Zhangjiajie 3-Day Public Transport Guide

Day 1: Arrive in Zhangjiajie → Downtown → Wulingyuan Scenic Area Entrance

Arrival by Train: From Zhangjiajie West Station to the Downtown Hub

Last time I took the high-speed rail to Zhangjiajie West Station, arriving at 10:20 AM. After exiting, I followed the blue-and-white “Bus Boarding” signs and turned right for 50 meters to reach the bus platform. Bus Route 5 has a green body with a “Central Bus Station” destination sign on the front windshield. The fare is 2 yuan (there is a coin box next to the driver, so having exact change is smoother). There were seven or eight people on board, mostly tourists from the Jiangsu and Zhejiang areas. 15 minutes later, we arrived at the Central Bus Station. Upon getting off, you can see the “Wulingyuan Scenic Area Line” ticket window right on the left side of the entrance.

Once, a friend took a late-night high-speed train to the West Station (21:00). The last Bus Route 5 departs at 20:00, so they had to take a taxi. The driver charged 30 yuan (10 yuan more than daytime), taking 20 minutes via the highway to reach the Central Bus Station. Therefore, if arriving after 8:00 PM, it is recommended to take a taxi directly rather than gambling on the bus.

Arrival by Plane: Two Choices from Hehua Airport to Downtown

If you fly into Hehua Airport at 2:00 PM, exit the terminal and turn left for 200 meters to reach the Route 4 bus stop (the sign says “Central Bus Station”). The fare is 2 yuan, and it takes 30 minutes. I took it once; the air conditioning was strong, and as we passed the Guanliping Business District, I caught a glimpse of the Tianmen Mountain Cableway towers. By taxi, the metered fare from the airport to the Central Bus Station is about 20 yuan, but during evening rush hour (17-19:00), it might reach 25 yuan due to traffic. Also, since there are many one-way streets downtown, the probability of drivers taking detours is high, making the bus more reliable.

Downtown → Wulingyuan Landmark Gate: Direct Bus Details

Buy a ticket at the “Wulingyuan Line” window in the Central Bus Station for 13 yuan/person. The timetable is posted on the window: first bus at 7:00, last bus at 18:00, departing every 30 minutes. I chose the 9:00 AM bus (to avoid morning rush hour). The vehicle is a yellow Yutong bus with USB charging ports in the front. During the 1.5-hour drive, after passing the Shadi Toll Station, we entered the mountains, and low hills and bamboo forests began to appear outside. Arriving at Wulingyuan Bus Station at 10:35 AM, I followed the red “Landmark Gate” (Biaozhimen) arrows for a 500-meter flat walk (with shade), passing a small shop selling kudzu root powder with a very strong aroma.

Transport Mode Start End Cost Time Notes
Bus Route 5 Zhangjiajie West Station Central Bus Station 2 yuan 15 minutes Last bus 20:00, bring change
Bus Route 4 Hehua Airport Central Bus Station 2 yuan 30 minutes Avoid evening rush hour traffic
Wulingyuan Direct Bus Central Bus Station Wulingyuan Bus Station 13 yuan 1.5 hours Every 30 mins, operates 7-18:00

First Stop Huangshi Village: Cableway to the Top and Summit Views

After reaching the Landmark Gate, first buy the 228 yuan 4-day ticket (including eco-buses). The window provides a map marking the eco-bus routes for each attraction. The eco-bus station is to the right of the ticket hall. The white minibuses offer free rides to the “Huangshi Village Cableway Station” in just 8 minutes (there are voice announcements on board). I chose the one-way cableway for 65 yuan to go up—although the walking path is free, climbing 1200 meters over 2 hours was something I didn’t dare try with my bad knees. The cableway cabin is a blue two-seater with clean glass. During the ascent, you can see the cedar forests below and the embryonic forms of the sandstone peak forests in the distance. The Liuqi Pavilion Viewing Platform at the summit is the prime spot to see the Hallelujah Mountains. When I arrived at 11:30 AM, the mist had just cleared; that isolated peak looked like a shaved building block, and the sunlight hitting the rock walls glowed golden. I took the cableway back down (same price for one way) and returned to the cableway station at 15:00, taking the eco-bus back to the Landmark Gate.

Accommodation and Food: Guesthouse Experience near the Landmark Gate

Around 6:00 PM, I checked into “Shanyu Guesthouse” opposite the Landmark Gate (the owner, Mr. Li, is a local Tujia person). A standard room was 150 yuan/night, featuring wooden floors and Tujia brocade wall hangings, with the window facing the peak forest. After dropping off my luggage, Uncle Li helped me store my backpack at the front desk (5 yuan/item), saying, “Go into the mountains light tomorrow.” He recommended the Stir-fried Cured Meat with Bracken made in his kitchen. The cured meat was smoked last winter, with a perfect balance of fat and lean that wasn’t greasy. The bracken was crisp and tender with a slight wild bitter aroma. I ate two bowls of rice with it, costing about 40 yuan per person.

Uncle Li said that during peak season (summer vacation), this room costs 280 yuan and is hard to book. He grows chili peppers and eggplants in his backyard, and breakfast includes freshly picked cucumbers, which is much more authentic than the restaurants in the scenic area.

Day 1 Spending Summary: High-speed rail ticket (varies by origin) + Bus 5 yuan + Bus 13 yuan + Entrance ticket 228 yuan + Cableway 65 yuan + Accommodation 150 yuan + Dinner 40 yuan ≈ 501 yuan (excluding major travel costs). The key is to take the bus before 9:00 AM to avoid the afternoon crowds, and look for the white minibuses for eco-transport; don’t trust the illegal private cars soliciting passengers by the roadside.

Day 2: Wulingyuan Core Scenic Area: Yuanjiajie → Tianzi Mountain → Ten-Mile Gallery

Morning in Yuanjiajie: Bailong Elevator to the Top and First Peak Forest Sighting

At 8:30 AM, I departed from the Landmark Gate eco-bus station. The white minibus is a free ride, and the voice announcement said “Bailong Elevator direction.” It took 15 minutes to reach the “Bailong Elevator” stop. There were about a dozen people queuing at the platform. I chose a cabin on the side—Bailong Elevator is 65 yuan one way. As the transparent cabin rises, you can see the quartz sandstone peak forest rising from the ground like bamboo shoots. It reached the summit in 1 minute and 58 seconds with slight ear popping. Walking 50 meters left from the summit parking lot is the First Bridge under Heaven, a natural stone arch spanning two mountain peaks. The arch is about 3 meters thick with a hundred-meter deep valley below; the wind blowing from the bottom is quite chilly. Walking further to the Hallelujah Mountain viewing platform, the panorama suddenly opens up—that solitary stone pillar peak is half-wrapped in clouds, looking like a floating sky garden. When I arrived at 9:45 AM, the clouds dispersed, and the sunlight gilded the rock walls.

While queuing, I met a local guide who said, “Don’t walk on the bluestone paths after rain, the moss is very slippery.” My Vibram-soled hiking shoes have deep treads, so I didn’t slip on the wet stones, but a friend wearing sneakers nearly fell and only dared to continue after borrowing my shoe covers.

  • Walking to connect the viewing platforms takes about 2 hours: From the First Bridge under Heaven → Hallelujah Mountain → Mihun Stage → Back Garden. The bluestone path is flat but has many forks, so follow the signs closely.
  • Key point: Wear non-slip hiking shoes and bring a bottle of water (bottled water at the summit stalls is 5 yuan/bottle, expensive but convenient).
Item Details Cost Time
Eco-bus Landmark Gate → Bailong Elevator Stop (Free) 0 yuan 15 minutes
Bailong Elevator One-way uphill 65 yuan 1 min 58 sec
Platform Walk Connecting 4 core points 0 yuan 2 hours

Midday Yuanjiajie → Tianzi Mountain: Eco-bus Transfer and Peak Forest Close-ups

At 11:00 AM, I took the eco-bus from the Yuanjiajie parking lot. The white minibus is free and takes 25 minutes to reach Helong Park at Tianzi Mountain. After the bus parked, I walked inside to see the Helong Bronze Statue standing in the center of the plaza with layered peak forests behind it. Walking 5 minutes left along the wooden boardwalk, I reached Imperial Pen Peak (Yubifeng), where a dozen stone peaks stand side-by-side like writing brushes on a scholar’s desk, their tips still bearing some reddish rock crust. 50 meters further is Fairy Scattering Flowers (Xiannv Sanhua); the main peak looks like a young lady holding a flower basket, with two small peaks nearby like “attendant maids.” I took side-lit photos at 11:20 AM, where the shadows cut across the stone peaks, creating excellent depth. There are aunties in the park selling corn on the cob for 5 yuan each; they are sweet and chewy with a hint of roasted fragrance, perfect for a quick lunch.

Afternoon Tianzi Mountain → Ten-Mile Gallery: Cableway Down and Stream-side Stroll

At 1:00 PM, I took the Tianzi Mountain Cableway for 72 yuan one way down. The large glass windows in the cabin allow for a bird’s-eye view of the terrace-like peak forests of the Chapanta Scenic Area. It reached the “Sanchalukou” (Triple Fork) at the mountain base in 8 minutes. I walked 50 meters to transfer to an eco-bus (white minibus, free), arriving at the Ten-Mile Gallery Station in 15 minutes. I chose to walk the 3 km (1.5 hours). The wooden boardwalk by the stream is flat. Along the way, you can see the Herb Picking Old Man (whose profile looks like an old man with a basket on his back) and the Three Sisters Peak (becoming taller from left to right, like three sisters standing together). Halfway through, a sightseeing tram passed by, and the driver shouted, “38 yuan one way, hop on if you’re tired,” but I didn’t take it—walking allowed me to hear the birds and the sound of the stream, which was much more pleasant than riding.

Evening Return and Dinner at Xibu Street

At 3:30 PM, I took the eco-bus (free) from the Ten-Mile Gallery station back to the Landmark Gate in 20 minutes. After dropping off my things, I went to Xibu Street (a 10-minute walk from the Landmark Gate) and found a restaurant called “Old Stove Sanxiaguo.” Sanxiaguo is a stew of pork belly, dried tofu, and white radish chunks in a large iron pot. The broth is thick with a hint of spice. Served with a bowl of rice, it cost about 50 yuan per person and was very filling. The owner said the pot needs to be stewed for at least 40 minutes to be flavorful. I tasted the soup, and it was indeed incredibly fresh. Day 2 Spending Summary: Bailong Elevator 65 yuan + Tianzi Mountain Cableway 72 yuan + Lunch corn 5 yuan + Dinner 50 yuan ≈ 192 yuan (excluding accommodation). The key is to arrive at Yuanjiajie early in the morning to avoid the army of tour groups after 10:00 AM, ensuring no one fights for photo spots at the viewing platforms; walking the Ten-Mile Gallery is better than rushing, as the stream and bird songs are worth more than the ride.

Day 3: Golden Whip Stream → Downtown Return (or Tianmen Mountain)

At 7:30 AM, I departed from the Landmark Gate eco-bus station. The white minibus is free, and the announcement said “Golden Whip Stream direction.” It took 10 minutes to reach the Golden Whip Stream Stop. The entrance is Shuiraosimen—where four small streams converge into Golden Whip Stream, marked with a sign saying “Start of the Essence Section.” I walked 2 km along the essence section toward the east (from Shuiraosimen → Meeting from a Thousand Miles Away and back). The bluestone path is laid by the stream, and the water is so clear you can see the moss on the pebbles.

  • Golden Whip Rock: A 20-minute walk leads to the core landscape. This sandstone peak is about 380 meters high, tapering towards the top like a golden whip plunged into the stream bed. The horizontal textures on the rock wall look like lash marks from a whip, glowing pale yellow in the sunlight.
  • Eagle Protecting the Whip: 50 meters to the left of Golden Whip Rock, an eagle-shaped stone peak spreads its wings to protect the rock. The eagle’s head faces east, and the wingtips rest right at the waist of Golden Whip Rock. Locals say it’s an “old eagle protecting its precious whip.”
  • Air Quality: The negative oxygen ions by the stream are incredibly high; deep breaths leave a sweet taste in the throat. The air feels twice as “thick” as downtown air. I brought a 550ml bottle of water (stalls by the stream sell them for 5 yuan/bottle, expensive but necessary for replenishment). I turned back at the Meeting from a Thousand Miles Away spot (where two stone peaks look like people embracing); going further leads to undeveloped paths with many confusing forks.

Once I was greedy and wanted to walk to “Zicao Pool,” but I followed the wrong path into a bamboo forest. Fortunately, I met a cleaning lady who pointed the way: “The essence section ends at Meeting from a Thousand Miles Away; there’s no scenery after that and it’s just hard on your legs.”

Midday Return Options: Operational Details for Two Choices

  • Directly back to Downtown: From the end of the Golden Whip Stream essence section at Great Oxygen Bar Square, take the eco-bus (white minibus, free) for 10 minutes to the Landmark Gate → walk 500 meters to Wulingyuan Bus Station → buy a 13 yuan direct bus ticket (departing every 30 minutes from 7:00-18:00; I took the 12:00 PM bus). You’ll arrive at Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station in 1.5 hours.
  • Transfer to Tianmen Mountain: From the Golden Whip Stream exit (toward the Forest Park Ticket Station), take an eco-bus (free) for 20 minutes to Forest Park Ticket Station → exit the scenic area, turn right for 50 meters and take Bus Route 1 (green body, “Tianmen Mountain Cableway Lower Station” sign on the front, 2 yuan, 40 minutes) → buy a 278 yuan ticket at the cableway lower station (includes round-trip cableway + summit eco-bus, valid for 4 hours, don’t stay over).
Return Option Transport Steps Cost Time Notes
Directly to Downtown Oxygen Bar Square → Eco-bus → Landmark Gate → Wulingyuan Bus Station → 13 yuan Bus → Central Station 13 yuan 1.5 hours Last bus 18:00, otherwise must take taxi (approx 80 yuan)
Transfer to Tianmen Mountain Golden Whip Stream Exit → Eco-bus → Forest Park Station → Bus 1 → Tianmen Mtn Cableway Station → 278 yuan Ticket 2 yuan + 278 yuan Bus 40 mins Bus 1 sign is not obvious, ask the park exit cleaners

Afternoon Downtown Return: Actual Comparison of Bus vs. Taxi

From the Central Bus Station returning to the Train/High-Speed Rail: Take Bus Route 5 (green body, 2 yuan, 15 minutes) to Zhangjiajie Station. I once tried the 8:00 AM bus; it was empty with plenty of seats. If you’re in a hurry, take a taxi; the metered fare is 25 yuan and takes 15 minutes (5 minutes faster than the bus, avoiding traffic lights). For the Airport: Take Bus Route 4 (2 yuan, 30 minutes) to Hehua Airport. I last took the 4:00 PM bus, passing through the Guanliping Business District where I could see the cableway towers. For early morning flights (before 8:00 AM), it is recommended to take a taxi, which costs around 30 yuan and takes 25 minutes, avoiding potential delays of the first bus (6:00 AM).

Once I had a 7:00 AM flight and took the 6:00 AM Route 4 bus, but road construction detour added 20 minutes, nearly causing me to miss the flight. I learned my lesson: always take a taxi for early flights; an extra 10 yuan buys peace of mind.

Day 3 Spending Summary: Return bus 13 yuan (or Bus Route 1 2 yuan + Tianmen Mountain 278 yuan) + Taxi 25 yuan (optional) ≈ 15-305 yuan (depending on the plan). The key is not to go past “Meeting from a Thousand Miles Away” in Golden Whip Stream, look for the white minibuses for eco-transport, ask for the Bus Route 1 stop when transferring to Tianmen Mountain, and prioritize taxis for catching flights.
