Bus routes, first and last departure times, direct-shuttle arrangements, and traffic controls around the Ancient City may change temporarily. On the day you travel, check real-time bus information, station signs, and the drop-off point recommended by your hotel or guesthouse.
Dali Railway Station is in Xiaguan, while Dali Ancient City lies to the north. The two are about 17 kilometers apart and are not within walking distance. In normal traffic, the drive usually takes about 25–40 minutes, while a public bus generally takes about 50–70 minutes.

There are three common ways to travel from Dali Railway Station to Dali Ancient City:
- Traveling alone with light luggage: Take Bus 4 or Bus 8.
- Staying near the South Gate: Take the direct shuttle from Dali Railway Station to Dali Ancient City.
- Traveling with two or more people, carrying a lot of luggage, or arriving at night: Use a ride-hailing car or an official taxi.
Price is not the only factor that matters. Dali Ancient City has the South Gate, Erhai Gate, Cangshan Gate, and North Gate, and many guesthouses are hidden inside narrow lanes. Even after reaching “Dali Ancient City,” choosing the wrong gate can leave you pulling luggage for another one or two kilometers.
Before leaving the station, find your accommodation on the map and ask the property which gate is closest, whether a vehicle can reach the entrance, and how long the walk from the drop-off point will take. Once you know this, choosing the right transport becomes much easier.
Table of Contents
ToggleRoute Comparison
| Transport | Reference Fare | Estimated Total Time | Main Drop-off Area | Best For |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bus 8 | A few yuan per person; use the fare shown on the day | About 50–70 minutes | East Gate and Ganjia Village | Solo travelers staying near the East Gate or northeast side |
| Bus 4 | A few yuan per person; use the fare shown on the day | About 60–80 minutes | South Gate, Honglongjing, March Street, North Gate, and the Three Pagodas | Travelers staying on the south, west, or north side |
| Direct tourist shuttle | RMB 5 per person | About 40–60 minutes, including possible waiting time | Near the Erhai Lake Service Center by the Ancient City | Travelers staying near the South Gate with one large suitcase |
| Ride-hailing car | Usually about RMB 40–70 per car | About 25–40 minutes | A selected gate or the nearest accessible point to your accommodation | Groups, travelers with more luggage, and nighttime arrivals |
| Taxi | Metered or charged according to official local pricing | About 25–40 minutes | A selected Ancient City gate | Travelers who cannot or prefer not to use a ride-hailing app |
The times in the table are general door-to-door ranges. Bus time includes waiting and intermediate stops. Direct-shuttle time should include ticket purchase, gathering, and waiting to depart. During peak travel seasons, ride-hailing passengers may also need to wait for the driver to enter the designated pickup area.
Fares are not fixed either. Ride-hailing prices vary by vehicle type, time, weather, congestion, and surge pricing. Three or four travelers can usually share one car economically, but a standard five-seat sedan may not hold several passengers plus large suitcases, so a six-seat or business vehicle may be necessary.
Choose the Right Gate First
“Dali Ancient City” covers a large area and is not a precise drop-off point. If you enter only “Dali Ancient City” as your destination, the driver may use the easiest gate for parking, which may be far from your guesthouse.

Use the following guide for common accommodation areas:
| Accommodation Area | Most Convenient Entrance | Recommended Transport |
|---|---|---|
| Wenxian Road, Lvyu Road, and the southern section of Fuxing Road | South Gate | Direct shuttle, Bus 4, or ride-hailing car |
| Erhai Gate, eastern Renmin Road, and southern Hongwu Road | Erhai Gate or East Gate | Bus 8 or ride-hailing car |
| Northern Hongwu Road and the northeast side of the Ancient City | East Gate or Ganjia Village | Bus 8 or ride-hailing car |
| Western Renmin Road, March Street, and the Cangshan Gate area | Cangshan Gate or the March Street area | Bus 4 or ride-hailing car |
| North Gate Street, northern Pingdeng Road, and southern Chongsheng Road | North Gate | Bus 4 or ride-hailing car |
| Near Chongsheng Temple and the Three Pagodas | Three Pagodas direction | Bus 4 or ride-hailing car |
The East Gate is commonly called Erhai Gate, while the West Gate is commonly called Cangshan Gate. Booking pages sometimes say only “inside Dali Ancient City” without naming a gate. In that case, do not rely on the hotel name alone; open the map and check which side of the Ancient City the property is on.
When contacting your accommodation, ask these four questions:
- Which gate is closest when coming from Dali Railway Station?
- Can a taxi or ride-hailing car reach the property entrance?
- How many minutes is the walk from the drop-off point?
- Can the guesthouse collect you or your luggage from the gate or parking area?
One kilometer may not look far on a map, but the Ancient City has stone-paved streets, narrow lanes, and crowds. Pulling a large suitcase is slower than walking on a normal road, especially in rain, at night, or during holidays.
What Happens If You Choose the Wrong Gate
Choosing the wrong gate usually will not make the accommodation impossible to find, but it can add a long walk, a second short taxi ride, and extra effort carrying luggage.
For example, if your guesthouse is on eastern Renmin Road but you get off at the South Gate, you may need to continue along Fuxing Road or another internal street. If you are staying near Cangshan Gate but take Bus 8 to the East Gate, you may have to cross much of the Ancient City.
Travelers with only a small bag may treat this as sightseeing, but it is a poor plan if you have a large suitcase, elderly companions, young children, or a wheelchair.
Taking a Public Bus
From Dali Railway Station, compare Bus 4 and Bus 8. Both start at the station, but they approach the Ancient City from different sides.

A simple rule is:
- Staying near Erhai Gate, Hongwu Road, or eastern Renmin Road: Check Bus 8 first.
- Staying near the South Gate, Honglongjing, Cangshan Gate, March Street, or the North Gate: Check Bus 4 first.
After arriving at Dali Railway Station, follow the signs for “Bus” or “Public Transport.” Buses, tourist coaches, and some shuttle vehicles depart from transport areas outside the station. Do not board the first vehicle you see at the roadside. Confirm the route number, direction, and your intended stop first.
Bus 4 or Bus 8?
The difference between Bus 4 and Bus 8 is not simply which one is faster. The more important question is how far you still need to walk after getting off.
Bus 8 approaches the Ancient City mainly from the east and is useful for Erhai Gate, eastern Renmin Road, Hongwu Road, and the northeast side. Bus 4 serves the South Gate, Honglongjing, Renmin Road intersection, March Street intersection, and North Gate intersection, making it more suitable for the south, west, and north sides.
Suppose Bus 8 saves ten minutes on the ride but leaves you 1.5 kilometers from your guesthouse, while Bus 4 takes ten minutes longer but leaves you only 300 meters away. In that case, Bus 4 may still have the shorter door-to-door time and require less effort.
Choose in this order:
- Confirm which gate is closest to your accommodation.
- Find the nearest Bus 4 or Bus 8 stop.
- Check the real-time arrival time for both routes.
- Compare the walking distance after getting off.
- Only then compare the time spent on the bus.
Taking Bus 8
Bus 8 links Dali Railway Station, central Xiaguan, and the eastern side of Dali Ancient City. It is one of the main public-bus choices for travelers heading toward Erhai Gate.
After leaving Dali Railway Station, the route passes through Xiaguan, Dali Road, Yuexi Village, Dali Ancient City East Gate, and Ganjia Village. Travelers staying near Erhai Gate, Hongwu Road, eastern Renmin Road, or the northeast side should compare the “Dali Ancient City East Gate” and “Ganjia Village” stops.
Many older online guides still say that Bus 8 terminates at the Dali Ancient City Bus Depot. That information has changed.
From May 24, 2026, the Ancient City-bound terminus of Bus 8 was changed from the Ancient City Bus Depot to Ganjia Village. The Zhonghe Road Intersection and Ancient City Bus Depot stops were removed, while the main route remained otherwise unchanged.
This means travelers staying near Zhonghe Road, Cangshan Gate, or the western side should not follow old instructions to ride to the former bus depot. If Ganjia Village is far from your accommodation, compare Bus 4 or take a car instead.
Use the following steps:
- After leaving the station, enter the public-transport boarding area.
- Find Bus 8 and confirm that it is heading toward Dali Ancient City and Ganjia Village.
- Open your accommodation location on the map after boarding.
- For Erhai Gate, check the “Dali Ancient City East Gate” stop.
- For Hongwu Road or the northeast side, compare the “Ganjia Village” stop.
- Organize your luggage one stop early so you can get off without rushing.
If the booking says only “inside the Ancient City” and does not name a nearby stop, do not guess. Show the accommodation location to the driver or a station staff member and ask whether the East Gate or Ganjia Village is closer.
Taking Bus 4
Bus 4 starts at Dali Railway Station and travels through Xiaguan, Guanyintang, Lvyu Road Intersection, Dali Ancient City South Gate, Honglongjing, Renmin Road Intersection, March Street Intersection, North Gate Intersection, and then toward Chongsheng Temple and the Three Pagodas.
Bus 4 is usually more practical than Bus 8 for the following areas:
- The South Gate and Wenxian Road;
- Lvyu Road and southern Fuxing Road;
- Honglongjing and western Renmin Road;
- March Street and Cangshan Gate;
- North Gate Street and southern Chongsheng Road;
- Chongsheng Temple and the Three Pagodas.
Bus 4 has more stops and may take longer than Bus 8, but it follows the south, west, and north sides of the Ancient City. For accommodation in these areas, it can save you from crossing the city on foot from the East Gate.
Use the following steps:
- Find Bus 4 in the public-transport area at Dali Railway Station.
- Confirm that it is heading toward Dali Ancient City and Chongsheng Temple/Three Pagodas.
- For the South Gate area, check the “Dali Ancient City South Gate” stop.
- For western Renmin Road, compare “Honglongjing” and “Renmin Road Intersection.”
- For Cangshan Gate or March Street, check “March Street Intersection.”
- For the North Gate area, check “North Gate Intersection.”
- For the Three Pagodas, remain on the bus toward the northern end of the route.
Dali Ancient City South Gate, Honglongjing, Renmin Road Intersection, and March Street Intersection are separate locations. Before boarding, send your guesthouse location to the property and ask which stop you should use.
Advantages of the Bus
The main advantage is the low fare. Solo travelers can usually save several dozen yuan compared with taking a ride-hailing car. If you arrive during the day, have little luggage, and stay near a bus stop, the bus offers good value.
The bus is also suitable when:
- You do not need to catch a fixed-time cable car, Erhai Lake tour bus, or other connection;
- You have only a backpack, cabin-size suitcase, or one easy-to-handle bag;
- You have confirmed that the accommodation is close to the stop;
- You arrive well before the last bus;
- You want to keep transport costs low.
Do not judge only by the cheap ticket. If the bus stop is still two kilometers from your guesthouse and you need a short taxi ride afterward, the saving becomes smaller.
Disadvantages of the Bus
The bus travels through Xiaguan and makes many stops. It normally takes about 50–70 minutes and may take longer during rush hour, summer holidays, or public holidays.
Travel becomes less convenient with a suitcase larger than 24 inches. If there is no luggage space, you need to hold it yourself. You may not get a seat during busy periods, and your bags must not block other passengers while boarding and leaving.
The bus should not be your first choice if:
- You are traveling with elderly companions, young children, a stroller, or a wheelchair;
- Everyone has a large suitcase;
- Your guesthouse is deep inside the Ancient City or far from a bus stop;
- You need to attend an activity at a fixed time after arriving;
- You leave the station close to the last-bus time;
- It is raining or traffic controls are in place around the Ancient City.
Bus routes may be adjusted temporarily because of construction, festivals, or traffic controls. On the day of travel, check real-time bus information again, especially the terminus, last departure, and any temporarily suspended stops.
Taking the Direct Shuttle
Dali Railway Station operates a tourist shuttle to Dali Ancient City, also known as the Dali Railway Station–Dali Ancient City Express. Published operating information lists a fare of RMB 5 per person, no intermediate stops, and a journey of about 40 minutes to the Erhai Lake Service Center near the Ancient City.
Use the following steps:
- After passing through the exit gates at Dali Railway Station, follow the floor and station signs to the left.
- Look for the tourist-shuttle information or service point.
- Confirm that you are buying a one-way ticket for the Dali Railway Station–Dali Ancient City Express.
- Ask how long the expected wait is for the next departure.
- After buying the ticket, follow staff directions to the actual boarding point.
- After arriving at the Erhai Lake Service Center, walk or use a short local transfer according to your accommodation location.
The actual boarding areas for tourist shuttles, tourist coaches, and public buses may require you to use a connecting passage after leaving the station. Traffic organization can also change with passenger volume, so do not rely only on old photographs. Follow current station signs and staff instructions.
Rolling Departures
“Rolling departures” does not mean the vehicle leaves immediately when you reach the counter. Departures are usually organized around high-speed-train arrival times and the number of waiting passengers.
When demand is low, the vehicle may wait for more passengers. When demand is high, you may have to queue or wait because the previous vehicle is full. For this reason, do not assume the entire trip will take only 40 minutes.
Before buying a ticket, you can ask:
“I only need a one-way ticket from Dali Railway Station to Dali Ancient City. What is the fare, when is the next expected departure, and exactly where is the terminus?”
Once you know these three details, decide whether the wait is worthwhile. If the next departure is far away and two or three people can share a reasonably priced ride-hailing car, switching to a car may make more sense.
Advantages of the Direct Shuttle
The shuttle runs without intermediate stops, gives each passenger a seat, and provides more convenient luggage storage than a normal city bus. For first-time visitors who are unfamiliar with local bus stops, it is easier to use.
It is particularly suitable for accommodation near:
- Dali Ancient City South Gate;
- Wenxian Road;
- Lvyu Road;
- Southern Fuxing Road;
- Southern Bo’ai Road;
- Hotels and guesthouses outside the southern side of the Ancient City.
For one traveler with a large suitcase, the shuttle is usually easier than the bus and cheaper than taking a car alone. For accommodation near the South Gate, it offers a good balance of cost and convenience.
Limitations of the Direct Shuttle
The shuttle terminates near the Erhai Lake Service Center, not at every guesthouse. “Arriving at Dali Ancient City” does not mean you have reached Renmin Road, Erhai Gate, or Cangshan Gate.
If your accommodation is near Erhai Gate, eastern Renmin Road, Cangshan Gate, March Street, or the North Gate, you may still need a long walk or another short car ride after leaving the shuttle. Include this second-stage time and cost in your comparison.
The shuttle should not be your first choice when:
- Three or four people are traveling together and a shared ride-hailing car costs only slightly more per person;
- Your guesthouse is near the East, West, or North Gate;
- You are traveling with elderly people, young children, or several large bags;
- You arrive late and cannot confirm that departures are still running;
- You must reach a scheduled activity on time after arrival.
Before paying, confirm the fare, destination, and departure arrangement, and ask whether the purchase is for transport only. If staff also introduce Erhai Lake tours, Cangshan trips, or other travel products, buy them only if you need them. You do not need an additional package in order to take the shuttle.
Taking a Taxi or Ride-Hailing Car
A direct car from Dali Railway Station to Dali Ancient City normally takes about 25–40 minutes in ordinary traffic. Prepare for a ride-hailing fare of roughly RMB 40–70 per car, but use the live price shown in the app when placing the order.

The main factors affecting the fare are:
- Whether the destination is the South, East, West, or North Gate;
- Peak tourist season or a period when several trains arrive together;
- Rain, traffic congestion, and surge pricing;
- Whether you choose a normal five-seat car, a six-seat car, or a business vehicle;
- Temporary traffic controls around the Ancient City.
After leaving the station, follow signs to the correct “Ride-Hailing” or “Taxi” area. The taxi queue and ride-hailing pickup point may be in different locations. Ride-hailing drivers may not be allowed to stop directly outside the exit, so check the pickup zone and area number shown in the app.
During peak periods, walk to the designated pickup area before placing the order. This reduces the chance that the driver arrives while you are still trying to find the pickup zone.
Enter the Correct Destination
Do not enter only “Dali Ancient City.” Use this process:
- Search for the full guesthouse or hotel name.
- Check which side of the Ancient City the map pin is on.
- Ask the front desk whether vehicles can reach the entrance.
- If a car cannot reach it, enter the gate or parking point recommended by the property.
- Use the order notes to mention large luggage or the number of travelers.
For accommodation inside the Ancient City, ordinary vehicles may be able to reach only an outer road. Before ending the trip, confirm your exact location and walking route. Do not close the order immediately just because the app says “destination reached.”
If the property sends you a map pin, use that location first instead of replacing it with a nearby popular gate. Some properties use names such as “South Gate Branch” or “Erhai Gate Branch” even though the actual entrance is still some distance from the gate.
Better Value for Groups
If a ride costs RMB 50, the cost per person is approximately:
| Number of Travelers | Cost per Person |
|---|---|
| 1 | RMB 50 |
| 2 | RMB 25 |
| 3 | About RMB 17 |
| 4 | About RMB 13 |
For three or four people, the per-person difference between a car and the shuttle becomes much smaller, while the car can take you to the nearest road-accessible point to your accommodation.
However, a suitable passenger count does not guarantee enough luggage space. Four adults with four 24- or 28-inch suitcases may exceed the capacity of a standard sedan. Choose a six-seat car or business vehicle, or use two cars if necessary.
Taxi or Ride-Hailing Car?
A ride-hailing app shows the estimated fare, vehicle type, plate number, and driver details before pickup. A taxi is useful for travelers who cannot use a mobile app or prefer to queue in the official taxi area.
Use the formal taxi boarding area at the station and pay according to the meter or official local pricing. Avoid unmarked vehicles or solicitors who do not clearly state the fare and destination.
After boarding, repeat the exact drop-off point. Instead of saying only “Dali Ancient City,” say something like: “I am going to a guesthouse near Erhai Gate. The property asked me to get off at this intersection.”
Detailed Comparison
Cost
For one traveler, the public bus is cheapest, followed by the direct shuttle, with a ride-hailing car usually the most expensive.
For two travelers, the accommodation location matters. If you need another car after getting off the shuttle, a direct ride-hailing car from Dali Railway Station may be more practical.
For three or four travelers, the cost per person for a car is usually reasonable. This is especially true for accommodation near Cangshan Gate, the North Gate, or deep inside the Ancient City, where going directly to the nearest entrance is often more sensible than taking the South Gate shuttle and transferring again.
Include all of the following in your cost:
- The first ticket or car fare;
- A short transfer after getting off;
- Any surcharge for a larger vehicle;
- A second taxi caused by getting off at the wrong stop or gate.
Time
A ride-hailing car is usually fastest, but do not look only at the driving time shown by navigation. The full time includes walking to the pickup zone, waiting for the driver, and loading and unloading luggage.
The shuttle takes about 40 minutes on the road without stops, but you must also allow time to find the service point, buy a ticket, and wait for departure.
The bus usually takes longest because of intermediate stops and traffic through Xiaguan. If a bus is already arriving, the total time may still be acceptable. If the next bus is far away, the time difference becomes larger.
Door-to-Door Time
The most useful comparison is not simply how long you sit in the vehicle, but the total time from leaving Dali Railway Station to entering your guesthouse.
Calculate it as follows:
- Bus: Finding the stop + waiting + time on the bus + walking after getting off.
- Direct shuttle: Finding the service point + ticket and waiting time + about 40 minutes of driving + walking after arrival.
- Ride-hailing car: Walking to the pickup zone + waiting for the driver + 25–40 minutes of driving + walking after arrival.
The following is only an example of the calculation, not a fixed timetable:
| Transport | Finding/Waiting | Time in Vehicle | Walk After Arrival | Example Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bus | 20 minutes | 60 minutes | 15 minutes | About 95 minutes |
| Direct shuttle | 20 minutes | 40 minutes | 15 minutes | About 75 minutes |
| Ride-hailing car | 18 minutes | 35 minutes | 5 minutes | About 58 minutes |
Actual time depends on passenger volume when trains arrive, waiting time, congestion, and accommodation location. The table is intended to show why driving time alone is not enough.
Luggage
A public bus is usually manageable with a backpack or cabin-size suitcase. A direct shuttle is easier with one large suitcase when staying near the South Gate. A ride-hailing car is more suitable for several people with several bags, but the vehicle must be large enough.
Many streets inside Dali Ancient City are stone-paved. Small suitcase wheels and heavy bags make long walks tiring. If the accommodation is more than one kilometer from the drop-off point, consider the road surface, crowds, weather, and altitude rather than assuming the walk will be easy.
Location
Staying near the South Gate: Compare the direct shuttle, Bus 4, and a ride-hailing car.
Staying near Erhai Gate or eastern Renmin Road: Compare Bus 8 and a ride-hailing car.
Staying near Cangshan Gate or March Street: Compare Bus 4 and a ride-hailing car. Avoid pulling luggage across the Ancient City from the East Gate.
Staying near the North Gate: Compare Bus 4 and a ride-hailing car, and confirm the real walking distance from North Gate Intersection or another drop-off point.
Staying near Chongsheng Temple and the Three Pagodas: Bus 4 travels in that direction, but check the route and last departure on the day.
Luggage Services
If you have a large amount of luggage, you can also ask about Dali Railway Station’s “Light Travel” service in addition to buses, shuttles, and cars.
Dali Railway Station is a pilot station for this service. Eligible travelers can arrange station-to-door or door-to-station luggage transport within 35 kilometers of the station. Whether a particular guesthouse is covered, whether capacity remains on the day, and how charges are calculated must be confirmed when arranging the service.
Who May Benefit
- One traveler carrying two or three large suitcases;
- Traveling with elderly people, children, or a stroller;
- Carrying a folding wheelchair or heavy photography equipment;
- Arriving before check-in is available;
- Staying in an Ancient City lane that vehicles cannot easily enter;
- Wanting to eat or sightsee first without pulling luggage around.
What to Confirm Before Booking
Ask the following questions:
- Is the guesthouse address within the service area?
- Can the service be arranged on the day?
- What is the estimated delivery time?
- How is the price calculated?
- How is the luggage handed over and confirmed?
- Which items cannot be transported?
- Must the traveler be present to sign for delivery?
Keep identification documents, cash, electronics, valuables, personal medication, and anything needed that evening with you. Do not place all essential items in transported luggage. Photograph the outside of each bag before handover and keep all receipts and contact details.
If you do not use the transport service, ask whether luggage lockers or staffed storage are available at Dali Railway Station. Locker sizes, opening status, and charges depend on the facilities available that day.
Travelers Requiring Extra Assistance
When traveling with elderly people, children, wheelchair users, or pregnant travelers, prioritize fewer transfers, less walking, and a vehicle that can approach the accommodation. Do not base the decision on fare alone.
Elderly Travelers
- Avoid plans that may require standing for a long time on a crowded bus;
- Do not walk across much of the Ancient City after using the wrong gate;
- Ask in advance whether the property can meet guests at the drop-off point;
- For nighttime arrivals, prefer a ride-hailing car or official taxi;
- Before booking a guesthouse in a deep lane, check for steps and steep sections.
Families with Children
- A stroller uses considerable trunk space and should be counted together with the suitcases when selecting a vehicle;
- Folding and carrying a stroller can be difficult on a crowded bus;
- In rain, avoid a long walk from a gate to the guesthouse;
- Before booking, confirm whether the entrance has a continuous flight of steps;
- For a nighttime arrival, ask the property to send a clear drop-off location in advance.
Wheelchair Users
- Before ordering a car, confirm that the trunk can hold the folded wheelchair;
- Ask whether the guesthouse entrance has steps, stone slopes, or narrow lanes;
- Do not judge accessibility using straight-line map distance alone;
- Choose a vehicle that can get as close as possible to the accommodation;
- If assistance is required, check the railway’s priority-passenger reservation service in advance.
Dali Railway Station has waiting and convenience facilities for passengers requiring extra assistance. Reservation conditions, application methods, and the help available should be confirmed through official railway channels or with station staff.
Arrival Time
Daytime Arrivals
From morning through the afternoon, public buses, the direct shuttle, and ride-hailing cars are usually all possible options.
After leaving the station, make three quick checks:
- Check the real-time bus arrival time.
- Ask how long the wait is for the next direct shuttle.
- Open a ride-hailing app to view the live fare and estimated pickup time.
If you are traveling alone with light luggage and a bus is arriving soon, take the bus. If you are staying near the South Gate and the shuttle wait is short, take the shuttle. If two or more people are traveling together and the ride-hailing fare is normal, a car may be the easiest option.
Early-Morning Arrivals
Do not assume buses and direct shuttles have started operating early in the morning. Check real-time bus information first and ask whether the shuttle service point is open.
If you arrive before public transport begins, consider:
- Resting briefly inside the station and waiting for the first bus;
- Using an official ride-hailing car or taxi;
- Booking a guesthouse pickup in advance;
- Asking whether the property can store luggage before check-in;
- Using luggage storage or the “Light Travel” service.
Temporary extended operating hours announced for festivals do not apply to ordinary days. Use the timetable for your actual travel date when planning an early-morning journey.
Nighttime Arrivals
Do not assume a public bus or direct shuttle is still running at night. The scheduled train arrival time is not the time you leave the station: walking through the station, collecting luggage, and finding the transport area all take additional time.
If you are close to the last-bus time, check the live route rather than relying entirely on old first-and-last-bus information. If the service cannot be confirmed, choose an official ride-hailing car or taxi.
Before arriving at night, ask the accommodation:
- Whether someone will be available to check you in;
- Which gate should be used at night;
- Whether a vehicle can enter the nearby road;
- Whether someone can meet you and help with luggage at an intersection.
Keep enough battery on your phone and save the property’s telephone number and location screenshot. The Ancient City has many lanes; do not pull luggage around alone at night without a clear destination.
Train Delays
If the train is delayed, the public bus or shuttle you originally planned to use may have stopped running. Do not continue using the original scheduled arrival time when arranging transport.
After a delay, check again:
- The new estimated arrival time;
- Real-time operating information for Bus 4 and Bus 8;
- Whether the direct shuttle still has departures;
- The current ride-hailing fare;
- Your revised expected arrival time at the accommodation;
- The nighttime drop-off point recommended by the accommodation.
Whether the direct shuttle waits for delayed trains must be confirmed on site. Do not accept an unclear station solicitation simply because you are worried about missing transport.
Peak-Season Arrivals
Dali Railway Station is particularly busy during Lunar New Year, the May Day holiday, summer vacation, and National Day. Roads around the Ancient City are also more likely to be congested. Dali Railway Station handled about 23.11 million arriving and departing passengers in 2025, so allow additional time to leave the station, wait, and find the pickup point during major travel peaks.
During peak season, you may encounter:
- Longer ride-hailing pickup times;
- Higher fares for standard vehicles;
- Queues at the direct-shuttle service point;
- Limited space for luggage on buses;
- Temporary traffic management outside the Ancient City;
- Drivers being required to drop passengers at an outer parking point.
Groups with a lot of luggage can check vehicle types and prices shortly before the train arrives, but should not place the order too early. If the driver reaches the station while you are still inside, waiting charges or cancellation may result.
Bad Weather
Rain, strong wind, or heavy rainfall affects waiting, car pickup, and the walk after getting off.
In rain, pay particular attention to:
- The walking distance from the bus stop or shuttle terminus to the guesthouse;
- Slippery stone paving, which slows travelers pulling luggage;
- Higher ride-hailing demand, longer pickup times, and possible price increases;
- Drivers being able to stop only at suitable outer-road locations;
- The nearest covered drop-off point recommended by the accommodation.
During heavy rain, flooding, or temporary traffic controls, do not insist on entering by the original route. Contact the property to confirm an alternative entrance and change the drop-off point according to current traffic instructions.
Common Mistakes
Following an Outdated Guide
Bus routes can change because of construction, station adjustments, and festivals. Guides that say “take Bus 8 to the Ancient City Bus Depot” no longer match the route after May 24, 2026. Travelers should now pay particular attention to Dali Ancient City East Gate and Ganjia Village.
First and last departure times, fares, and stops may also change. The information in this article is for advance planning; check live route information on the day.
Assuming the South Gate Is Central
The South Gate is convenient for Wenxian Road, Lvyu Road, and southern Fuxing Road, but it may be inconvenient for Erhai Gate, eastern Renmin Road, or Hongwu Road.
Inside the Ancient City, straight-line distance is misleading. Even a one-kilometer route can take much longer with luggage because of stone paving, steps, and crowded streets.
Accepting a Cheap Ride with Sales Conditions
If someone outside the station offers a “cheap ride to the Ancient City,” first ask whether it involves sharing, waiting, shopping, or buying another tourism product.
A transport-only service should clearly state:
- The ticket price or fare;
- The exact terminus;
- The departure time;
- Whether the ride is shared;
- Whether any additional purchase is required.
Do not accept a vehicle with an unclear destination, departure time, or additional conditions simply because the price is low.
Being Dropped at the Wrong Gate
If the driver asks which gate you need, do not casually answer “South Gate.” Open the guesthouse location on the map, show it to the driver, and state the drop-off point recommended by the front desk.
Some accommodation names contain phrases such as “South Gate Branch,” “Erhai Gate Branch,” or “Ancient City Branch.” Treat the name only as a clue. Use the map pin and the property’s directions as the final reference.
Looking Only at Driving Time
A navigation estimate of 25, 40, or 60 minutes usually covers only one part of the journey. Travelers must still find the boarding area, wait, handle luggage, and walk from the drop-off point to the accommodation.
Compare the full door-to-door time, not only the time the vehicle is moving.
Assuming the Car Can Reach the Door
A guesthouse being inside the Ancient City does not mean a taxi can reach its entrance. Some lanes are narrow, and vehicles may stop only at a gate, main road, or outer parking point.
Before ordering a car, ask the property, “How far can the vehicle go?” rather than asking only which gate is closest.
Return to Dali Railway Station
When returning from Dali Ancient City to Dali Railway Station, do not simply reverse the outbound travel time. To catch a train, allow for walking from the guesthouse to the pickup point, waiting for the vehicle, security checks, and finding the boarding gate.
Your return journey includes:
- Walking from the guesthouse to a gate or pickup point;
- Waiting for a bus, ride-hailing car, or taxi;
- Travel time from the Ancient City to Dali Railway Station;
- Station security screening;
- Entering the waiting area and locating the train gate.
If you stay inside the Ancient City, a ride-hailing car may not be able to enter the guesthouse lane. Ask the property for the best return pickup point in advance and send that location to the driver.
Allow more time during holidays, rush hour, or bad weather. Do not work backward using only a “35-minute drive.”
If returning by bus, confirm the direction and last departure on the day. After the Bus 8 route adjustment, do not follow old instructions to wait at the discontinued Ancient City Bus Depot.
Check on Arrival
If you still cannot decide after arriving at Dali Railway Station, use this order:
- Open the map and check the real-time positions of Bus 4 and Bus 8.
- Confirm which gate and bus stop are closest to your accommodation.
- Ask how long the wait is for the next direct shuttle.
- Check the current ride-hailing fare and estimated pickup time.
- Calculate how far you must walk after each option.
- If you have a lot of luggage, confirm that it fits in the vehicle.
- If you still cannot decide, contact the accommodation directly.
- If routes are temporarily changed, follow current station and transport-department instructions.
Do not ask staff only, “How do I get to Dali Ancient City?” A more useful question is:
“I am going to a guesthouse near Erhai Gate in Dali Ancient City and have one large suitcase. Should I take Bus 4, Bus 8, the direct shuttle, or a taxi, and which stop should I use?”
The more precise the destination, the more useful the answer will be.
Which Option Should You Choose?
One traveler with a backpack arriving during the day: Choose Bus 4 or Bus 8 according to the accommodation location.
One traveler with a large suitcase staying near the South Gate: Choose the RMB 5 direct tourist shuttle first.
Two travelers: Check the live ride-hailing price and compare it with the door-to-door time of the shuttle and bus.
Three or four travelers: Consider a ride-hailing car first, but confirm that the trunk can hold all luggage.
Staying near Erhai Gate, Hongwu Road, or eastern Renmin Road: Bus 8 or a ride-hailing car is usually more direct.
Staying near the South Gate, Cangshan Gate, March Street, or the North Gate: Bus 4 or a ride-hailing car is usually more convenient.
Traveling with elderly people, children, a wheelchair, or a stroller: Take a car to the nearest road-accessible point to the accommodation.
Arriving early in the morning: Confirm that buses and the direct shuttle have started operating. If not, use an official taxi or ride-hailing car, or wait for the first bus.
Arriving at night: Check whether real-time bus and shuttle services are still running. If this cannot be confirmed, use an official ride-hailing car or taxi.
Delayed train: Check every transport option again instead of continuing to rely on the original timetable.
Staying deep inside an Ancient City lane: Ask the property to send the exact gate, parking point, and walking route in advance.
Before You Arrive
Before reaching Dali Railway Station, complete the following preparations:
- Save the full name, address, and telephone number of your accommodation.
- Confirm whether it is closest to the South Gate, Erhai Gate, Cangshan Gate, or North Gate.
- Ask whether a vehicle can reach the property entrance.
- Confirm how many minutes you must walk after getting off.
- Check the real-time operating status of Bus 4, Bus 8, and the direct shuttle.
- Check current ride-hailing prices and available vehicle types.
- If carrying large luggage, confirm vehicle capacity in advance.
- Decide whether you need the “Light Travel” service or luggage storage.
- If arriving at night, confirm that someone will be available to receive you.
- If the train is delayed, notify the accommodation promptly.
- Save a screenshot of the accommodation location in case the network is unstable.
- Keep enough battery on your phone to contact the driver and accommodation.
Getting from Dali Railway Station to Dali Ancient City is straightforward once you choose the correct gate. Solo travelers with light luggage can use a public bus; travelers staying near the South Gate can use the direct tourist shuttle; groups, travelers with more luggage, and nighttime arrivals will usually find a direct car easier.
Routes, departures, and Ancient City traffic management can change temporarily. On the day of travel, check Dali Railway Station signs, real-time bus information, the official shuttle service point, and the drop-off location provided by your accommodation before making the final decision.
