ToggleYuhu Village (Stone Village)
Yuhu Village is located 18 km from Lijiang Old Town at an altitude of 2880 m. It is the Naxi village closest to the main peak at the southern foot of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. American scholar Joseph Rock lived here for 27 years. Entering the village, the houses lack finely polished wood carvings or white plastered walls; instead, villagers used local materials, stacking glacial stones fallen from the snow mountain. The stones have a rough, grayish-brown surface, and the gaps are filled with mud. The village retains uneven flagstone paths where original residents still carry out daily agricultural life, and one can often see haystacks and villagers leading horses along the road.
Landscape Features: Buildings are entirely constructed from unpolished glacial stones from the snow mountain, appearing grayish-brown and preserving traditional mud-filling techniques and flagstone paths.
Main Attractions: Joseph Rock’s Former Residence displays a single wooden bed, kerosene lamps, and hundreds of reproduced old photographs of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain from 1922 to 1949.
Transportation: A one-way taxi ride from Lijiang Old Town takes about 40 minutes (about 50 yuan), or take bus No. 17 to the village entrance.
Tickets & Consumption: The village itself is open for free all day, while Joseph Rock’s Former Residence requires a separate ticket of 30 yuan.
Commercial Facilities: Along the main road, there are about 20 guesthouses run by locals or outsiders, and fewer than 10 cafes.
Touring Time: Recommended to visit between 14:00 and 17:00, when the light is sufficient for photographing the stone houses together with the snow mountain.
Clothing Advice: The altitude is nearly 400 m higher than Lijiang Old Town, and the temperature is 3-5℃ lower. A windproof jacket is needed for the afternoon wind, and flat or hiking shoes are required for the uneven roads.
Baisha Ancient Town
Baisha Ancient Town is located 10 km north of Dayan Old Town at an altitude of 2500 m. It is the birthplace of the Naxi Mu clan. The town preserves ancient architectural complexes from the Ming and Qing dynasties and the 55.8 square meter Ming Dynasty “Baisha Murals.” The main street is less than 1 km long, with a daily tourist volume only one-tenth of Dayan Old Town, and over 70% of the permanent residents are local Naxi people. The street directly faces Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to the north, making it ideal for tourists who enjoy intangible cultural heritage, handicrafts, and quiet coffee breaks.
Walking on the main street of Baisha, there is no deafening bar music. The wooden houses on both sides retain traditional Naxi architectural layouts, and many shops hang blue and white tie-dyed fabrics at their doors. There are shops selling handmade copperware and stalls where Naxi elders sell vegetables and snacks. Compared to other ancient towns, the density of cafes here is higher, mostly converted from residential courtyards with terraces on the second floor for viewing the snow mountain.
Landscape Features: The main street is about 1 km long. Most buildings are traditional Naxi wood-and-stone structures of the “Three Buildings and a Screen Wall” style, with a direct line of sight to Jade Dragon Snow Mountain at the end of the street.
Main Attractions: The “Baisha Murals” in Dabaoji Palace were painted between 1385 and 1619, merging elements of Tibetan Buddhism, Taoism, and Naxi Dongba culture.
Transportation: About 10 km from Lijiang Dayan Old Town. A one-way taxi takes about 20 minutes (around 25 yuan), or take bus No. 6 to Baisha Road Crossing station and walk.
Tickets & Consumption: The town streets are open for free all day, while the Baisha Murals attraction requires a separate ticket of 20 yuan.
Commercial Facilities: There are about 30 traditional tie-dye and copper-beating workshops along the street, along with dozens of independent cafes with viewing terraces and Naxi roast meat restaurants.
Touring Time: It is recommended to arrange 2 to 3 hours for a walking tour. Light is softest and crowds are thinnest before 10:00 or after 17:00.
Clothing Advice: The temperature difference between morning and evening is over 10℃; use “onion-style” layering (T-shirt plus a thick coat). UV rays are strong, so wear sunglasses and a hat on sunny days.
Wenhai
Wenhai is about 25 km from Lijiang Dayan Old Town at an altitude of 3180 m. It is a seasonal alpine lake covering about 1.5 square kilometers. Annual tourist volume is less than 1% of Lijiang’s conventional attractions. There are no fences or artificial developments. From May to June, the surrounding area is covered with alpine rhododendrons; during the wet season from July to September, water accumulates into a lake; and during the dry season from October to the following April, it turns into a vast alpine meadow. The village currently has only a few dozen households of Naxi original residents, making it suitable for nature photographers, self-drive travelers, and hikers.
The winding road to Wenhai includes dozens of continuous curves. The road is narrow, and the 20-plus km journey usually takes about 1 hour by car. Upon reaching the lakeside, the environment is entirely primitive and natural. There are no tourist service centers, boardwalks, or signs. Hundreds of cattle, sheep, and horses raised by villagers roam freely on the meadow, drinking and foraging by the lake. The terrain is open, directly facing the Shanzidou main peak of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain. Internal village roads are mostly unpaved, retaining dirt and gravel surfaces.
Landscape Features: Alternating seasonal alpine lake and meadow, with hundreds of free-roaming livestock and no man-made boardwalks or railings.
Transportation: About 25 km from Dayan Old Town. No direct public transport; self-driving or chartered cars are required. The journey involves continuous mountain roads and takes about 1 hour (chartered car round trip costs about 150-200 yuan).
Tickets & Consumption: An undeveloped natural village open for free all day with no admission fee.
Commercial Facilities: No large-scale commercial facilities. Only 3 to 5 simple farmhouses run by villagers provide basic catering, alongside a few small guesthouses.
Touring Time: Recommended stay of 2 to 3 hours. See flowers in May-June, the lake in July-August, and the golden dry meadow in autumn and winter. It is advised to return before 16:00 to avoid driving on mountain roads at night.
Clothing Advice: With an altitude over 3100 m, winds are strong and temperatures are 5-8℃ lower than in Lijiang city. Bring a windproof and warm jacket or light down coat. The meadow may be muddy, so wear waterproof shoes.
Qingxi Reservoir
Qingxi Reservoir is located at the foot of Xiangshan Mountain in the northern suburbs of Lijiang at an altitude of about 2400 m. It is the backup water source for Lijiang city, with water quality consistently maintained above Grade II. It is about 3.5 km from Dayan Old Town, and the dam is nearly 800 m long, making it the best free spot to photograph the 5596 m main peak of Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and its reflection. As it is not on conventional tour routes, there are very few tourists, and over 90% of visitors are local residents. It is suitable for cycling enthusiasts, wedding photographers, and travelers seeking a quiet sunset view.
Qingxi Reservoir is not a closed tourist attraction but an open municipal park. The reservoir is surrounded by dense willow forests with flat pedestrian paths. Since the water is clear and the surface is calm, the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain to the north is perfectly reflected on the water on clear, windless days, creating a symmetrical visual effect. There is no commercial shouting here, only locals walking, exercising, or taking wedding photos.
Landscape Features: The reservoir has a wide and calm water surface that clearly reflects the Shanzidou main peak and its mountain textures.
Main Attractions: The 800 m dam and the surrounding weeping willow forest are excellent spots to capture “Golden Mountain” at sunrise/sunset and reflections.
Transportation: About 3.5 km from Dayan Old Town. A taxi takes about 10-15 minutes (around 12 yuan). You can also use shared bikes or take bus No. 3 or 4 directly.
Tickets & Consumption: A municipal public area with no entrance fee, open 24 hours a day.
Commercial Facilities: As a protected water source area, no commercial stalls or catering are allowed inside. The nearest convenience store is about 300 m from the main gate.
Touring Time: Recommended to arrive 1 hour before sunset when the light is soft and the wind subsides, the golden hour for photographing reflections and the golden snow mountain.
Notes: Winds by the water can be strong, and the perceived temperature is low, so bring a long-sleeved jacket. Swimming, fishing, or open-fire picnics on the grass are strictly prohibited.
Zhiyun Temple
Zhiyun Temple is located 18 km from Dayan Old Town on the mountainside west of Lashihai Lake. Built in the fifth year of Emperor Yongzheng (1727), it is one of the five major Tibetan Buddhist temples in Lijiang. The entire temple covers about 12,000 square meters, with about 20 resident monks. Daily tourist volume is usually fewer than 50 people, less than 0.5% of Lijiang’s total. The courtyard houses several ancient ginkgo and Yunnan cherry trees over 200 years old, suitable for ancient architecture enthusiasts, photographers, and those seeking a quiet meditation space.
Reaching Zhiyun Temple requires passing a lakeside road and climbing several hundred meters of stairs. The main temple architecture adopts a mixed Han-Tibetan style, with dark red walls and traditional gilded copper roofs. There are no commercial stalls selling expensive incense, and wooden benches are available outside the main hall. In mid-to-late November, the ancient ginkgo leaves turn yellow, covering the stone courtyard. From late March to April, cherry blossoms contrast with the red walls and golden roofs. The environment is extremely quiet, with only the sound of wind chimes and monks chanting.
Landscape Features: Mixed Han-Tibetan architectural style featuring red walls and golden roofs, with ancient ginkgo and cherry trees over 200 years old.
Main Attractions: The Mahavira Hall built in 1727 and traditional courtyards with exquisite Naxi wood carvings where monks have lived for generations.
Transportation: About 18 km from Dayan Old Town. No direct buses; taxi or chartered car is recommended. A one-way trip takes about 40 minutes (taxi costs about 40-50 yuan).
Tickets & Consumption: The temple is open for free all day with no admission fee or forced sales of incense.
Commercial Facilities: No commercial catering or convenience stores inside or within several hundred meters of the temple. Only a few farmhouses run by villagers are located by the road at the foot of the hill.
Touring Time: Recommended to set aside 1 to 1.5 hours. Mid-November for ginkgo or late March for cherry blossoms offer the best visual effects of the year.
Notes: As a religious site, loud noise and photography inside the halls are prohibited. Visitors should follow the etiquette of clockwise circumambulation. Since it is built on a mountainside, a climb of several hundred stone steps is required.
