Yunnan Travel FAQ | Must-Read Before Your First Trip to Yunnan

The altitude of Dali and Lijiang is about 2000-2400 meters, which usually poses no problem for the human body. However, if you plan to climb Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (the highest cableway point is 4506 meters) or visit Shangri-La (3300 meters), be sure to prepare portable oxygen cylinders in advance.

Plateau ultraviolet rays are extremely strong; bringing SPF50+ sunscreen and sunglasses is a must. The temperature difference between morning and evening locally often reaches as high as 10-15℃. Even when traveling in summer, you must bring a windbreaker or a light down jacket to protect against the cold.

Tourist attractions in Yunnan are extremely scattered. For travel between cities (such as Kunming to Dali), it is recommended to prioritize high-speed rail (approx. 2 hours direct), which is safe, time-saving, and avoids the exhaustion of long-distance bus travel.

Will I Get Altitude Sickness in Yunnan?

Conventional Yunnan travel routes (such as Kunming and Dali) have altitudes between 1900-2000 meters, and more than 95% of tourists experience no altitude sickness. High-altitude areas are mainly in Shangri-La (3300 meters) and Jade Dragon Snow Mountain (max 4506 meters), where oxygen content drops to 60%-70% of that at sea level. When going up the snow mountain, it is suggested to buy 1000ml portable oxygen cylinders at pharmacies in Lijiang city for 15-20 yuan in advance; 1-2 bottles per person is sufficient. Prices at the scenic spot are usually marked above 60 yuan. If you encounter severe headaches or vomiting, descend immediately.

Altitude and Oxygen Content of Attractions

The standard atmospheric pressure at sea level is approximately 101.3kPa, and the volume percentage of oxygen in the air is constant at 20.9%. The urban area of Jinghong City in Xishuangbanna has an altitude of only 550 meters, with atmospheric pressure maintained at around 95kPa. The oxygen intake per breath for tourists here reaches 94% to 96% of that in plain areas. The resting heart rate of tourists landing in Banna is identical to when they are in Beijing, Shanghai, or Guangzhou, typically between 70 to 80 beats per minute.

Driving 500 kilometers north along the Kunming-Mohan Expressway brings you to Kunming City, where the terrain rises from the basin to the heart of the Yunnan-Guizhou Plateau. The runway altitude of Changshui International Airport reaches 2100 meters, and the average urban elevation is 1891 meters. The thinness of the local air begins to manifest, with oxygen partial pressure dropping to 82% of sea level. Walking briskly for 20 minutes to feed seagulls on the Dianchi Dam, an out-of-town tourist’s breathing rate will rise slightly from the usual 14 breaths/min to 16 breaths/min.

Taking a bullet train west for 2 hours leads to Dali Station, where the Erhai Lake surface altitude is measured at 1972 meters. Dali Old Town at the foot of Cangshan Mountain is slightly higher, with ground elevation fluctuating around 2050 meters. The oxygen content in the Dali area is stable in the 80% range. Cycling 10 kilometers on the ecological corridor, the oxygen consumed by thigh muscles is about 5% more than the same intensity of exercise in the plains; most people will only feel slight soreness.

Low-Medium Altitude Zone Measured Landmark Ground Altitude Data Relative Oxygen Content Measured Air Pressure
Xishuangbanna Gaozhuang Xishuangjing 530 meters 95.5% Approx. 95.2 kPa
Kunming City Green Lake Park 1895 meters 81.8% Approx. 80.6 kPa
Dali Prefecture Three Pagodas of Chongsheng Temple 2080 meters 79.5% Approx. 78.8 kPa
  • Below 1500 meters: Basal metabolic rate remains normal, alveolar gas exchange rate 100%
  • 1800-2000 meters: Oxygen consumption increases slightly, water requirement increases by 300 ml per day compared to plains
  • 2000-2500 meters: Retina sensitive to low oxygen, night vision declines slightly by 3%

As the bus continues 180 kilometers toward northwest Yunnan, the altitude at Lijiang Sanyi Airport rises to 2240 meters. The elevation of the flagstone roads at Sifang Street in Dayan Old Town is approximately 2416 meters, and the oxygen content drops to 76%. The decrease in oxygen carrying capacity leads to a reduction in deep sleep duration at night by 15% to 20%. During the first night in Lijiang Old Town, the light sleep cycle will be lengthened, and some people will take 30 to 45 minutes longer to fall asleep than usual.

Driving from Lijiang over the Haba Pass at an altitude of 3200 meters to Dukezong Old Town in Shangri-La City, the altimeter reads 3300 meters. The oxygen partial pressure here is only 105mmHg, and the oxygen content falls sharply to 68%. When climbing 100 stone steps in Guishan Park to push the prayer wheel, the heart rate will rapidly soar to over 115 beats per minute within 2 minutes.

High Altitude Zone Measured Landmark Ground Altitude Data Relative Oxygen Content Night Ambient Temperature
Lijiang City Sifang Street, Dayan Old Town 2416 meters 76.2% Often as low as 12℃ in summer
Shangri-La Pudacuo National Park 3580 meters 65.4% Often approaches 0℃ in autumn
Lugu Lake Lige Peninsula Lookout 2690 meters 73.5% Mostly below 10℃ year-round

The altitude of the Shudu Lake boardwalk in Pudacuo National Park reaches 3580 meters, nearly 300 meters higher than the Shangri-La urban area. The boardwalk is 3.3 kilometers long, and walking it one way usually takes 1.5 hours. Walking continuously in cold air with only 65% of sea-level oxygen content, the human body loses as much as 250 kcal of heat per hour. Hypothermia on the body surface easily occurs within 40 minutes without a windbreaker.

The Glacier Park Grand Cableway of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain is the limit test point for conventional sightseeing. The lower cableway station is at 3356 meters, reaching the observation platform at 4506 meters after a 15-minute ride. The sudden 1150-meter rise brings a drastic change in pressure, with atmospheric pressure plummeting to 57kPa. The moment tourists step out of the cabin, the absolute value of oxygen inhaled per breath is only 55% of that in plain areas, and external oxygen cylinders must be used to maintain blood oxygen saturation.

Climbing from the 4506-meter wooden boardwalk to the highest stone tablet at 4680 meters, there are about 1000 steps over a vertical distance of just 174 meters. For every 20 steps climbed, the hamstring muscles need to consume about 300 ml of pure oxygen. At this time, the heart can only compensate for the oxygen supply gap by raising the pumping frequency to 130 beats per minute; the stay should not exceed 1.5 hours.

Ultra-High Altitude Zone Measured Landmark Ground Altitude Data Relative Oxygen Content Safe Stay Time
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Highest Tablet, Glacier Park 4680 meters 53.8% Suggested not to exceed 1.5 hours
Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Maoniuping Cableway Station 3800 meters 62.7% Suggested not to exceed 2.5 hours
Meili Snow Mountain Feilai Temple Lookout 3400 meters 67.1% Depends on overnight sleep quality
  • 3000-3500 meters: Resting heart rate generally increases by 10-15 beats/min; reduce running
  • 3500-4000 meters: Digestive enzyme secretion decreases by 20%; control single meal intake to 70% full
  • Above 4000 meters: Supplement oxygen every 15 minutes of activity; must descend if blood oxygen is below 75%

The Feilai Temple observation deck at the foot of Meili Snow Mountain is an important transit point on the Yunnan-Tibet line, with an altitude at the warning line of 3400 meters. Waiting here for the 6:40 AM “Golden Mountain under Sun” wonder, the relative humidity of the morning air is usually below 30%. Cold, dry air inhaled into the respiratory tract takes away nearly 40% of the moisture from the tracheal mucosa. Standing in the wind for 30 minutes, the constriction of microvessels in the pharyngeal wall can easily trigger a dry cough.

Within the same Jade Dragon Snow Mountain scenic area, the altitude of Spruce Meadow is only 3240 meters, with an oxygen content of 69%, 14 percentage points higher than Glacier Park. The lake surface altitude of Blue Moon Valley drops further to about 2800 meters, with oxygen content rebounding to 72%. Strolling 2 kilometers along the lake in Blue Moon Valley, the blood oxygen saturation of most plain tourists can naturally recover and stabilize at over 92% without extra oxygen.

Who is Prone to Discomfort

People who perform high-intensity aerobic exercise more than 3 times a week in plain areas are about 15% more likely to experience headaches in areas above 3000 meters than those who lack exercise. The resting basal metabolic oxygen consumption of muscle cells is about 3 times higher than that of fat cells. When the altitude of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain rises to 4500 meters and the oxygen content drops to 55% of sea level, large muscle groups cannot obtain the same volume of oxygen as in the plains, and the oxygen supply gap widens instantly.

Children also belong to the group with vigorous basal metabolism; the resting heart rate of children aged 5 to 12 is typically 80 to 100 beats per minute. At an altitude of 3300 meters in Shangri-La, a child’s heart rate will compensatorily rise to over 110 beats to pump more blood oxygen. A fast heartbeat can easily cause them to experience irritability or crying earlier.

In contrast, elderly people over 60 have a slower metabolism and are relatively less likely to have violent reactions when first arriving at high altitudes. The cardiopulmonary function adjustment for people over 65 usually takes 24 to 48 hours; their altitude sickness often has a strong lag, easily leading to insomnia or chest tightness only on the second night after arriving in Lijiang.

  • Males aged 20-35 (BMI > 25): Major oxygen consumers, prone to headaches after a single exercise
  • Toddlers under 5: Unable to express symptoms accurately; parents should carry a finger-clip pulse oximeter
  • Seniors aged 60-75: Slow compensatory mechanisms; discomfort reactions have a lag of more than 12 hours
  • Pregnant women: Self-blood volume increases by about 40%; plateau sightseeing easily triggers local hypoxia in the mother

Tourists diagnosed with upper respiratory infections within 7 days of departure will have a 20% to 30% decrease in basic ventilation due to edema of the nasal and tracheal mucosa. In Lijiang, where the air pressure is only 70% of the plain, even slight respiratory ventilation obstruction will multiply the body’s sense of hypoxia.

Carrying a cold virus into high altitudes changes the osmotic pressure of pulmonary capillaries, making the probability of inducing high-altitude pulmonary edema nearly 50 times higher than that of perfectly healthy people. Women with mild anemia (hemoglobin below 110g/L) have a low inherent oxygen-carrying capacity in their blood; they may yawn frequently or be in a lethargic state upon reaching Dali (2000 meters).

Patients with hypertension facing low-pressure and low-oxygen environments will have generalized peripheral vasoconstriction due to sympathetic nervous system excitement. For every 1000 meters increase in altitude, a person’s resting systolic blood pressure (high pressure) generally rises by 5 to 10 mmHg. If a patient’s blood pressure is usually controlled at the edge of 140/90 mmHg, it can easily exceed 160 mmHg in a short time during the cableway ascent of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain.

  • Severe cold with fever: Total body oxygen consumption increases sharply, greatly increasing the risk of pulmonary complications
  • Asthma and COPD: Bronchial smooth muscle constricts easily, respiratory ventilation is significantly limited
  • Moderate anemia: Insufficient hemoglobin quantity leads to a decrease in absolute arterial blood oxygen carrying capacity
  • Uncontrolled hypertension: Violent vasoconstriction can trigger cerebral hypoxia above 3000 meters
  • Sleep Apnea Syndrome: Blood oxygen saturation easily drops below 80% when lying in bed at night

The body fat percentage also significantly affects the comfort of plateau sightseeing. For obese people with a BMI over 28, excess fat accumulation in the neck slightly compresses the airway when lying flat. In plain areas, there may be only simple snoring, but on low-oxygen nights in Shangri-La hotels, airway resistance will cause arterial blood oxygen saturation to drop rapidly below 85%, leading to frequent waking.

People with thick visceral fat usually need to mobilize about 25% of the body’s total blood supply to digest food. If you eat a high-calorie yak meat hot pot at an altitude of 3300 meters, a large amount of blood concentrates in the digestive system, and the blood supply to the brain decreases by 10% to 15%, easily causing dizziness within 1 hour after the meal.

During menstruation, women’s estrogen levels are at the bottom of the cycle, accompanied by a normal blood loss of 50 to 80 ml. This leads to a transient decrease in stored iron; when climbing the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain wooden boardwalk, the heart rate is more likely to soar above 130 beats per minute, and leg muscles will quickly become sour and weak.

For adult males with a lung capacity greater than 5000 ml, the absolute value of oxygen needed for a single normal breath is much larger than for average people. In 3300-meter areas like Shangri-La, the oxygen partial pressure drops to 105mmHg, much lower than the 159mmHg at sea level. To maintain basic oxygen supply, those with large lung capacities will be forced to raise their breathing rate from the usual 14 breaths/min to over 20.

  • BMI > 28: Basal blood oxygen at night drops very easily; high probability of sleep hypoxia
  • Body fat < 10%: Thin subcutaneous fat means poor warmth retention; hypothermia can easily aggravate altitude sickness
  • Menstruating women: Accompanied by transient blood volume reduction, prone to fatigue and dizziness during hiking
  • Long-term smokers: Low alveolar gas exchange efficiency; require a longer adaptation period than usual

For tourists who have smoked for a long time, the carbon monoxide concentration in the blood is higher than normal, occupying some hemoglobin binding sites for a long time. People who smoke more than 10 cigarettes a day in areas above 2500 meters have an effective blood oxygen saturation typically 2% to 3% lower than non-smokers of the same age. This group needs 1 to 2 extra days to prompt the bone marrow to generate more red blood cells to compensate for the hypoxia gap.

How to Cope

When the plane lands at Lijiang Sanyi Airport, the altitude instantly rises from the plains to 2240 meters, and the oxygen content drops to 76% of sea level. In the first 6 hours after disembarking, the heart rate will typically increase by 10 to 15 beats/minute compensatorily. When carrying luggage or boarding a bus, the walking speed should be controlled at half of the usual pace to give the heart enough time to adjust its pumping rhythm.

During the first night after arriving at the hotel, the body is in the peak period of oxygen consumption, and capillaries expand rapidly. Showers with water temperature exceeding 40℃ accelerate body surface blood circulation, leading to a 15% to 20% instant reduction in blood flowing back to the brain. Forcing yourself to wash your hair and take a bath can easily trigger migraines that night; simply wiping your face, hands, and feet with warm water is enough.

Dry plateau winds will take away a lot of moisture from the respiratory tract; the relative humidity in Lijiang is year-round less than 40%. You must force yourself to drink 1500 to 2000 ml of warm water daily, in 6 to 8 small sips. Water can effectively improve blood viscosity and help red blood cells transport free oxygen more smoothly through microvessels.

  • First 6 hours after landing: Halve walking speed; avoid lifting weights over 10 kg
  • Before bedtime: Close windows and doors to prevent wind; maintain room temperature at 18-22℃
  • First night’s washing: Keep the whole process within 5 minutes; no hair washing or overheated baths
  • Water replenishment method: Drink 200 ml of warm water every 2 hours
  • Dietary distribution: Focus on being 70% full; carbohydrate intake accounts for 60% of the total

Traveling from Lijiang to Shangri-La by bus takes 3.5 hours over the 180-kilometer National Highway 214. The bus cabin is a confined space; when the vehicle climbs to the Haba Snow Mountain lookout at an altitude of 3200 meters, the oxygen partial pressure inside the car will drop to around 108mmHg. Do not eat foods that are too sweet or greasy before boarding to prevent the superposition of motion sickness and hypoxia.

When passing through Tiger Leaping Gorge or stopping for photos, outdoor wind speeds often reach levels 5 to 6, and the perceived temperature will drop 8 to 10℃ lower than inside the bus. When the brain is stimulated by cold wind, cerebral blood vessels will contract rapidly. Before getting off the bus, you must zip up your windbreaker and put on a windproof hat to prevent rapid heat loss from the head within 3 minutes, which can trigger acute dizziness.

Taking the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Glacier Grand Cableway is the most extreme 15-minute altitude span in the entire Yunnan itinerary. The cable car will lift people from the lower station at 3356 meters to the upper station at 4506 meters at a maximum speed of 6 meters/second. During this vertical ascent of 1150 meters, atmospheric pressure will drop by approximately 120hPa.

  • During the bus ride: Slightly open one side window by a 3 cm gap for ventilation
  • Getting off at passes: The head must be covered with a windproof hat or a thick scarf
  • While queuing for the cableway: Take out the oxygen cylinder, remove the cap, and be ready
  • Inside the cabin: Take 2 deep breaths for every 300 meters of ascent
  • Stepping out of the station: Stand still for 1 minute to adapt to pressure changes

Stepping out of the 4506-meter upper station, the oxygen content is only 55% of sea level, and the 4680-meter highest observation deck is still 174 vertical meters of wooden boardwalk away. When climbing steps, it is a normal physiological phenomenon for the heart rate to exceed 120 beats per minute. Adopt a “walk 10 steps, stop 10 seconds” rhythm to allow muscles time to discharge accumulated lactic acid.

The correct way to use a portable oxygen cylinder is not to keep it in your mouth constantly. When you press the valve and hear the “hiss” sound, take a deep breath for 2 to 3 seconds in coordination with the pressing frequency, then hold your breath for 1 second to let oxygen fully exchange in the alveoli. A 1000 ml bottle of oxygen can provide about 60 to 80 effective inhalations based on 1-second presses.

The tour time should be strictly controlled within 1.5 to 2 hours; the longer you stay, the faster the physical energy drains exponentially. If after inhaling oxygen you still experience persistent projectile vomiting, purple lips, and icy fingers/toes, it means blood oxygen saturation has dropped below 75%. Stop climbing and ask staff for help to take the cableway down to 3300 meters; symptoms will naturally subside within 40 minutes.

  • Rhythm on boardwalk: Rest for 15 seconds after every 10 steps completed
  • Oxygen frequency control: Press nozzle for 2 seconds while inhaling deeply; hold breath for 1 second before exhaling
  • Heart rate monitoring standard: If it exceeds 110 beats/min at rest, rest immediately
  • Energy replenishment timing: Eat a piece of chocolate or a candy every half hour
  • Emergency descent indicator: Headaches and vomiting show no sign of relief after 3 minutes of oxygen inhalation

Returning from the snow mountain to Lijiang city at 2400 meters, the body will enter a “drunk oxygen” state, which is a reverse adjustment of the body re-obtaining sufficient oxygen after experiencing low oxygen. It manifests as obvious fatigue and sleepiness, usually requiring 8 to 12 hours of stable sleep to recover. Avoid drinking high-proof spirits for dinner to allow the liver to prioritize metabolizing the fatigue substances accumulated during the day.

What is the Weather Like in Yunnan?

Yunnan’s weather is influenced by terrain and altitude. The altitude difference across the province exceeds 6000 meters; for every 100 meters increase in altitude, the temperature drops by about 0.6℃. The year is divided into dry and wet seasons: 5-10 months account for 85% of rainfall, while November to April next year is the dry season with over 80% sunny days. The daily temperature difference in major destinations like Dali, Lijiang, and Shangri-La is stable between 10℃ and 15℃, and the ultraviolet index (UVI) remains at a strong level of 8-11 year-round.

Temperature Distribution

Yunnan spans from 21°8′ to 29°15′ north latitude, with a north-south distance of 900 kilometers. Its terrain covers everything from the Red River Valley at an altitude of 76.4 meters to the Kawagarbo Peak at 6740 meters. In this 394,000 square kilometer land, the massive 6663.6-meter altitude difference dictates temperature distribution.

The physical properties of the atmospheric troposphere set a strict standard: For every 100 meters increase in altitude, ambient temperature drops by approximately 0.6℃. Based on geographic steps, tourist destinations in Yunnan are divided into four distinct temperature zones.

Regional Benchmark Measured Altitude January Daily Avg. Range July Daily Avg. Range Basic Clothing Pieces
Jinghong City 553 meters 12℃ – 25℃ 23℃ – 33℃ 150g Short Sleeve
Kunming City 1891 meters 2℃ – 15℃ 16℃ – 24℃ Standard Long Sleeve T-shirt
Lijiang Old Town 2416 meters 0℃ – 14℃ 14℃ – 23℃ 250g Fleece Jacket
Shangri-La 3280 meters -10℃ – 5℃ 10℃ – 19℃ 200g Down Jacket

Every time an altitude step is crossed, the perceived temperature will undergo a drastic fluctuation of at least 5℃ to 8℃; the proportion of clothing in the suitcase must be adjusted accordingly.

Located at the southernmost tip, Xishuangbanna is crossed by the Tropic of Cancer and is constantly controlled by the tropical monsoon. There are more than 280 days a year with daily maximum temperatures exceeding 25℃. Even at noon in mid-January, outdoor temperatures remain stable between 22℃ and 24℃.

  • Sunshine and Absorption: Over 2100 hours of sunshine annually; the tropical rainforest canopy absorbs more than 90% of solar radiation.
  • Ground Heat: Lacking physical conditions for cold air accumulation, asphalt road surfaces can reach over 50℃ in summer.
  • Wearing Data: Pack 150g pure cotton short sleeves and single-layer quick-drying trousers; no need to pack down or thermal clothing.

Traveling 400 kilometers north along the Kunming-Mohan Expressway, the road network altitude rapidly rises above 1800 meters, entering the Central Yunnan Basin. The 300 square kilometer water body of Dianchi Lake exerts a huge specific heat capacity advantage, anchoring Kunming’s July average temperature at 19.8℃.

Kunming in winter is controlled by a single warm air mass, with over 80% sunny days and daytime temperatures fluctuating around 15℃. When northern cold waves move south, they are physically blocked by the Wumeng Mountains (average 2500m), making it very difficult for cold air to invade, creating the local appearance of mild seasons year-round.

Continuing northwest for 300 kilometers to Dali and Lijiang, the geographic elevation steps into the 2000 to 2500-meter range. Being at the southeastern edge of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, the atmospheric layer thickness here is reduced by about 20% compared to sea level, and long-wave ground radiation dissipates very quickly at night.

  • Frost Phenomenon: In Lijiang from December to February next year, night temperatures regularly drop below 0℃; flagstone roads in the old town often have black ice.
  • Noon Warming: Between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM, short-wave solar radiation penetrates the thin atmosphere, quickly heating the air on sun-facing sides to 12℃ to 14℃.
  • Indoor Cold Protection: More than 80% of guesthouses in the old town turn on electric blankets in winter; setting the air conditioner to 22℃ can prevent room temperatures from being too low at night.

Crossing the Jinsha River into Diqing Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, the highway altitude fully breaks through the 3000-meter warning line. The annual average temperature in Shangri-La urban area is only 5.5℃, and for as long as 150 days a year, the daily minimum temperature is in the negative range.

Visiting Shangri-La in the peak of July, a 250g fleece jacket is still necessary; night temperatures hover around 10℃ year-round. Going to Pudacuo National Park at an altitude of 3400 meters, dense cold-temperate coniferous forests block sunlight, making the perceived temperature in the forest 2℃ to 3℃ lower than in the city.

Extreme low temperatures in Shangri-La in January can reach below -15℃, with outdoor snow accumulation intensifying ground cooling at night. Going to Dukezong Old Town or Songzanlin Monastery, one must wear a white goose down jacket with a fill weight of over 200g and wear windproof warm gloves.

The deep-cut gorge topography of the Hengduan Mountains in northwest Yunnan creates exaggerated local microclimates. Temperatures at the bottom of the Nujiang Grand Canyon are year-round 15℃ to 20℃ higher than on the 3000-meter ridges on either side, forming a vertical disparity where bananas are grown at the valley floor while glaciers cover the peaks.

Taking the cableway from Maoniuping at 3356 meters to Glacier Park at 4506 meters on Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, the 1150-meter vertical climb takes only 15 minutes. The atmospheric temperature outside the cable car cabin drops by nearly 7℃ in 15 minutes, requiring cardiopulmonary functions to adjust rapidly.

In the snow mountain cableway queuing area where temperatures are below 5℃, the body’s rate of oxygen consumption to produce heat speeds up. Buying portable oxygen cylinders in Lijiang city (altitude 2400m) at a unit price of 20 to 30 yuan and inhaling oxygen while queuing helps maintain blood oxygen saturation above 90%.

Clothing Plan

Day-night temperature differences in most high-altitude tourist cities in Yunnan maintain a range of 10℃ to 15℃ year-round. Taking Lijiang at 2400 meters as an example, early morning temperatures at 7:00 AM in mid-November often approach 2℃, then rise rapidly to over 18℃ by 2:00 PM when the sun is strong.

The cooling rate after sunset is extremely fast. Within the hour between 6:30 PM and 7:30 PM, the temperature drop can reach 6℃ to 8℃. Body surface capillaries expand to dissipate heat during the day, making the body very prone to local hypothermia or colds when encountering suddenly dropped cold air.

Perceived temperatures are significantly affected by wind speed when cycling around Erhai Lake or taking the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain cableway. Gusts of level 4 to 5 are common by Erhai Lake, making the perceived temperature 3℃ to 5℃ lower than the weather forecast reading. At the Glacier Park on the snow mountain at 4506 meters, the temperature is only 5℃ at noon in August.

  • Inner layer: 150g-200g/㎡ polyester quick-dry T-shirt; sweat drainage is higher than cotton.
  • Middle layer: 250g fleece jacket or a thin knit sweater with more than 50% wool content.
  • Outer layer: Single-layer windbreaker with windproof coating, or a light down jacket with around 80g fill weight.
  • Bottoms: Durable elastic trousers weighing around 300g; avoid chiffon materials that are prone to wind penetration.

To deal with the alternation of daytime warming and nighttime cooling, the three-layer clothing method is the most efficient solution. Put all three layers on when leaving in the morning, then take off the outer windbreaker at 10:00 AM when the temperature reaches 15℃, storing it in a 20L capacity backpack.

Between 1:00 PM and 3:00 PM is the hottest time of the day. When the temperature exceeds 20℃, just keep the inner short or long-sleeved quick-dry shirt. After 5:00 PM, when sunlight weakens and UV radiation drops, reverse the order of undressing by putting the middle and outer layers back on sequentially.

Dali Old Town and Sifang Street in Lijiang mostly have flagstone roads; long walks put great pressure on the arches of the feet. A pair of sports shoes with an EVA foam midsole, a sole thickness of 3-5 cm, and a single weight of no more than 300g can provide basic cushioning.

  • Socks: Mid-tube socks with over 70% cotton content; thickness should be enough to wrap the ankles.
  • Spare shoes: Avoid carrying heavy Martin boots or high heels weighing over 800g.
  • Hat: A windproof sun hat with a brim wider than 8 cm and a wind rope.
  • Neck gaiter: A 50 cm long high-count cotton magic bandana to block wind and cold in the morning and evening.

Taking the Fuxing bullet train from Kunming to Xishuangbanna, within the 3.5-hour journey, the outside environment transitions from a temperate zone at 1890 meters altitude to a tropical zone at 500 meters altitude.

The air conditioning in the bullet train cabin is set to a constant 22℃ to 24℃. The moment you step out of the cabin at Xishuangbanna Station, the outdoor 32℃ temperature and 70% relative humidity will cause sweat volume to surge. Changing into shorts in the restroom beforehand can reduce moisture loss.

The bus ride to Shangri-La takes 4 hours, passing through the Baima Snow Mountain Pass at 3500 meters altitude. The bus is sealed and full of 35 passengers, with no air circulation causing the surface temperature to rise to 26℃, while there may be snowfall of -2℃ outside the window.

The 15-minute break getting off at a lookout mid-journey is a peak time for catching colds. The speed of hot and cold convection wind at the moment the door opens can reach 5 meters per second. 2 minutes before getting off, you must zip up your windbreaker and put on a windproof hat inside the car, ensuring the head and neck are not fully exposed to the air.

  • Suitcase size: Bring a 24-inch trolley case for solo travel, with a capacity of about 65 liters.
  • Clothing proportion: Warm coats and trousers should occupy only 50% of the suitcase space.
  • Categorized storage: Use 3-5 vacuum compression bags with suction valves to pack down jackets.
  • Backpack: Keep the weight within 3 kg and place the coat needed for the day inside.

For tourists with children, the sweat volume of children with higher basal metabolic rates is 1.5 times that of adults in temperature-variable environments. Placing a pure cotton sweat-absorbent towel on the back and replacing it within 5 minutes of the clothes becoming slightly damp can significantly reduce the probability of low fever caused by heat loss from sweat evaporation.

Senior tourists over 60 have a relatively slow perception of temperature. During the morning and evening periods when the temperature is below 10℃, carry a 500 ml vacuum flask filled with 45℃ to 50℃ warm water to replenish moisture lost due to plateau dryness while maintaining a normal stomach temperature.

Dry and Wet Seasons

The annual average precipitation in Yunnan province is around 1100 mm. Due to the influence of the southwest monsoon from the Indian Ocean, the time distribution of precipitation is extremely uneven. From mid-May to late October is the rainy season, with more than 85% of the annual precipitation concentrated in just 5 months.

After entering June, the average monthly rainy days in Dali and Lijiang reach 15 to 18 days. The rain here is not the drizzling rain of the Jiangnan region, but short-term heavy precipitation brought by fast-moving cumulonimbus clouds.

Showers usually occur between 2:00 PM and 5:00 PM, with the duration of a single rainfall mostly between 30 minutes and 2 hours.

After clouds block the sun, the air temperature will drop suddenly by 5℃ to 8℃ within half an hour after a shower with 10 mm of precipitation.

At this time, the 200g short-sleeved T-shirt originally worn will not be able to maintain the normal body temperature of 36.5℃. Having a single-layer thin windbreaker with a windproof and waterproof index of over 5000mm in your backpack is an effective piece of equipment against sudden temperature drops.

Along National Highway 214 from Shangri-La to Meili Snow Mountain, after 3 consecutive days of precipitation exceeding 50 mm, the probability of roadside rockfalls will multiply.

  • Rain gear choice: A 8-rib black glue sun and rain umbrella with a folded length of less than 25 cm and a wind resistance level of 5.
  • Shoe requirements: Waterproof sports shoes with non-slip patterns of over 3 mm on the sole; avoid flat-soled canvas shoes.
  • Electronic protection: Prepare 2 sealed waterproof bags with a thickness of 0.2 mm to store mobile phones and camera batteries.

Afternoon thunderstorms in Xishuangbanna in July and August are accompanied by strong convective weather, with instantaneous wind speeds reaching 10 meters per second. 20 minutes after the rain stops, ground moisture evaporates rapidly in the 32℃ high temperature.

The relative humidity near the ground will quickly climb to 85% or even 90%. In such a high-humidity and high-temperature environment, human sweat evaporation is hindered, and the perceived temperature will be 2℃ to 3℃ higher than the actual air temperature. Daily water intake should increase to over 2.5 liters.

Entering the dry season from November to April next year, the monsoon alternation makes it impossible for Indian Ocean moisture to cross the Hengduan Mountains. The average monthly rainy days in central and northern Yunnan drop to below 3 days, with sunny, cloudless weather accounting for more than 80%.

In Kunming, Dali, and Lijiang during the dry season, the daytime relative humidity year-round hovers in the extremely low range of 25% to 30%.

When the relative humidity of the air at 2400 meters altitude is below 30%, the rate of moisture loss from the stratum corneum on the human skin surface is 3 times that of coastal plain areas. Exposed skin on the face, hands, and ankles will feel tight on the second day of arrival in Yunnan.

By the third or fourth day, hangnails often appear around the nails, and white dry dander may appear on the front of the calves. Static sparks will be generated on the surface when taking off polyester sweaters or fleece jackets at night due to the dry air.

  • Body moisturizing: Carry 100g of Vaseline or a highly moisturizing body lotion containing ceramides, and apply within 3 minutes after showering every night.
  • Facial care: Use 50 ml of occlusive face cream paired with 2 lip balms containing Vitamin E.
  • Nasal moisturizing: Prepare a bottle of physiological sea salt nasal spray and press/spray twice daily in the morning and evening.

Turning on the air conditioner in a hotel room all night can cause indoor humidity to drop below 15%.

Placing a 300 ml glass of water on the nightstand or hanging a completely wet cotton towel on the back of a chair before sleeping can increase the relative humidity in local areas of the room by about 10%, relieving dry throat pain when waking up in the morning.

The ample sunshine hours and minimal cloud cover in the dry season cause the total solar radiation reaching the ground to reach its peak. In areas of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain above 4000 meters, the reflectivity of winter snow to ultraviolet rays is as high as 80%.

Staying near the snow line for more than 20 minutes, the light intensity borne by the naked retina is extremely high. You must wear polarized sunglasses with a transmittance classification of Category 3, capable of blocking more than 99% of UVB, to prevent snow blindness.

How to Plan the Most Rational Route?

Inter-city commuting distances in Yunnan province are usually over 300 kilometers. Route planning is suggested to use “multi-city entry and exit” flights (such as entering via Kunming and exiting via Lijiang), which can save about 4 hours of backtracking travel and 220 yuan in one-way fares. For first-timers, it is recommended to take the Northwest Yunnan line of “Kunming-Dali-Lijiang-Shangri-La,” which can be connected entirely by high-speed rail. Arrange the itinerary for 6 to 8 days, control daily commuting to attractions within 3 hours, and follow the order of increasing altitude for sightseeing.

Buying “Multi-city Entry and Exit” Air Tickets

Yunnan province currently has 15 civil airports in operation, ranking among the top in the country. Kunming Changshui Airport, as a large hub with a throughput of over 40 million passengers, has nearly a thousand flights taking off and landing daily. Dali, Lijiang, Xishuangbanna, and Shangri-La all have feeder airports connecting to large and medium-sized cities.

Tourists are used to booking round-trip tickets to Kunming and need to return to Kunming from the last stop after the trip ends. Taking Lijiang as the final stop, the straight-line distance from Lijiang Station to Kunming Station is about 500 kilometers. Taking a C-series bullet train takes 3.5 to 4 hours, and a second-class seat costs about 230 yuan.

After reaching Kunming Station or Kunming South Station, city transit to Changshui International Airport is still required. Kunming South Station is 35 kilometers from Changshui Airport; taking Metro Line 6 takes 45 minutes and costs 7 yuan. If taking a ride-hailing car via the airport expressway, it takes 50 minutes without traffic and costs about 100 yuan.

The entire backtracking process, plus arriving at the airport 2 hours early for check-in, will consume at least 6.5 hours of daylight. Based on the high-speed rail fare of 230 yuan per person plus city traffic fees, the transportation cost per person increases by about 260 yuan, along with the fatigue of half a day’s travel.

  • In Kunming, Out Lijiang: Covers Dali and Lijiang, traveling north along the railway line
  • In Lijiang, Out Shangri-La: Adapts to the high-altitude Northwest Yunnan route, with a total itinerary of about 5 to 6 days
  • In Kunming, Out Xishuangbanna: Takes the tropical South Yunnan route; the two cities are 530 kilometers apart
  • In Dali, Out Xishuangbanna: Cross-regional transfer route; requires a 50-minute intra-province flight

Searching for tickets on the same date, the one-way fare from Shanghai to Lijiang Sanyi Airport is usually 200 to 300 yuan higher than to Kunming Changshui Airport. Using the saved 260 yuan backtracking cost to make up the ticket price difference makes the total capital expenditure basically the same.

A one-way route without turning back can reduce the number of times large luggage is moved on and off at transfer stations. Large suitcases over 24 inches have limited storage space on luggage racks at both ends of high-speed rail cabins; when full during holidays, they often need to be placed in front of seats, compressing legroom.

Lijiang Sanyi Airport is about 28 kilometers from Dayan Old Town. After arrival, taking the airport bus to the Lantian Hotel station in the city costs 20 yuan and takes 45 minutes; taking a taxi or ride-hailing car via the Dali-Lijiang Expressway takes about 40 minutes to reach the South Gate of the Old Town, with a metered price between 80 to 100 yuan.

Dali Fengyi Airport is located on the east bank of Erhai Lake, 13 kilometers from Xiaguan urban area and 28 kilometers from Dali Old Town. This airport has fewer direct flights to provincial capitals; most out-of-province flights require a 30 to 50-minute layover at Kunming Changshui Airport or Chengdu Tianfu Airport.

  • Lijiang Sanyi Airport: 28 km from Old Town, ride-hailing approx. 80 yuan, 40 minutes one way
  • Dali Fengyi Airport: 28 km from Old Town, ride-hailing approx. 70 yuan, 50 minutes one way
  • Xishuangbanna Gasa Airport: 5.5 km from Gaozhuang, taxi approx. 15 yuan, 15 minutes one way
  • Diqing Shangri-La Airport: 5 km from Dukezong Old Town, taxi approx. 15 yuan, 15 minutes one way

For tourists arranging a South Yunnan route, leaving from Xishuangbanna Gasa Airport is the most energy-saving plan. Gasa Airport is located southwest of Jinghong urban area, only 5.5 kilometers from the popular Gaozhuang Xishuangjing business district. For a flight taking off at 8:00 PM, leaving the city hotel at 6:00 PM still allows ample check-in time.

The commute to Shangri-La Airport is also extremely short. Diqing Shangri-La Airport is only 5 kilometers from Dukezong Old Town, reachable in 15 minutes by car. In an area at 3280 meters altitude, reducing the number of steps taken while carrying large luggage can effectively lower the probability of hypoxia caused by strenuous exercise.

The best window for booking inter-city flights is 15 to 30 days before departure. Airlines usually release discounted seats on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoons; tickets for the same route can be 5% to 10% cheaper than on Friday and Saturday.

  • Keep an eye out for special inter-city transfer tickets from China Eastern and Lucky Air within Yunnan
  • Confirm whether return feeder flights include a 20 kg free checked baggage allowance
  • Compare whether the time difference between direct and stopover flights exceeds 2.5 hours

The default ticket for some low-cost airlines does not include checked baggage; purchasing 10 kg of excess baggage on-site costs about 120 yuan. Check the cabin rules when buying tickets and supplement the baggage allowance online beforehand; the price is usually 30% cheaper than the manual counter at the airport.

Using High-Speed Rail

More than 150 pairs of bullet trains depart daily from Kunming Station and Kunming South Station to various prefectures and cities in the province. Giving up the roughly 5-hour bus ride for a C-series or D-series train saves nearly 3 hours of commuting time.

The straight-line distance from Kunming to Dali is about 260 kilometers; driving or taking a large bus via the Hangzhou-Ruili Expressway usually takes 4.5 to 5 hours. Taking the Kunming-Chuxiong-Dali intercity bullet train, the fastest trip takes only 1 hour 52 minutes; most trips are around 2 hours 10 minutes. There are nearly 50 trains back and forth all day, with second-class seats uniformly priced at 145 yuan.

Dali Railway Station is currently undergoing reconstruction; the transitional station building is about 800 meters from the exit. Passengers with large suitcases over 24 inches should slow down when passing through the temporary steel-structured pedestrian bridge. There are dedicated tourist buses outside Dali Station square, costing 5 yuan and reaching the South Gate of Dali Old Town in 35 minutes.

Continuing north from Dali to Lijiang, the railway is about 160 kilometers long. More than 15 bullet and regular trains run between the two places daily. Bullet trains take between 1 hour 20 minutes to 1 hour 40 minutes, with second-class seats costing 80 yuan. Regular train hard seats cost 34 yuan, with a travel time of about 2 hours 15 minutes.

  • Bullet train schedules are concentrated between 9:00 AM and 3:00 PM, with departures every 40 minutes
  • Regular trains mostly depart in the afternoon or evening, suitable for itineraries where sightseeing continues in the morning
  • Bus No. 104 is on the right side of the Lijiang Station exit; 1 yuan to reach areas around the Old Town
  • A ride-hailing car from Lijiang Station to the South Gate of the Old Town is about 10 km, taking 25 minutes and costing approx. 25 yuan

The Lijiang-Shangri-La Railway opened at the end of last year, reducing the commute from a 3.5-hour bus ride to a 1 hour 18 minute bullet train ride. This line is 139 kilometers long, passing through high-altitude mountains like Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and Tiger Leaping Gorge.

About 6 bullet trains run daily between Lijiang and Shangri-La, with the earliest departing at 8:00 AM and the latest at 4:30 PM. Second-class seats are priced at 63 or 73 yuan, and first-class seats are 100 or 116 yuan. Shangri-La Station is less than 6 kilometers from Dukezong Old Town, reachable in 15 minutes by taxi.

The domestic section of the China-Laos Railway closely connects Kunming with Pu’er and Xishuangbanna, with several passenger stations along the way.

From ➔ To Distance Fastest Time Second-Class Fare Daily Trains
Kunming South ➔ Pu’er 400 km 2 hours 30 min 170 yuan Approx. 30
Kunming South ➔ Xishuangbanna 500 km 3 hours 15 min 215 yuan Approx. 35
Pu’er ➔ Xishuangbanna 100 km 40 min 45 yuan Approx. 30
Dali ➔ Baoshan 133 km 1 hour 10 min 64 yuan Approx. 15

C-series trains from Kunming to Xishuangbanna pass through Yuxi, Mojiang, and Pu’er. Boarding at Kunming South Station, the altitude along the way drops from 1900 meters to 580 meters in Jinghong City. The temperature in the cabin will rise as the altitude decreases; it is easy to take off layers of clothing on the train to adapt to the temperature difference.

Xishuangbanna Station is built on a hillside southwest of Jinghong City, with a large drop at the exit. The station square has direct tourist buses to Gaozhuang Xishuangjing, with a one-way fare of 15 yuan and departures every 30 minutes. If choosing a ride-hailing car, it takes about 20 minutes to travel 9 kilometers to the Starlight Night Market area, costing approx. 25 yuan.

During peak travel seasons like July, August, and statutory long holidays, bullet train tickets within the province are very tight. Morning and forenoon trains from Dali to Lijiang and Kunming to Xishuangbanna often sell out within 10 minutes of release. Setting a release reminder on the 12306 APP 14 days in advance and submitting orders exactly when they are released can improve the success rate.

The weight capacity and space of luggage racks in bullet train cabins are limited. Large 28-inch suitcases with a total length, width, and height exceeding 130 cm cannot fit into the overhead racks and must be placed in the large luggage storage areas at both ends of the cabins. Each cabin’s storage area can only hold 4 to 5 large cases, so try to find a spot as soon as you board.

Some cross-line trains allow passengers to pay on board to extend their journey. For example, if you only bought a ticket to Pu’er Station from Kunming, you can find the conductor to pay the 45 yuan difference for the Pu’er to Xishuangbanna section and get off at the final stop. During holidays, if the train’s overload rate reaches the regulated limit, the conductor will stop processing extension requests.

Classic Routes

Plan the itinerary based on the number of vacation days. After landing at Changshui Airport, the effective tour time on the first day is often less than half a day. The province covers nearly 394,000 square kilometers, and inter-city transfers take a long time; for a 5 to 6-day itinerary, it is suggested to limit the scope to 2 cities.

Taking the Kunming-Dali-Lijiang single line as an example, there are 48 C-series intercity bullet trains between Kunming South Station and Dali Station daily, with second-class seats costing 145 yuan and taking 2 hours 10 minutes. After arriving at Dali Station, taking a taxi to the South Gate of Dali Old Town is about 17 km, taking 40 minutes and costing approx. 45 yuan.

Leaving 2 full days for Dali is a mature approach. The road around Erhai Lake is about 130 kilometers long, divided into East Lake and West Lake sections. The East Lake line is 65 kilometers long, consisting of two-way, two-lane motorized roads. Renting a standard sedan costs 150 to 200 yuan per day.

  • Xizhou Ancient Town is located by the West Lake, 18 km from Dali Old Town; visiting takes about 2 hours
  • Shuanglang Ancient Town is located by the East Lake, 25 km from Xizhou; streets are narrow so walking is suggested, taking 1.5 hours
  • Chongsheng Temple Three Pagodas ticket is 75 yuan; many steps in the scenic area, tour plus descent takes 2.5 hours
  • Private cars are prohibited in the West Lake Ecological Corridor; renting a shared bicycle for 10 km takes about 1 hour

After finishing the Dali itinerary and going to Lijiang, the bullet train from Dali Station to Lijiang Station takes 1.5 hours and costs 80 yuan for a second-class seat. Lijiang Railway Station is 10 km from Lijiang Old Town. The Old Town is entirely flagstone roads, making pulling suitcases difficult; confirm if the guesthouse is near the Old Town entrance before booking.

Jade Dragon Snow Mountain Glacier Park cableway tickets must be snatched at 20:00 the night before on the official mini-program; the price is 140 yuan and there are time slot limits. It takes 40 minutes from the Old Town to the Snow Mountain Tourist Center, and a 100 yuan entry fee is required. The cableway lifts you from 3356m to 4506m in 15 minutes.

After visiting the Snow Mountain, take the shuttle for 10 minutes to reach Blue Moon Valley. If the vacation is extended to 7-9 days, you can extend north from Lijiang to Shangri-La or east to Lugu Lake. Lijiang to Lugu Lake is 200 km one way.

Most sections are winding mountain roads, and a bus takes 3.5 to 4 hours. Lugu Lake entry is 70 yuan, and the loop around the lake is about 70 km. High-speed rail has opened between Lijiang and Shangri-La, taking 1 hour 18 minutes. Shangri-La is at 3280 meters altitude.

  • Pudacuo National Park entry plus shuttle is 138 yuan; the hiking boardwalk is approx. 3.3 km
  • Songzanlin Monastery entry is 90 yuan; the main hall is at 3300m, slow down when climbing 146 steps
  • Napa Lake loop is approx. 30 km; chartering a car for half a day costs approx. 150 to 200 yuan
  • Dukezong Old Town has the world’s largest prayer wheel, weighing 60 tons, requiring multiple people to pull together

In autumn/winter or when traveling with seniors/children, a 5-7 day tropical route in South Yunnan is more suitable. The bullet train from Kunming South Station to Xishuangbanna Station takes 3 hours 45 minutes. Daytime temperatures in Jinghong in December can reach 25℃, dropping to 14℃ at night; prepare summer clothes plus a thin coat.

The CAS Tropical Botanical Garden is in Menglun Town, 60 km from Jinghong City; a 1-hour bus ride, and the garden covers 1125 hectares. The tour is divided into West and East sections; most tourists choose the West section, entry 80 yuan, taking 3 hours on foot.

  • Wild Elephant Valley entry is 60 yuan, 35 km from the city; check the schedule for watching elephants bathe
  • Manting Park entry is 40 yuan, formerly the Dai royal garden; there are boat release activities in the lake in the afternoon
  • Gaozhuang Xishuangjing Starlight Night Market has all stalls out after 19:30; bargaining room for goods is around 10%

The number of vacation days determines the city combination. Control distant suburban attractions to 1 per day and urban surroundings to 1-2 per day; keep total daily steps within 15,000 to ensure the body doesn’t experience discomfort from fatigue.
