Whether you should stay in the urban area of Zhangjiajie or in Wulingyuan depends on the focus of your itinerary: to continuously visit Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, it is usually more convenient to stay in Wulingyuan to save driving time; to visit Tianmen Mountain, catch a flight or high-speed rail, it is more convenient to stay in the urban area of Yongding District. If you only have 1-2 nights, try not to change hotels; if you stay 3 nights and visit both major scenic spots, you can decide whether to change hotels based on your arrival time; if you have more than 4 nights, arrange two days in the Forest Park, and it is usually more convenient to stay in the city and Wulingyuan for one section each. Where are the urban area and Wulingyuan?
The “Zhangjiajie urban area” mentioned by tourists usually refers to the built-up area of Yongding District. The lower station of Tianmen Mountain Cableway, Zhangjiajie Central Bus Station, Zhangjiajie Station, Zhangjiajie Hehua International Airport and 72 Qilou are all on this side. Zhangjiajie West Station is located on the north side of the city. It is convenient to reach the high-speed rail station, but it is not the same as the traditional city center, nor does it mean that you can walk to Tianmen Mountain if you live there.
Wulingyuan accommodation is mainly concentrated in Wulingyuan City, Shishimen, Xibu Street, Charming Xiangxi Theater and nearby roads. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park has a large area and has entrances such as the Sign Gate, the South Gate of the Forest Park, Tianzi Mountain Gate, Zimugang Gate and Yangjiajie Gate. Living near a certain entrance can only shorten the distance to that entrance, but cannot directly shorten the transportation between all mountain attractions.[1]

Hehua Airport and Zhangjiajie Station are close to Yongding District, and the Tianmen Mountain Cableway Station is also on the urban side. Official traffic information shows that the lower station of the cableway is close to the airport, Zhangjiajie Station and the central bus station; from the urban cableway station to the gate of Tianmen Mountain, you may need to take the scenic shuttle bus according to the selected tour route.[2]
When arranging accommodation, I would not just search for “Where is the most convenient place to stay in Zhangjiajie?”, but first mark four points on the map: the arrival station or airport, the entrance to the attraction on the first day, the exit of the attraction on the last day, and the return transportation point. The four points are concentrated in Yongding District, and we live in the urban area; the entrance point for two consecutive days is in Wulingyuan, so we will stay in Wulingyuan as our main accommodation.
Where are the main attractions close?
Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain, Shili Gallery and Jinbian Creek all belong to the tourist areas on the Wulingyuan side, but they are not concentrated next to the same entrance. Staying at the sign gate is only convenient for entering the east gate. After entering the park, you still need to take an eco-friendly car and use the Bailong Sky Ladder, cableway or walking path according to the route.
Yuanjiajie and Tianzi Mountain are usually entered through the sign gate, which makes it easier to connect to the environmentally friendly vehicles in the scenic area; Shili Gallery is also close to the east gate. Jinbian Creek and Huangshi Village are more directly accessible from the south gate of the Forest Park. Official information shows that after entering from the south gate, you can walk about 500 meters to the entrance of Jinbian Creek, and the Big Oxygen Bar Plaza is also near the entrance.[3]
Tianmen Mountain is located on the urban side of Yongding District and is not the same scenic spot as Wulingyuan Forest Park. The two scenic spots cannot be connected through scenic environmentally friendly vehicles or walking trails. If you want to go from one place to another on the same day, you need to take urban road transportation again.

Public information from the Hunan Provincial Transportation Department in 2025 shows that Zhangjiajie City View Bus has connected high-speed rail stations, airports, bus stations, forest parks, Wulingyuan, Grand Canyon and other transportation points and scenic spots. Some customized services can also connect hotels and performance venues. Tourists can inquire, purchase tickets, change tickets and check vehicle status through “Xiangyue Xing”. It can reduce some transfers, but not every hotel has door-to-door service, so you still need to check the site on the day before booking.[4]
The old reference given by the official transportation information of the Grand Canyon is: it takes about 30 minutes from Wulingyuan and about 60 minutes from Zhangjiajie city. Huanglong Cave can be connected through local buses in Wulingyuan District, and Baofeng Lake is relatively close to Wulingyuan city. These pages were published earlier and can be used to understand location relationships and are not a substitute for real-time schedules and fares in 2026.[5][6][7]
What really affects the arrangement of the day during the peak season is not only the distance from Zhangjiajie city to Wulingyuan, but also the reservation time slot, security check at the park, waiting for eco-friendly vehicles, and queues for Bailong Ladder and Cableway. The Zhangjiajie Municipal Government’s 2026 “May Day” information shows that local scenic spots will adopt time-sharing, station-by-station, and line-by-line reservations, and dynamic scheduling will be carried out for locations where passenger flow is concentrated such as Bailong Sky Ladder, Tianzi Mountain, and Tianmen Mountain.[8]
The actual experience of living in the urban area
The biggest advantage of staying in the city on the day you arrive is that you don’t have to carry your luggage to Wulingyuan after the plane or high-speed rail. When arriving at Hehua Airport, Zhangjiajie Station or Zhangjiajie West Station in the evening, you can check in, eat and pack your luggage first, and then visit Tianmen Mountain at the scheduled time the next day, or go to Wulingyuan during the day.
It is also easier to control your time by staying in the city the night before your return trip. If you catch an early flight or high-speed train or leave from Tianmen Mountain in the morning, it is usually more stable to live in Yongding District than to temporarily enter the city from Wulingyuan. Especially for public transportation tourists, they have to consider waiting for the bus and loading and unloading luggage in the morning, and they cannot just look at the pure driving time on the map.

Living near Guanliping, the central bus station or the lower station of the Tianmen Mountain Cableway is more convenient to Tianmen Mountain and the bus station; if you live in the traditional city center, you may have more restaurants, shopping malls and convenience stores at night, but you may not be able to walk to the cableway station. When making a reservation, you should check the specific street, not just the words “city center.”
Going back and forth from the city to Wulingyuan every day usually adds about 80-120 minutes to a single day’s road travel. When taking public transportation, you also need to add the time from the hotel to the station, waiting for the bus, and getting off to the entrance. It is not uncommon to add about 2 hours to the day. Visiting the Forest Park for two consecutive days may take up 3-4 hours in the morning and evening, so I usually don’t recommend going back and forth from the city on both days.
The accommodation near Zhangjiajie West Station is not the same accommodation experience as in the center of Zhangjiajie.West Railway Station is suitable for late arrivals and early departures; the area around the Central Bus Station is more convenient for transfers to Wulingyuan and Tianmen Mountain. The official 2022 transportation reference shows that it takes about 18 minutes by taxi and 50 minutes by bus from West Railway Station to People’s Square, which also shows that urban transportation is still needed between West Railway Station and the traditional city center. The actual time is subject to the navigation on the day of departure.[9]
Case:Arrive at Zhangjiajie West Station at 21:00 in the evening, stay for 3 nights, visit Tianmen Mountain on the second day, and visit the Forest Park in the next two days. My arrangement is to stay in Yongding District on the first night, store my luggage at the hotel after checking out the next day, pick up my luggage after visiting Tianmen Mountain and head to Wulingyuan, and not change rooms for the next two nights. This way you only have to move your luggage once, and you don’t have to rush back to the city from Wulingyuan early in the morning to make an appointment at Tianmen Mountain.
Preparation mainly depends on public transportation and scenic area vehicles. You can first check the information in the station.Zhangjiajie public transportation itinerary reference, but the old flights, fixed fares and last flight time in the article still need to be rechecked on the day of departure.
The actual experience of living in Wulingyuan
The value of living in Wulingyuan is not only “close to the scenic spot”, but also that when you enter the forest park for two consecutive days, you can save two trips to the city. For hotels that are really close to the sign gate, it usually takes about 5-15 minutes to walk; for hotels located deep in Xibu Street, on the other side of charming Xiangxi, or on the outskirts of the city, it may take 15-30 minutes to walk, and some locations still require a short ride.
Taking one less bus ride in the morning will have a great impact on the Forest Park itinerary. While urban tourists are still going to the bus station or waiting for the bus, people living near the sign gate can already check in. However, living close does not reduce the queues for eco-cars, Bailong Ladders or ropeways within the scenic area, nor does it guarantee that any entrance is convenient.
Breakfast shops, dinner restaurants, convenience stores and pharmacies can usually be found in Wulingyuan urban area. There are relatively concentrated choices around Shishimen, Xibu Street and Charming Xiangxi, so eating in the evening is generally not difficult. When staying in the direction of Huanglong Cave, around the south gate of the Forest Park, or in a more remote B&B, the dinner options may be reduced. You should confirm in advance whether the hotel provides meals and what time the pick-up will end.
Xibu Street is suitable for eating and walking at night, but rooms facing restaurant streets, squares or night business places may be noisier. The area near Charming Xiangxi is prone to a short flow of people and vehicles when the performance ends. If you are a light sleeper or are traveling with infants or the elderly, you should check with the hotel to see if the room faces the main road, theater exit and parking lot.
Wulingyuan to Tianmen Mountain, Hehua Airport and Zhangjiajie West Station all have to return to the direction of Yongding District. When traveling to Tianmen Mountain on the same day and having to catch a high-speed train or plane, the road time from Wulingyuan to the city cannot be regarded as the entire transportation time. Check-out, baggage pickup, pick-up and queuing at Tianmen Mountain must also be added.
Being close to the scenic spot does not mean that you can walk into the scenic spot.The hotel page says “located in Wulingyuan District”, “close to the National Forest Park” or “a few hundred meters away from the scenic spot”, which cannot replace the actual walking route. The straight-line distance on the map may be short, but the actual road winds around watercourses, parking lots, walls or closed sections.
To determine whether the hotel can be entered on foot, I will locate the “hotel gate” and the “Wulingyuan sign gate ticket gate” at the same time, and then switch to walking navigation. During the route, you need to check slopes, steps, continuous traffic lights, underpasses and restricted vehicle areas. You must also confirm whether the taxi can stop in front of the hotel or can only stop at the intersection.
Where to stay in Zhangjiajie National Forest Park, you must first determine the route into the park. If you plan to visit Yuanjiajie, Tianzi Mountain and Shili Gallery, you can give priority to the area near the sign gate; if you plan to start from Jinbian Creek and Huangshi Village, the area near the south gate is more direct. within the siteZhangjiajie National Forest Park Route Instructionscan help determine the entrance, but the opening hours, reservation sites and ropeway arrangements should still be based on the information of the scenic spot on the day.
Is it near the sign gate or other areas?
Wulingyuan accommodation recommendation area cannot just write “the sign gate is the best”. Different areas solve different problems: the sign gate focuses on entering the park, Xibu Street focuses on dining, Charming Xiangxi is convenient for watching performances, the south gate is convenient for Jinbian Creek, and remote B&Bs rely more on pick-up and drop-off.

When the hotel provides “scenic area pick-up”, you need to ask which entrance it is sent to, how many buses there are every day, whether it is necessary to make an appointment in advance, whether you can pick it up after returning late, and whether it can still be picked up on the day of check-out. Saying “free pick-up and drop-off” does not mean that we are on call all day long, nor does it mean that it includes pick-up and drop-off from the airport, West Railway Station or city.
How to stay for different days
The number of days of stay affects choice more than the single-night price. If you only have one night, there is no value in moving to a hotel; if you have more than three nights, you will have room to stay in Tianmen Mountain and Forest Park separately. The following arrangements are not chartered by default and can also be implemented by public transportation tourists, but the city view bus and bus schedules must be confirmed in advance.

5 days and 4 nights:Stay 1-2 nights in the city and 2-3 nights in Wulingyuan. Generally, you only change once. Arrange two days in the Forest Park and one day in Tianmen Mountain. Choose one or two of the Grand Canyon, Huanglong Cave and Baofeng Lake according to your physical strength and return direction. There is no need to travel long distances every day just to “go to all”.

Is it worth changing the hotel?
Do you need to change hotels when traveling to Zhangjiajie? You can’t just compare the driving distance between the two places. Changing hotels will take up time for packing, checking out, storing luggage, picking up luggage, waiting for the vehicle, loading and unloading luggage, and checking in again. When one person carries a backpack, the impact is less. When a family carries more than two suitcases, the actual operation may take 1-3 hours.
Check-out is usually before noon, and check-in at the next hotel may not be available immediately. If you still want to visit scenic spots on the day of changing rooms, a common practice is to store your luggage at the original hotel and return to pick it up after the tour; you can also reserve a vehicle to take your luggage when you check out and send it directly to the next hotel. The latter method requires confirming whether the hotel is willing to collect the fees and whether the driver charges for waiting, detours and parking.
The total cost of changing hotels = transportation fees between the two places + possible storage or delivery fees + check-out and check-in time + room price difference between the two places.The cost of not changing hotels is the daily round-trip transportation fee and accumulated waiting time. Only staying 1-2 nights is usually not worth changing hotels to save a one-way trip. Where to stay with the elderly in Zhangjiajie should be judged based on the daily attractions. Under normal road conditions from urban area to Wulingyuan, the driving time is usually 40-60 minutes.
