Night 2 | Burqin | Near the main street, convenient for eating and supplies |
| Night 3 | Kanas or Jiadengyu | Depends on the budget. It is convenient but expensive in the scenic area. |
| Night 4 | Hemu Village | Prioritize the village and confirm the hot water and location |
| Night 5 | Karamay or Kuitun | Regular hotel, suitable for rest |
| Night 6 | Nalati or Bayinbuluk | Select according to the day’s journey |
| Night 7 | Bayinbuluke | It’s more convenient to live in the town after watching the sunset |
| Night 8 | Urumqi or return | It would be more stable to stay for one night if you don’t have a flight to catch. |
My budget allocation idea is: city accommodation does not need to be too expensive, just clean and convenient; the location of accommodation in Hemu and Bayinbuluke is more important; Kanas chooses scenic spots or Jiadengyu according to the budget. Don’t choose a location too far away just to save some accommodation fees, as it will take more time and energy to make up for it later.
Cost reference: Where to spend the 8 days mainly
The cost of this 8-day line is mainly spent on transportation, accommodation, tickets to scenic spots, shuttle buses, and meals. Depending on the mode of transportation, the difference will be huge. For self-driving, you need to consider car rental, fuel costs, tolls, and parking; for renting a car, it depends on the car model, season, and number of people; if you connect it by plane or train, the route will be easier, but the total cost will also change.
| project | Cost characteristics | My opinion |
|---|---|---|
| Transportation | accounts for the highest proportion | It is more suitable for 4 people to travel together, but the cost of 2 people will be high |
| Accommodation | High fluctuations in peak season | Hemu, Kanas and Bayinbuluk should be watched early |
| Catering | Frugality depends on people | Normal eating costs about 100 to 180 yuan per person per day |
| Scenic area transportation | Most scenic spots require | Read the announcement of the day in advance and purchase according to actual situation |
| Supply | Not a big deal | Fruits, water, paper towels, and snacks will be used on the road |
This line is not suitable for budgeting based on low prices only. Xinjiang is a long way to go, and if you save too much on transportation and accommodation, your experience will be significantly affected. My suggestion is to choose safe transportation, choose accommodation in a suitable location, order meals according to the number of people, and leave enough time for scenic spots.
Suitable for crowds and travel time
This 8-day line is suitable for people with good physical strength, able to endure a long drive, and who want to see the mountains, lakes and grasslands of Northern Xinjiang at once. You can go to Xinjiang for the first time, but you have to accept in advance that it is not an easy and slow trip. Elderly people, children, and people prone to motion sickness are not recommended to schedule the route too tightly. You can put Bayinbuluke on another Yili route separately.
In terms of travel time, I prefer mid-June to mid-September. From June to July, the grassland is in good condition, and the flowers and green spaces are more obvious; in August, there are many tourists, and accommodation prices are usually higher; in mid-September, Kanas and Hemu begin to show autumn colors, but Bayinbuluk will get colder sooner or later. If you still want to walk on grasslands and mountain roads after October, you should check the weather and road conditions in advance.
The core of this route is not to include all places in Xinjiang, but to look at the three key points of Kanas, Hemu and Bayinbuluk more completely. In the first half, we saw the mountains, lakes and wooden houses in Altay, and in the second half, we watched the Tianshan grasslands and river sunsets. Although the eight days were compact, they were rich in content.
